Norton VS McAfee

Recommended Posts

I installed Norton 2004 Internet Security and it's done nothing but bog my computer down, screw with the network and make my programs freeze up. I'm constantly having to uninstall and reinstall it. I'm uninstalling it for good now and want to install either just Norton Virus Protection or McAfee Virus Scan. I've never used McAfee before. Which do you guys prefer?

Just install Norton Anti-Virus. Their security "firewall" is a pain in the ass. If you want a "firewall", download ZoneAlarm for free, or buy BlackICE.

Just my geeky opinion:

Installing "monitoring" software is one of the many reasons why systems crash or decrease performance, the reason is that those programs use systems resources and the more you install the more memory and resources will get used up, therefore the slow performance.

The best solution: EDUCATION, what I mean by that is BE CAREFUL with all the stuff you download or hit your computer (such as cookies, jave applets, etc), my advise would be, install something like Zone Alarm Pro, and check your system for viruses regularly, you don't need to be a computer geek to do all what I've mentioned above, and you don't need to even install several scanners on your system, you can do that online and FREE, check this site for example: Trend Micro, Symantec and McAfee

I've used McAfee for years! I have one of those yearly subscriptions that automatically checks for updates when I'm online.
All anti-virus software that I've tried slows the system down a little.. you just have to check what all it's doing at start up and while it's running.
I don't have a firewall... I don't feel I need it.
I shut off either my internet or the computer when I'm not home... and I keep an eye on what it's doing while online as well.
good luck! Sometimes un-installing an anti-virus program can be tough!!

Norton IMO has always been more proactive in getting updates out than McAfee. IMO, norton also is better at cleaning an infected file back to it's original whereas McAfee tends to quarantine or delete the file more often.

i have nothing on my computer :) in old MS-DOS era it was hard to survive without anti-virus, now it's it's not that hard. majority of viruses are run by user him/herself, opening attachments.

My Geek opinion agrees with Ivan. Monitoring software slows your system down. I have found over the years that Norton writes pretty crappy software that installs poor and never fully uninstalls - plus it always has too many processes running in the background.

A combination of just the McAfee Virus software with ZoneLabs works the best, and is a cheap combination.

Also - there is no need to have more than four or five things running next to your clock. The more you have in that bar, the slower your stuff is gonna run. Why? Everything in that bar is snagging some of your performance so it can stay open/running.

Thanks for the info everyone. I uninstalled it and just downloaded the regular Norton Anti Virus and now my computers back to being lightning fast.

We have to have some kind of protection because my boss tends to try and open everything. Yeah he's one of those....

So how do you get stuff off that bar but still have it available?

Partially related question. I have "FAX MONITOR" as a "service" on my laptop (Win2000). I don't need it, don't want it, but can't seem to get rid of it. Any suggestions?

right click "my computer" scroll to "manage" expand "Services and Applications" select "services". look down the list for the "fax monitor" double click on it. change "Startup type" to disabled. Either STOP the service by clicking on "STOP" or restart the PC

Okay another question I have is that my msn always starts up when I turn on the computer. I've gone into options and declicked the box that says start with windows.

How do I stop it from opening automatically, and change it so it only opens when I go into the start menu/programs and open it myself.

??????

I'd have to disagree a little bit. I swear by McAfee 7. Best anti-virus out there, bar none. The way it works is that it keeps track of what files have been scanned and does not scan them again unless they change (size, datestamp, etc.). It also scans any new file that is being written and any file on access (unless it has previously scanned it and the file has not changed). It does (like any virus scanner) take up a small amount of system resources though.

I dont use any soft firewalls, but my personal router has a pretty decent and configurable hard firewall built into it. That being said, I totally agree with Ivan's suggestion of education... and even just common sense. MOST viruses are out there b/c Joe Schmoe keeps opening email attachments that he has no idea who they are from or what they will do. He just knows that by golly, it sure would be nice to see the new picture entitled "Britney_spears_hoohoos.jpg.pif" that some guy from Europe just sent him... never mind the fact that he has no idea who sent it to him.

But then again with all of the Microsoft security vulnerabilities around, you'd be safer learning Linux... Some of the new virii do not require any user intervention to infect your machine (if you are not up to date on your security patches).

And yes, I work in IT Infrastructure for a living. :)

I assume that you are running XP...

Go to :

Start --> Run --> type 'gpedit.msc'

Once that opens, under "computer configuration" click on 'Administrative Templates' --> 'Windows Components' --> 'Windows Messenger' --> Then in the right pane, you will double click on 'Do not automatically start windows messenger initially'

Change that to enabled... hit apply, then ok... then close out of the Group Policy window...

Of course, you must be listed in the administrators group for this to work.

Done. : )

Next?

I have to manage the public access computers in my officers mess. I have installed Norton on one and McAfee on the other as an experiment. So far neither have a virus but the McAfee is easier to manage - automoatically checking for updates unlike Norton but I get a warmer feeling from Norton as I can see it doing something.

May I suggest.. Avg Grisoft The BomB! I have used Both Norton and Mcafee including Bullguard. From the looks of all things considered Grisoft free version works just as good as anything I've seen out there just
keep it updated. Need a Fire wall..BlackIce or Zonealarm will do the Job..

Happy Computing..;)

I'm using Norton antivirus. Lately it has been identifying viruses in my computer, but it can't repair them, only quarantine them.>:(
and yes, I've got all the updates.

YTF am I paying for this??>:(

Yup, as I just posted earlier this week, Avast is an anti-virus scanner that you can swear by, not at.

www.avast.com

It's honestly good enough that if they started to charge for it, I'd gladly pay.

I don't like Norton because it is imposible to fully uninstall. It fucks up my trash can "norton protected trash can" sucks! It also puts icons in your Control Panel that won't go away even if you un install correctly. The Norton Firewall is not as good as ZoneAlarm. As for antivirus, I use Panda Titanium, it runs quietly in the background without any noticable slow down of performance.
