VanillaSkyGirl 6 #1 June 11, 2004 Apparently, my ankle may be worse than I originally thought. Based on the ER X-ray that he examined, the orthopedic specialist that I saw today claims that it looks worse than just a chip that broke off my talus. He pointed out to me what looks like a crack that goes straight through. This would make the fracture much more complicated. I do not need an operation as of now. He did not want to take more X-rays today since I just had them done on Friday. Instead, he wants to X-ray my ankle in 3 weeks with my cast still on. (Yes, they put a cast on today. It's black.) I'm to have my ankle completely immobile for at least 2 months. When it finally heals enough, he says that I can then begin to relearn how to walk. He told me that I would not be skydiving for about 4 months. I know that I should count my blessings, but I'm pretty sad.

PhreeZone 20 #9 June 11, 2004 Wanna toss in the length that we are really grounded due to flooding, high winds, low clouds, sleet, hail and snow and you can push that out to 6 months. Michele 1 #10 June 11, 2004 Yes, it's a long time. Or, you could look at it this way... You have a great excuse to not jump when it's 108 outside....by the time you get back, the summer heat will have abated, and you'll be all good to go through the better temperatures in the fall months. So sorry, Ro'. Hang in there. A friend of mine (who's a skydiver [edited to add: no, it's not Sparky!!!]) is having surgery tomorrow, and they expect it will be an entire year before he gets back in the air. I think he, like you, will surprise everyone with your healing powers, and be back before then... Hugs! Same here in OK. As for injuries, I had a bad sprain right before Quincy '00. The week before. I went and jumped on it anyway since I was a 50-jump chump. Man, that thing didn't heal right for 5 months. I wish I'd broken it instead.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
bsoder 0 #12 June 11, 2004 QuoteHe told me that I would not be skydiving for about 4 months. When Steph (my wife) broke her ankle, they told her anywhere from "at least 18 months, mabye never again" (ER doc) to "four to six months" (surgeon.) She made her first jump at six weeks - with the surgeon's blessing. Everybody heals differently... just wait and see.
Paige 0 #13 June 11, 2004 I'm sorry to hear that you will be out but i'm sure it could be much worse. cocheese 0 #14 June 11, 2004 Awe i feel so bad for you. Damn landing gear anyhow. But like Phreezone was saying...... we endure long time outs. Maybe you could do the tunnel in a month or so ? Or at least get some air in the right seat of the plane. You have great friends that will help you get through those summer time blues.Put that jump money in a jar for Sept/Oct and jump your little buns off. slug 1 #15 June 11, 2004 HI VSG Sorry to hear the news. Full leg cast or below the knee? Pic's, x-rays? The techs will burn you a extra copy of the xray for little or no charge. Someone said Tunnel, exercise, maybe call it P.T. medical insurance or tax deduction. You'll fly like a birdGood luck, don't start scratching the itch under the cast. Once you start you won't be able to stop. R.I.P.

VanillaSkyGirl 6 #17 June 11, 2004 QuoteWelcome to the length of grounding the entire midwest faces every winter Well...I obviously wouldn't care as much if the weather was bad and if my fellow skydivers in the state couldn't jump. It's knowing that I can and not being able to join in on my friend's fun that is upsetting. I hate being teased like that. It sucks. I broke my ankle when: * it's summer...I am one of those bony freaks who is NEVER warm, so being on the plane in 110 degree heat is comfortable and even preferred I am actually warm enough for once! * I live in Southern California and can jump at Perris Elsinore, San Diego, etc. any day of the week (or fly in the tunnel) * I am going to miss a bunch of boogies all summer long, including the big one ~ WFFC (It would have been my first year...) * I had some goals and plans which I will have to put on hold for 1/3 of a year (I had major plans for myself...and I will STILL follow through when my ankle heals...just have to wait for another year) * my skydiving was at a huge turning point...I was improving and learning so much & sooo HUNGRY to begin to compete and even push myself with beginner bigways & wingsuit flying... Well, when I am healed...I am going to be ALL OVER IT!!! I can already tell that I am going to be hungry for it... Grrrrrrr....
VanillaSkyGirl 6 #18 June 11, 2004 QuoteAnd....if you need a 2-hour car-wash, I'm your guy. Oh Kris, how I needed you today! After the doctor's appointment, I filled my tank, and then I went through the Drive-thru Carwash. My car had Perris and Elsinore dust on it... Thanks for the nice post...
