Anyone know anything about cats? (No Turtle; not kittens!)

Recommended Posts

What Andrea said. Dry food is best because it helps control tarter. Small amounts of wet or moist food are Ok, but the majority of it's diet should be dry. Also, if it's a male, food low in ash content is best. It's believed that high ash content contributes to painful, costly and potentially deadly urinary tract problems. For the long hair, Petromalt every other day is good to help control hair balls.

Brush him a bit, every few days or so. This will help with bonding between you two,

Bwahaha! My Ceasar (Himilayan) HATES me to brush him. It takes Merrick and I both to hold him down and do it. He won't 'speak' to me for days after. (BTW, we also call him "Fuzzy Butt" as much as his real name. And yes, cats do recognize their names :)
Definately get kitty checked out. You don't want him getting sick. The only cat I can give a bath is my declawed one. The other two will kill me. They tried. They have short hair tho so it's usually okay.

Definately hairball formula. Helps the poor long-haireds a LOT! Advantage is a good flea stuff...I know of a site where you can get it MUCH cheaper then the vet. Hmmm...oh..if it's a male and you have him in the house, he will spray! Getting him fixed will help some and Petsmart has some good products to put in an area that he might particularly like.

One more thing is if you find a litter he/she likes, stick with it. Changing it will piss it off and you won't like your cat pissed off. EW!

That's all of my ideas! Probably repeats of other since I didn't read them all ;)

OH!! Anyone know anything about cat seizures?? My old cat, about 13-14 yrs (he's adopted so no sure idea) has woken me up twice in the last 6 months because he was having a seizure. Is this an age thing and do I need to do something??

One of my cats (Mr6) HATES to be brushed..the other (Jesusa) is a freak for being stroked in ANY manner. All the posts so far have been right on the money..find out who he belongs to (why doesn't he have ANY type of collar??) and if he doesn't belong to anyone, he's yours.
If you can't tell the sex he's probably neutered (or a female) but you NEED to get him/her fixed. YOU DO NOT WANT A MALE CAT SPRAYING IN YOUR HOUSE (I emphasize that because you said its your first cat). The smell NEVER comes out and will knock you out cold when you come into your home.
For names...I like Mr7 (cause I have mr6). Or Miss Terry (mystery) or Getoffthere (it works...lol).
Cats think they own US, so get used to putting up with his/her moods.Always remember--YOU are there to provide entertainment and food for the cat. what YOU think doesn't matter.
S/he is beautiful...good luck and I'm dying to know what you name it.~~AprilCAT (hint, hint)

It's not too surprising the cat has no collar. I have 2 cats (Rex and Oliver) and I would never put a collar on them because I would be concerned they would choke if they caught it on something.

I just feed both of them a presciption dry cat food I get from the vet because of a history of UTI. It's not much more expensive than the stuff from the grocery store and at least I know they are getting proper nutrition.

feline luk and rabies should be TOP on the list. make sure you do the fe - luk test before you do a vaccine. some clinics will just do the vaccine b/c it costs more. then of course rabies and distemper.

check to see if he's declawed. that'll be a good sign of whether he's had a home before. also, look at his paws. if the pads are moderately cracked, or there is severe dryness between the claws, that's a GOOD sign of if and how long he's been living outside.

if he ends up a she, and she's not spayed, do it soon. he/she looks older, and the longer they go unspayed the higher risk they run for hyperplasia and pyometra. NOT pretty and NOT cheap! of course neuter him if he's a him lol. im goin' with michele though - judging by paw size and his facial features, he looks like a he.

dont buy the flea dips from the grocery store or pet store. take him to the vet, have him bathed, shaved, and flea dipped, and while thats going on set off a bomb at home. just to be safe. that should take care of any concern.

