GogglesnTeeth 6 #4 May 19, 2004 Well odviously, I would consider Skydiving pretty extreme.... I think extreme sports are sports that can easily kill you if you don't know what the hell you are doing. DJL 235 #8 May 19, 2004 Hey, instead of rehashing the same language used in marketing to every twerp with a skateboard, that you make a pitch with more interesting angles towards adrenaline and adventure sports and competition. Unless you're just going to make fun of the term "eXtreme". Then maybe people will realize that it's overused and I won't feel like shoving a fork in my eye every time I hear it. Here's one angle: The people who really do get into adventure competition don't drink Mountain Dew. They're ex highschool and college athletes or people who feel like they don't get enough out of their 9 to 5 job..."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

The111 1 #11 May 19, 2004 The phrase "extreme sports" was created by ESPN in conjunction with the "extreme games", a contest series that featured many different progressive sports hence unknown to the general public. This had the effect of killing a lot of independent contest series that had been running for a long time (this is true with BMX at least, the sport I'm the most familiar with). TV coverage did do some good for the sport of BMX and the other "eXXXtreme!!! sports", but it also did some harm. And a minor annoyance is within months of the inception of the extreme games, the word extreme was being used in marketing to label everything from tacos to toy dinosaurs. The word sucks. And Maddox rules.www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Unstable 9 #18 May 19, 2004 IMHO, "Extream" sport as we see them on ESPN or elsewhere are defined my their market ability more than the nature of the event itself. Lets think about this - Skydiving is not much of an "Extream" sport as is skateboarding or rollerblading, or at least in the eyes of the television executives. Why?? Some little dweeb can watch a skateboarding show and then want his mom to take him to Wal-Mart to buy a Skate Board - other than maybe Marketing Tandems to a few attentive watchers, Skydiving has no real "Extream" appeal to the networks... Golly, I'm sure that little speech of mine here has been posted by hunderds of users in hundreds of posts before...=========Shaun ==========
BASE813 0 #19 May 19, 2004 I hate the label extreme... What exactly does it mean? I dont think its the sport that has the label for the sports nature and possible out come - its the label these armchair sports people use as its too extreme for them to get their lazy asses outta their LazyBoy chairs and participate instead of wanting to be attached to these sports. I mean - even riding a bike is an extreme sport to them!! As for what people term more hardcore - it's all relevant, I know skydivers who wont BASE, I know BASE jumpers that wont cave dive............ whos to say what is more and what is less......... just my 2 hops worth....... Then the skateboarders and BMXers came along with their baggy trousers and "extreme" attitudes... Wrong, wrong, wrong. BMX and skateboarding were around and thriving for DECADES before ESPN invented the phrase "extreme sports". I preferred (and still do) to call these "progressive sports". While I realize it was written partly as a joke, I take a little offense to your statement about BMXers, etc "coming along with extreme attitudes". Almost every BMXer I know HATES the way that words gets attached to their sport, and equally hates the way their sport is used in all sorts of marketing ploys now. Agreed, the word extreme sucks. But there is nothing more innacurate (and annoyingly ironic) than blaming the ATHLETES for the insurgence of the word exteme. I've said it once and I'll say it again - ESPN started that! You're blaming the victims.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
