But you have given me a good idea. I need too find people to do other stuff with. Now where does a 28 year old who is new to the state go to find basketball buddies?

Hi Darius11

Have you tried hanging out in the basketball court at the schoolyard in the hood:)
Basketball, running very fast, martial art skills etc.

R.I.P.

Don't sweat the pull ups - I have been in the Army for nearly eleven years, I reckon I am very fit, but I can't do pull ups to save my life (maybe one one handed and ten with both!).

The gym is not the best place to lose weight - muscle weighs more than fat and pumping iron does not tend to burn fat anyway (I am currently working hard in the gym to gain weight - not lose it!)

Get outside, jog, cycle, even walk! A weekend hiking is a winner because you work hard without really noticing and also eat less. Double bonus. The main thing is to do something fun, like squash or other sports (swimming?) rather than just running which can get a bit boring!

CAREFUL!!! - THIS IS A COMPLETE FALSEHOOD

Pumping iron DOES help to burn fat. More specifically, muscle tissue has a higher cellular metabolic rate than fat tissue. Therefore, those with more muscle tissue burn more calories at rest than do those with more fat tissue.

Therefore, if you take two people who weigh the same, the one with more muscle mass will be thinner and will burn more calories at rest than the one with less muscle mass.

This is why I emphasize - weight loss is not always the best measure of the efficacy of a 'weight loss' program. You should be basing your progress on inches lost, changes in appearance, and improvements in the way you feel.

For the best results, you should COMBINE cardiovascular workouts with strength training.

I'll bet you $1,000 that if you max at ten pull-ups with both hands, that you most certainly can not do one pull-up with one hand. Very few people on the face of the earth can do an honest one-handed pull-up. Go try it. It's incredibly difficult to even move an inch. I know, I've tried. And, I can do pull-ups like a madman.

Then why do I see so many fat people at the gym who can push a lot of iron, but can't get rid of that paunch?

Of course it does - that is a facile comment. Getting out of bed burns some energy. What I mean is that it is a very inefficient way of getting fit. This is semantics

Ergo my point about muscle weighing more than fat. The question here is how to become the thinner guy, and after ten years of military fitness I am unshakeable in my conviction that fitness (not strength, fitness) comes from CV work, and that running, swimming and sports are far more effective than pumping iron.

Ok, I am only talking about the idle mans holding on to the wrist one handed pull up! Damn straight I can't do one with my other arm hanging by my side!! :$:P

I had learned that fitness = a combination of CV, strength training, and flexibility.

I think they complement one another. for example, if you do a lot of running, then strength training of the legs will help prevent you from getting some injuries common to runners. I run sometimes, and I know my knees feel a lot better when I'm also doing strength training regularly.

Now check this out, I can't do a one handed (my buddy can) But I can do a one hand one pinky pullup!

its funny, i dont put much weight on the pinky, but the balance helps a ton, i can't figure it out.

unsure if this is motivation....????

I have the opposite problem from everyone I know....I want to gain weight so bad.

I dropped 15 lbs. a yr. 1/2 ago....and have been unable to gain it back....in fact I just keep losing weight---have no muscle mass...skin hangs...very weak.
Everyone teases me calling me "bag of bones",
honestly I do not feel the strength to make a skydive and that sucks.[:/][:/]

I have chronic illness with my digestive system. There is an alternative which is to be hospitalized on TPN (total paretineal nutrition) or feeding through the veins for 16 weeks to fatten me up. In the meanwhile I dehydrate so easily and drink loads of fluids and ensure drinks, once you loose muscle mass it is real hard to get it back (of course if I was digesting the goodies my body needs it would be a different story)

So- I think anyone wanting to loose weight is :S:S....
If you are a healthy person and are not happy with your weight - motivation will come depending on your priorities. :P

SMiles;)
