FlailingJohn 0 #1 June 13, 2004 I am so sick of winblows. To start off I have windows xp. and thing Ive noticed that most computer problems people post here have to do with windows. my problem started when all I did was switch the memory usage in performance options. When i restarted the computer. it took forever and it eventually gave me a stop error. which is "0xc0000142". The so called xp manual say if you have internet access to search the stop error code on their website. luckily I have 2 computers and I do find a similar code on microsofts website. The only thing they can suggest is reinstall window xp. Now this might sound easy enough but the windows xp upgrade cd I owned was flemsy. It somehow got caught in my CD tray and literally shattered like glass in my cd rom drive. when the cd tray closed on it. I had to take my cd rom case apart to clean out the millions of cd fragment- ugh!!!!!!!! Right Now I dont have the money to spend on another winXp cd. again all i did was change somethings under performance options and it really preformed an option i really didnt want. I am being sarcastic on the free linux cd. I just needed to vent alittle. Anyone know the best linux os for an indermediate user? John >
WFFC 1 #2 June 13, 2004 Just an idea since I had done something similar to this a few years ago, call microsoft...Had an Office CD that got stuck in the drive...the spindle literally bore a hole through the cd. They replaced the CD for free. So, if your XP upgrade cd was 'legit', give them a call.----- ~~~Michael

CrazyRock 0 #4 June 13, 2004 go to http://www.linuxiso.org/.. from there, you can download a lot of the linux distros to try out.. if you just want to try out linux w/o installing it, knoppix is a distro you can run from cd.. i've had probs getting it to work on some computers tho... Lindows (lindows.com) is supposed to be a real user freindly one, but you have to pay for it, and i didn't like it a whole lot... Out of the linux distros i've seen, I still like Red hats "Fedora" the best. (where Red hat used to also have the consumer version, they have now split it, and the consumer version is called the fedora project.) it is pretty user freindly, and easy to install.. and probably has the best gui out of all of them, but its still a little lacking... Of course, now that MacOS X is based off of FreeBSD with the Darwin kernal, I say: Buy a mac dude!!!! they have all the power and stability of a unix/linux platform now, plus all of the ui of the macs.. best way to go if you ask me. -Seth :)
nathaniel 0 #5 June 13, 2004 Well, if you can get into an O/S to get started I'd recommend using jigdo to download debian iso's. All you need is disc 1 and from there you can do a network install of the software you want over teh intarnet. http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/ Use the testing images, I just tried them on a lab machine at work and they're very easy to use and had a lot of neato features like support for RAID and exotic native filesystems like jfs and xfs. ymmv. nathanielMy advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. FlailingJohn 0 #6 June 13, 2004 Thank you...I am goign to try and look at some of the links to see which one would be best for me. Btw I did get my computer running in windows again. I went into safe mode and changed by the settings the way I had them. It solved proplem but my user profile had been erased. I do have 2 harddrives on my computer so Ill try to install two operating systems. If i find a linux i like then i will nix windows if i had the money to buy a mac i would but i rather spend 3-5k. I would rahter spend it at a tunnel camp/aff at perris or in deland fla. So I can finally get off of student status. but right now im unemployed looking a new career >I threw my confidence out the airplane door years ago......... Casch 0 #9 June 13, 2004 I've never used any linux distro's, but I want to learn. I just read about as much info as my mind can take in tonight about unix, linux and I read a bunch about Gentoo. So far gentoo looks like a pretty good option. Is it? lol... I do some mild gaming, Counter-Strike, Diablo, UT. Use MSN messenger quite a bit, dunno if I would be able to do that with gentoo. I also do some (extremely) mild photo editing. What distro should I use??
loudawg 0 #10 June 13, 2004 Any distro will do the stuff you are saying you normally do. Gentoo has a steep learning curve at first, since it does NOT have any kind of user friendly installation program. You just gotta follow the manual and type all that shit in yourself. Once you learn it though, in my opinion it's the best, because it only installs what you tell it to, and you don't get all the crap the other distros load by default. Plus, everything is compiled and optimized for your system. And Portage is just so cool. It makes it sooo easy to install packages. It does all the dependency calculations for you and stuff. It's the only one I use now. If you want something to get more experience on first, though, choose an easier distro like Mandrake which is very user friendly, or Fedora like mentioned before....Fedora seems to be the distro of choice for everyone that I've talked to in the computer lab at my university....I'm all about Gentoo though, and I get shit for it, but still I think it's the best. Like I said, once you figure it out, it is so easy and things work beautifully (and fast too). As far as the stuff you want to run, all those games you mentioned work great under Linux either natively (UT, I have it installed right now), or using Wine (like Counterstrike, which runs awesome using Wine). Your photo editing can be done using the GIMP, which, in many ways, is much more powerful than Photoshop. I use Gaim for chatting online, which supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, and a bunch more. It's a great program. Every day I have people asking me to fix their broken Windows installation, and it makes me happier each time that I am a 100% Linux user. No more rediculous problems that Windows gave me (and others). I don't wanna bash Windows and claim Linux is the ONLY way to go like many do. For the general user, it's a good operating system. For me though, the headaches aren't worth it, and Linux is the OS of choice. I am so much happier with it. I just wish there was more widespread support for it by the major software and hardware companies. Maybe one day . . . For a while you'll most likely get a little frustrated with the new environment, and will find yourself going back to Windows for certain things, but hang in there. For now just set up a dual boot setup so you can use either system when you feel like it. Good luck, and welcome to the lighter side
Casch 0 #11 June 14, 2004 Well, after spending all day trying to get Gentoo running, and getting so close but not quite there, I decided to opt for Mandrake. Easiest OS I've ever installed. This'll keep me occupied for a while
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
