MuffDiver 0 #1 June 16, 2004 Anybody ride one of these? I'm not too familiar with them but I have a great deal on one if I want it. The bike is a 2001 Ducati 996 Biposto - Brand new still in the box. They want $11500 CAD (approx. $8300 US). Is there much to look for when looking at a brand new bike? __________________________________________________ Don't take life too seriously. Darius11 12 #2 June 16, 2004 A 996 for 8300 bucks with no miles. Make sure there is no catch that sounds like a good deal. I don't ride Ducatis but if i could get one for 8300 bucks i would.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
MuffDiver 0 #3 June 16, 2004 I know I couldn't believe the price myself. What happened is that an RV dealership aquired a bunch of inventory from a bankrupt dealership at an auction and a brand new Ducati was one of the unit among the quads, dirtbikes and a few other streetbikes. __________________________________________________ Don't take life too seriously. dgskydive 0 #4 June 16, 2004 GET IT! If I had the cash I would buy it. Make sure it is not stolen or there is something weird about it. BUT BUY IT! My Dad has one and he loves it! That Bike is the bomb and I am very, very jealous! I am normally a Honda guy, mostly because I can't afford a Duc!Dom

TypicalFish 0 #7 June 16, 2004 I rode a '96 for quite awhile; finicky, but nothing else like it. Sounds like a great deal; I would go with it if it's all legit. shropshire 0 #10 June 16, 2004 I'm in the U.K so some of these questions may not apply but if it was me (and I REALLY WISH IT WAS!!) ..... (1) As it's in a box and being sold by a none-duke dealer (probably not even a motor cycle shop, if RV stands for wheeled houses!) - who's going to do the PDI (Pre-devilery Inspection)? (2) Check that it has all of the importer warranty/paperwork etc.. (3) Is it a propper US import or grey? (KM speedo etc..)? (4) I'd get a Duke mechanic to check it over - desmo engines are not like 'normally' valed engines I've had 4 Italian bikes now (2 dukes, a Motoguzzi and a Laverda) and I swear by them (and often at them but always come out smiling). Kris 0 #11 June 16, 2004 It's a scam! This was being discussed over on the Gixxer.com forums a couple of weeks back. That RV website was setup just a couple of months back. Run a WhoIs search on it. But, if this is a local deal and you can physically touch the bike, and all the papers are in order....jump on it like a hobo on a ham sammich. That's a helluva deal for an '01 Duck 996. There are a lot of scams going on right now with people 'overseas' who will gladly ship you an incredibly cheap bike. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
Kris 0 #12 June 16, 2004 Oh, and I forgot to add...if this is your first bike, that's a bad choice. Start with something a lot smaller.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
shropshire 0 #13 June 16, 2004 I agree, if it's your first bike ... buy it and leave it in your lounge for a year or two ... just look at at it's got to be better than watching T.V.. (.)Y(.) MuffDiver 0 #16 June 17, 2004 I've received more info on the bike and everything seems to be in order. There was no website or anything. I just ordered a new skydiving rig so I decided to pass on the deal, however, a friend of mine is buying it. I'm going in tommorrow to put a small deposit down to hold the bike untill he gets here (he is out of town right now). He had a 2002 CBR 954 that just got stolen about a month ago and just recieved the insurance cheque for it, it is enough to cover the cost of the 996. I'll keep you guys posted on it and let you know when we get it. I wish I could buy it, but I just can't justify two new toys in one month, the rig was bad enough. At the same time I didn't want to see the deal fall apart so I called my friend and he jumped on it. __________________________________________________ Don't take life too seriously. mgerra28 0 #17 June 17, 2004 ducatis' are very nice bikes sound awesome. Great track bike but if you plan on riding for over an hour at a time be prepared. They aren't the best bike for comfort. Its a great buy but i'd look into the GXSR. Also, insurance will eat you up. I'd buy it and sell it buy a honda CBR1000r they'll eat a ducati and their more comfortable..http://www.skydivethefarm.com don't sweat the small stuff, in fact don't sweat at all,, you get smelly!! Conundrum 1 #18 June 17, 2004 I'm curious, how much riding experiance do you have if you are asking for advice on what to look for when purchasing a new bike? It just seems that someone with enough riding experiance to be riding such a high performace machine would know what to look for. I hope you don't take offense, I'm just wondering; I'd hate to see someone with little to no experience on a 996cc motorcycle.
BoostedXT 0 #19 June 17, 2004 Conun is right. The Duc 996 is a great bike, but way to much to handle for someones first bike. What is your riding experience? I have ridden basically every sport bike from an R6 to a Mille R to a 998. The 998 was a great bike. The sound is awesome and there is nothing like riding a Duc. For pure and enjoyment I love the new 600RR....its a rocket, handles awesome, and is cheap on insurance.Keep the rubber side down. joeFor long as you live and high you fly and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry and all that you touch and all that you see is all your life will ever be. Ncrowe 0 #20 June 17, 2004 Buy it, sell it then take the money and buy a Gixxer 600 if its your first bike. If this isnt your first sport bike then get something bigger 750 or 1000. Buying a Ducati for your first bike would be like buying a 16 year a ferarri. "Don't Mess Around With the Guy in Shades- Oh No!!! "
atsaubrey 0 #21 June 17, 2004 I dont know what insurance is like up there but I had a 99 Ducati 996 with 8 grand in extras and insurance was only $600/year. Than i totaled it and insurance with that company went up to $8000!!! Didnt make sense, so i'm with a new company and unfortunately a RC-51. (once you ride a Duc nothing compares ever again)"GOT LEAD?"

Buying a Ducati for your first bike would be like buying a 16 year a ferarri. As someone who owns a GSX-R 600, I wouldn't exactly recommend it for a first bike. A better choice would be an EX-500 or an SVS-650. The Gixxer is an animal, even in the 600. It puts down just over 100HP to the rear wheel and when the tach sweeps past 7K you'd better be holding on. As a first bike, it would be a handful, as any "R" type bike (R6, ZX-6R, 600RR) would be. I also recommend that a new rider take an Motorcycle Safety Foundation course ASAP. cloud_monkey 0 #25 June 17, 2004 Hell Yeah - If everything is on the up&up. That's an expensive toy under normal circumstances. That almost sounds too good to be true. One thing to think about though, Duc's require a lot of maintenance - not that it's not an awesome scooter cuz it's simply badass - Needs valve adjustments around every 5k or so and if you're not mechanically inclined it can be a pricey toy to own. And boy, once you see all of the exquisite carbon fiber goodies ....oooo you'll be in big trouble with the credit card companies But man is it ever a sweet ride. Lots o low rpm torque and your wrists will be killin' ya after an hour or two but hey, I haven't met anyone to date that doesn't think it's worth it Keep the shiny side upZ
