nigel99 568 #29 June 23, 2004 the reason I dislike Microsoft is their policy of swamping products with features that I do not want and then have to pay for. For example MS Office is more powerfull than ANY of us will ever have use for - the featureset within it justifies the high price - MS Works is more in line with what we all use BUT MS does not make the two products compatible. The same goes for Windows they bloat the OS with Video editing software/MSN messenger/email & internet apps etc - the featureset justifies the price IF you use them - some of us would prefer the choice of having a barebones windows OS cheaply and buying 3rd party better tools to fulfill our needs. Thankfully in Europe it looks like MS will be forced to do just that. Linux - I've tried it but unless you use a PC just for surfing the net you get severely hit on software for business use. The Linux user interface on software is generally fragmented and not "designed" it has evolved and does not benefit from the money the MS have put into UI studies. Another problem for Linux is the lack of a business face to it - generally we like to have someone we can phone and kick when it goes wrong. It makes a great & cheap server for a small business though (use it for that ourselves)Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. Quote you guys explaining OS's to me would be about the same as me trying to explain the diferences between all the different glues that i work with everyday!*** Why haven't you shared your glue with the rest of us? jumpy 0 #31 June 23, 2004 Quote Quote IF (you are a "power-user") THEN you have a choice of Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris x86 (but if you were a power-user, you would already know that) ELSE get a Mac There's a logical error on that code, the last line should be like this: ELSE IF IDIOT=1 THEN Get a MAC And that's because?.... Do you actually have a reason other then you being a windows person? Every Mac I have ever used has performed much beter then any windows machine. PhillyKev 0 #32 June 23, 2004 blah blah blah...linux is no more secure than MS. It's just not as big of a target.....yet
pilotdave 0 #33 June 23, 2004 Don't like microsoft cause their products have features you don't want to pay for? I have a solution... download em and don't pay! Then you get to use all the features you want and pay for none! Dave
riddler 0 #34 June 23, 2004 I have Linux, I love Linux, but if you don't love tweaking computers, stay the F away from Linux! Not only is it harder for the average user, but you will get NO support from anybody to fix problems - it's all you, baby! And even if you love computers before Linux, you will hate them after. It's still not made for the average user. I also have a few Windoze boxes that are required because that's what all my customers use. As an OS, it's gotten better. Much, much better. And just to show how everything eventually comes full-circle, for a lot of people, I recommend Macs! I used to hate Macs - they weren't made for people that need to get inside of the OS and tweak thing, like me. But with the BSD kernel, they've finally started to get a respectable OS, and they do make nice hardware. If you've got the money, get a Mac. Probably will be my next machine. Whenever I get p*ssed at M$, I like to watch video of Bill Gates after his 100th jump. Makes me feel better.Trapped on the surface of a sphere.
