The best free thing to do in the South

Waterfall hunting! B|

The kids and I are back from our summer vacation to South Carolina and I thought I'd share a few pictures of how beautiful the scenery is there. We were in the corner of the state where GA, SC and NC all meet up. If you live in the area, you really should spend a few days hunting out the waterfalls. There are dozens of them and they are SO beautiful.

Part of the fun is the hunt. Once you get directions (we got ours off the internet), you really just pull off on the side of the road and start hiking through the woods. At this point, you can hear the Fall but you can't see it. The one called Brasstown Falls in the pictures was a precarious hike. At some points we were on dirt ledges on the sides of hills that were only as wide as our bodies and the only thing we had to hang onto to help us down were tree roots! Once you get to the Fall, it's well worth the hike though. They really give you a good reason to stop and reflect about this beautiful land that we live in.

We were so busy doing activities, we only went to 2 Falls on this trip. The tall one in the pictures is 186' high. We did have to pay $1.00 to see that one because it is a tourist stop. The other one had a nice swimming hole we got to swim in. We've been to others in the Highlands, NC area that we got to slide down the waterfall into the pool of water! B|

Anyway, that was our trip. We also visited Clemson (never too soon to put the thoughts of college in the kid's heads!), shopped in a little German-replica town in Helen, GA, played lots of sports at the resort, went horseback riding and rafted 12 miles down the Chatooga River, the one where Deliverance was filmed. I had 5 teenagers with me during part of the trip so it wasn't really that relaxing, but we sure did have fun!

Sorry. I haven't even looked at what the thread is about. You would be one of the best things to do in the south.

I had heard white on rice before, but the rye thing was uniquely Floridian.

When on earth did I say that? I think I need to drink less because I don't remember saying that at all! Besides that, it's totally stupid!

Great photos. That area is beautiful. I spent a week up there with one of my sons last year. Two days of that was white-water rafting on the Chatooga river. This is the location where the movie "Deliverance" was filmed. It's a National Wild & Scenic River, which means that no development is allowed within something like 5 miles of either river bank, in order to preserve it in its natural state. It's a great place to visit. There are several state parks in northern Georgia which contain some dramatic waterfalls.

Photo #1: Running the rapids.
Photo #2: One of the many waterfalls along the river.

Hot tip: Take a waterproof disposable camera!

How dare you get that close and not let me know. My wife and I would have loved to have ya'll over for dinner. The waterfalls are great around here but let me warn you, if you're wanting your kids to get a college education, you might not want to have them go to Clemson ;):P
edit to add PS

PS-It would have also given me the chance to give tou this USELESS LSU t-shirt that is hanging in the back of our closet:P

Sorry, I didn't realize I was going to be close to anyone. :$ I would have loved to take that LSU shirt from you! My brother went to Clemson...I'll tell him your thoughts on his education. ;)

JohnRich, we did raft the Chatooga and had a great time. The water was really high and fast due to a deluge up in the Highlands area. We ended up going 12 miles and did a portion on the river that the guides said they never get to go on because the water is usually too low. It was great!

Hey now! Don't be knocking on my school, I know where you live and it is very close to me. Also you may not want to bring your daughter around there because... well... I don't need to be getting into any more trouble.

I have to admit, my wife graduated from Clemson and is working on her Master's there now. I didn't graduate college so i shouldn't crack on CU

I suppose those degrees in hay baling, cow milking, and goat roping must come in handy for some people:P:P

john, those pics are from section 4, eh? i've rafted the chattooga on many occasions. having the boats tow you to the ramp in the tugaloo helps after a long day of paddling. :)

andrea, there's a town called seneca that you probably drove thru to get the the falls and to the chattooga. that's where i lived before moving to FL. the scenery up there is phenomenal and that is one of the things i miss most.

good for you for getting to play around in it. it truly is beautiful....

I thought Y'All were into "dangerous" sports.

Surely the best free thing to do in the Southern States is to find the answers to the following:

1. Calculate the smallest limb diameter on a persimmon tree that will support a 10-pound possum.

2. Which of these cars will rust out the quickest when placed on blocks in your front yard? -'65 Ford Fairlane, -'69 Chevrolet Chevelle or -'64 Pontiac GTO.

3. If your uncle builds a still which operates at a capacity of 20 gallons of shine produced per hour, how many car radiators are required to condense the product?

4. A woodcutter has a chainsaw which operates at 2700 RPM. The density of the pine trees in the plot to be harvested is 470 per acre. The plot is 2.3 acres in size. The average tree diameter is14 inches. How many Budweisers will be drunk before the trees are cut down?

5. If every old refrigerator in the state vented a charge of R-12 simultaneously, what would be the percentage decrease in the ozone layer?

6. A front porch is constructed of 2x8 pine on 24-inch centers with a field rock foundation. The span is 8 feet and the porch length is 16 feet. the porch floor is 1-inch rough sawn pine. When the porch collapses, how many hound dogs will be killed?

7. A man builds a house on 3.7 acres of land in a hollow with an average slope of 15%. The man has five children. Can each of his grown children place a mobile home on the man's land and still have enough property for their electric appliances to sit out front?

8. A 2-ton truck is overloaded and proceeding 900 yards down a steep slope on a secondary road at 45 MPH. The brakes fail. Given average traffic conditions on secondary roads, what is the probability that it will strike a vehicle with a muffler?

9. A sulphur mine operates a NFPA Class 1, Division 2 Hazardous Area. The mine employs 120 miners per shift. A gas warning is issued at the beginning of the 3rd shift. How many cartons of unfiltered Camels will be smoked during the shift?

10. At a reduction in the gene pool variability rate of 7.5% per generation, how long will it take a town which has been bypassed by the Interstate to breed a country-western singer?

I have been to Toccoa Falls and I thought they were absolutely gorgeous. I went to summer camp for a couple of years at Camp Toccoa with my church and we always hiked down the road to see the falls. I have a few pics of me in front of them but I can't find them right now.
I'm so funny I crack my head open!

We came to know Seneca well! We went to the Super Wal-Mart there a couple of times and to the movie theaters. We were at a resort off HWY 11 on Black Jack Road south of Westminster. I'm sure you know it...what a small world! B|
