Cadmium or stainless steel

Recommended Posts

I suppose you mean the rings on the risers, rather than the risers themselves. Risers are the webbing part, which are neither cadmium nor steel. And cadmium rings are really steel with a cadmium coating on them for corrosion resistance. But I can't tell from the photos which yours are. Why is the identity of these important? They should work either way.

They are spare risers that have sat around in my locker so i'm selling them. One prospective buyer is keen to know if the rings are Cadmium because he wants to use them on an older rig? Perhaps someone can shed some light here a to why he wouldn't want stainless steel rings?

Looks like cadmium to me.

Jumpers typically want cadmium risers if the base ring on their harness is cadmium. It's not a problem to mix and match material types, it's just, why pay more for stainless risers when I've got cadmium base rings? Budget may also play a factor.

Easy way to tell. Shiny equals stainless. Those are not shiny.

There is no reason to not want the stainless except cost. Either type will do.

A good reason to not want the cad plated...cadmium is toxic. I don't know how much exposure a person might get from this hardware, but it could be substantial if you mess around with the webbing after a bunch of dust has rubbed off on it. Anyway, there is no good reason for playing with toxic metals such as this. But who knows, maybe it is only dangerous during manufacture.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Check with a magnet. Cadmium-plated steel is magnetic; stainless steel is not.

While it's true that some grades of stainless are not magnetic, the stuff we typically get in the skydiving industry is magnetic. Less magnetic than cadmium, but magnetic none the less.
