Packing your rig

Recommended Posts

I' m just curious to find out how many people pack their own rig and how many people use a packer and why... I used to suck at packing so I used a packer alot, but that's somewhat frowned upon at our DZ so now I pack myself preety much all the time, except when I'm at a boogie and jumping 5+ times a day...

What about you guys?

Until jump # 91, I'd packed for myself once - to get signed off on my requirement. (Can you tell I hated/hate packing?) After my mal on jump # 91, I decided it was time to start packing for myself. Now, I will treat myself to a packer (that sounds kinda dirty :D) once in awhile - usually at boogies so that I can expend all my energy on jumping.

Basic economics:

1) I hate to pack.

2) I have the money to pay packers.

3) Packers need the money.

Seems like a perfect deal to me. I can easily see why I'd get frustrated with packers and pack for myself, but first, my frustration has to get much greater than my hatred of packing. ;)

I finally learned how to pack.... but with a new 189 canopy... it takes me literally 45 minutes to pack.
so if I want to jump more than once a day I use a packer.

I will pack more when it is not so slippery.

The really shitty thing is that when they get smaller, they aren't any easier cause your damn rig gets smaller too.:D And for the record, i agree with Clownburner, i have the money to pay them and they need the money, win-win.;)

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

I pack my 210 rental gear most of the time and can still jump five or more times in a day. Of course I get there for the first load in the morning and leave after beer. I can usually get it packed in under 30 minutes too.

Now it is not a new slick canopy for sure so that helps but I still feel like I am stuffing 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag.

Thats so not true, getting it in the bag maybe but the rest is so much nicer with a 120 than a 150. Go smaller and it keeps getting better.

Yeah. What he said. B| That and it takes me FOREVER to get my brand spankin' new canopy in the *$&% *#&$ bag and it makes little beads of perspiration on my forehead, which have the potential to interfere with my makeup. -That, and ladies just should not sweat in public.:ph34r::ph34r:

Edited to add: And I cut away my first pack job back on jump 25...doesn't do much for a girl's confidence. :(:P:ph34r:

Yeah, well. . .I would LOVE to see you survive a week on MY budget. . .bet you would start packing for yourself then. . .

Here's my basic economics version. . .

1) The otter flies 25+ times a day. . .if we are cranking they will even put two otters up. . .there is 10 minutes between loads on a cranking day. The most jumps I have ever made in one day is 6 so its not likely that I will have time issues packing for myself. . .even if it takes me an hour between jumps to pack. . .

2) It costs me $6 per pack job (big canopy)

3) If I jump 7 times in one day, that's $42 (or two more jumps I can make on another day)

Moral of the story is, just jump at a larger dropzone with lots of turbine aircraft so I can save money by packing for myself between loads

save money = more money for jumps. . .makes Darcy a happy camper. . .B|

Packing for myself. Riddler taught me how and I made my first jump on my own stuff, and own pack job at jump #12.

I checked and rechecked, grabbed, went through EP's about 50 times before that jump. It opened fine but has some line twists.....which I caused.

Tip:When you pitch dont look over your shoulder and watch the lines come out, bag open, and chute come out. Bad things tend to happen.:P

I rarely use packers. I hate they way the tend to be rough on gear, like when tossing a rig down, or when closing a rig with brute force on the pull up cord, instead of getting the bag spread out/squished down into the container first.

I have yet to see one bother to check for twists in steering lines.

I usually pack for myself, but sometimes attempt (if the packer hasn't gotten to it by the time I land and have one rig packed they loose) to delegate when I take a second rig up and/or am feeling tired.

The biggest thing is that packers aren't fast enough. Although most can easily beat my 8 minutes, most are packing for multiple people and there's enough back log to cause me to make fewer jumps.