oh, and DEFINATELY have him wormed. it usually takes a series of 2-3 worming treatments. if he's been living outside and unvaccinated, he's been exposed to all the elements and likely has at least roundworms. or do a fecal exam at your vet and check. id do the wormings regardless of the test results, though. start heartworm prevention now!!!! there's no cure or treatment for cats! if they get it, thats it. :(

he's so damn cute!!!!!! i like the name 'phil' someone had mentioned. he definately looks like a phil. have fun! he looks like he's got a lot of character lol

oh - a good way to tell if the kitty is a boy or girl - lift up the tail...both sexes have 2 holes visible from this angle, but on a female, the holes are close together. on a male, if he is neutered he will still have testes, they will just be significantly smaller. if theres anything resembling a little something extra, he's a he. sometimes its hard to see w/ an untrained eye.
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

MissImperfect,

I was told you can't really tell for sure if a female is spayed without cutting her open. When I took in a stray female cat, I just waited to see if she went into heat, and she never did.

That cat is so fat and healthy looking, I have a hard time believing he or she is a stray. He certainly hasn't missed many meals.

Oh and Yoink, FYI, I've never known a cat who doesn't LOVE tuna, but its not supposed ot be good for them! If you're going to keep feeding your new buddy, get some dry cat food from the store. If he snubs it, that's a sure sign he's no stray!

Holy Crap!
Shots, baths, vaccines and three different types of food?
This cat's going to be better looked after than me! :D:D:D

The neighbours say he's actually a she that's been around for about a year and sponges food off all of them. My kind of animal! :P:ph34r:

Right, now I need a name...
More suggestions?

She...

Well, now you need to bring HER to the vets, and make sure she's good to go. You don't want baby sponges hanging around, do ya? LOL!

Congratulations again. You have been chosen. Regardless of her sponging off others, she seems to have decided you and your home are hers to claim...sort of like how Charlotte chose me (she just walked in the back door one night, and hasn't left since...even though she was "sponging" off the neighbors, too...).

As for names, that's so personal. I can't help you there. My current cats are named Charlotte, Esse, Pie, and Penguin, and those that came before were named Tron, Penny, and Bitch Kitty. B| See? Personal.

Ciels-
Michele

She's been sponging quite well from the looks of her! And I guess she's adopted you- congrats!

I would definitely take her to the vet for a basic check up and shots. If she's got fleas, deal with them. She doesn't look all that badly matted from the pictures, but mats close to her skin can be really painful, so ask about that too. I've got a long haired tabby, but his coat is pretty low maintenance for a long haired cat. Rarely mats and he won't sit still to be brushed all that often. Not too many cats will actually let you bathe them, so approach that with caution if you decide its necessary! And any decent quality dry food will probably be fine!

And I can honestly say my cats probably have better healthcare and a higher quality diet than me! Plus, they get to sleep all day while I'm at work earning their keep! What's up with that??

She's a beauty! I'm sure the right name will come to you as you get to know her better.

Good luck!

Oh man you are screwed now... you fed it. If you're a corn-on-the-cob lover... try this sometime: Give one of the leftover cobs (after you've eaten the corn off of it) to your cat. Note its reaction. Cats will surprise you at what they'll eat. They like to eat the heads off of small furry creatures and leave the decapitated bodies lying around for the sun to bake into a permanent yard fixture.

Cats are overall good creatures.... y'just have to boil the meat for several hours to break down the collagen in the connective tissue- that way it's nice and tender before you actually throw it on the grill with some Frank's Red Hot.

Shave it with hair clippers if its fur is matted. Then dress it up in doll clothes so it won't be ashamed of itself when it has to go near other cats... cats hate being humiliated... especially by something as lowly as a human.

If you try to look it straight in the eye it should look away, unamused. This is a sure sign of a healthy cat.

Cats provide hours and hours of entertainment for their keepers; wadded up masking tape on the bottoms of their feet will have you in stitches. Clothespins on the end of the tail are also fun.

Never try to take your new cat skydiving; cats don't like skydiving. They do, however, enjoy bridge jumping into deep plunge pools. Make sure the ground crew is waiting with appropriate cat retrieval gear (a big fish net works well, though is difficult to remove the cat once netted) for safety's sake.

Don't forget to buy your cat some catnip. Cats love to get high.
