Vallerina 2 #1 May 6, 2004 At one time there was a fad of playing, "I'll Be Watching You," at weddings. Playing a song about an obsessive stalker at a wedding just seems kind of odd. In "Revenge of the Nerds," one of the nerds rapes a girl, and people are rooting for him to win her over. Then, the girl that he raped actually falls in love with him. They continued to make numerous movies with him as a "hero" in a sense. I'm still not sure if the Pina Colada song is supposed to be romantic, but that's always disturbed me. Two people are unhappy with each other, and neither one of them are honest enough to talk about it with one another. There are so many things that when you think about it, it's actually disturbing. There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

Darius11 12 #4 May 6, 2004 There are many things that are disturbing. Many songs, movies you name it. You most of the time have the choice not to watch or listen. I guess i just don't see your point. Vallerina 2 #5 May 6, 2004 QuoteI guess i just don't see your point. No point really. It's just an observation. I like the song "I'll Be Watching You," but I don't want someone to try to serenade me with the line, "Can't you see....you belong to me!" It's just kinda funny that people will take something that's insane and make it seem romantic. I'm sure I've done the same a time or two...it's just funny. There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
EricaH 0 #6 May 6, 2004 Kinda like Tom Petty's Last Dance w/ Mary Jane, in the Vid... that bothers me. I understand where you're coming from in Revenge of the Nerds & I'll Be Watching You - creepy. I sure hope neither of those things happen to me or any friend of mine!! I don't know the Pina Colada song well enough. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. misskriss 0 #8 May 6, 2004 I remember Sting talking about that... that the song, 'I'll be Watching You' was not a romantic ballad at all.. so then he wrote 'If you Love Somebody Set Them Free' song to counter it.. You are right about the Revenge of the Nerds... that scene always gave me the willies.
Kennedy 0 #9 May 6, 2004 I think she meant the black costume and the moon bounce room. The girl though he was her guy, he knew it, and well, you get the idea. "I'll be watching you" was about somebody not trusting somebody else, there was no love intended at all. It was all about 'I don't trust you, so I'll keep my eye on you.' "Escape" (the pina colada song) really is a F-ed up story. Two people in a real relationship both decide to cheat, find want ads they like, set a meeting, and find out it's each other they really like. edit: damn this must've taken me a long time to post witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

EricaH 0 #11 May 6, 2004 I guess some guys would be fine having their g/f's arch enemy screw them unbeknownst to them. If that happened to my b/f I'd kill her first, then him. It's strange that entertainers can make something so appealing to the masses that we take on the song/movie/video... as a cultural almost icon. Who doesn't know the lines to "i'll be watching you" we sing it in the car, play nerds & porkeys & many others in our homes to children - sheesh. anyway, i'm on the edge of a "speakers corner" discussion here, so I'm backing away now.... There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)

Actually, the song is about stalking someone...not keeping an "eye on someone"...If I remember correctly it was based on a real celebrity stalking incident, but for the life of me I can't remember who or any other details......You are right about one thing, there was absolutely no love intended in the song...at least not from both sides... ~R+R~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Fly the friendly skies...^_^...})ii({...^_~... lawrocket 3 #16 May 6, 2004 Actually, there are some other things I find VERY disturbing... Like countdowns until the Olson twins turn 18. It's just gross, isn't it, and seems to me to represent pedophilia (hopefully, this doesn't violate the rules). Or "The 50 Most Beautiful People" all being well-known Hollywood types. The shame? They don't even look like that, and I there are more beautiful people who post on this board than in all of Hollywood. (Addendum - those Hollywood shows like "Access Hollywood" that hawk image. Nothing more than infomercials about how you too can bever be this cool) Product placement - now we've got Spiderman being hawked on bases in a baseball game. What's next? STP logos on 5 dollar bills? Hip hop culture - it's all about the bitches, the bling bling, the crime and the clothes and the attitude. It used to be real and passionate with a true message. Now it sends a message that the only way to the bling bling is the crime and attitude. My wife is hotter than your wife.
DJL 235 #17 May 6, 2004 What? You can't take "I'll be watching you" to be a song about stalking. It's not intended that way and there's not way that can be inferred. It's about being in love with someone you don't quite trust. Misskriss, Sting said it's not a love ballad, it's about being emotionally trapped, and yes, "If you love somebody" is counter to that, but not a comeback. It's the difference between looking at a girls house as you walk by and hiding in the bushes."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
happythoughts 0 #18 May 6, 2004 QuoteEvery breath you take And every move you make Every bond you break, every step you take I'll be watching you Every single day And every word you say Every game you play, every night you stay I'll be watching you I thought it was written to his ex-wife after their divorce. Anything that keeps repeating "I'll be watching you" sounds like stalking to me.
misskriss 0 #19 May 6, 2004 Sting penned the words and much has been made of the fact that when he wrote it he was in the middle of breaking up with his first wife Frances Tomelty. Although it has been subsequently denied many saw it as a possessive reaction to the split. In later interviews however, Sting did concede that writing songs helped him through this very difficult time, as he "processed the grief of it through songwriting and performing". http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/soldonsong/songlibrary/indepth/everybreathyoutake.shtml
EricaH 0 #20 May 28, 2004 k, how bout this song "there's a halo hanging from the corner of my g/f 4 post bed. i know it's not mine, but i'll see if i can use it for the weekend or a one-night stand...." if he has a g/f what's w/ the one-night stand? and why would he need if for a weekend? then later he says "once again, as predicted (or unpretected), left my broken heart open & you ripped it out." what's he bitchin bout? he's the one potentially cheeting? anyway, just heard it on the radio & i thought of this thread. Now it sends a message that the only way to the bling bling is the crime and attitude. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I remember 'Rappers Delight' and how witty and cool that song was. Now its 'bangin' on the bathroom floor' and lying about it. What a nice message. Its crossed over so much, there's a counter-culture in Japan that idolizes it. There are university-level classes analyzing this as the 'new poet society'. I have no problem with that..I have a problem with 6 year olds 'poppin' it' (its a dance..you've all seen them on the videos if you don't do it yourself). But this has been a generational problem since the beginning of time. Remember the controversy of 'ooga-shakala laka' in the Hooked on Believing song (I hate that damned song....)....but 'parents' thought that was a dirty chant. What kind of sex are THEY having?? (sounds like fun!) One song that has ALWAYS troubled me--Alone Again, Naturally (Nillson(sp?))...I wanna hurt myself when I hear that song. Geeze! Give that guy a straight jacket ASAP. Either that or a flippin' bus ticket to a new town. Just thinking about it bums me out~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo!
