jimmytavino 16 #9 May 25, 2010 yes i HAVE one... cypres... i arm it at the start of any day during which i'll be jumping... on site, AT the elevation of the landing area... and just prior to to doing a full gear check before i put the rig on my back... for the first jump of the day...never have allowed it to activate... ..i try to skydive in such a way, that i will never put it in a situation where IT feels the parameters exist,,, such that,,, it NEEDS to cut my closing loop... I've found that it Always cycles,,, always energizes correctly, and always shuts itself OFF.. approx. 14 hours after i've turned it on...i'd rate it to be a reliable component of my gear... i have 4 years left.... not sure what i'll do .....then..... jt a 3914 d 12122

captain1976 0 #11 May 25, 2010 Sure do and after having one for many years, I feel naked when I make that occasional jump on other gear that doesn't.You live more in the few minutes of skydiving than many people live in their lifetime
Amazon 7 #12 May 25, 2010 Yes Both Rigs Cypres II I just think its VERY cheap insurance in case something happens to incapacitate me, like being slammed into a door on exit. I also strive not to scare my Cypres into doing what it is designed to do. I have seen two outs and I do not want to ever see that mess above my head, nor do I want to join that elite club of people who have had a Cypres fire because they lost altitude awareness.I guess its better than being dead.. but not the club I wanna join
councilman24 37 #13 May 25, 2010 You certainly used the motor, but not the clutch and machine head. Your electric bill says so.Turn on the cypres it starts calibrating to ground, monitoring for take off, measuring for firing criteria, disabling firing at the minimum altitude, and turns off after 14 hours. Sure sounds like you used it to me. You could say you used the cutter because continuity was checked during start up. So resistance through cutter was measured. Hell yes you used it! Doesn't matter that it didn't fire the cutter and save your ass. It was seeing if it needed to. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

Doesn't matter that it didn't fire the cutter and save your ass. It was seeing if it needed to. Okay, I see what you are saying. But, as a common understanding, does one use something if it does not actually accomplish the designed purpose? In this case, I chose to define the purpose of the AAD as cutting the reserve closing loop. It hasn't done that yet, though we assume it was ready to. Looking at another skydiving example, my rig has a reserve. I made a skydive, and landed under my main parachute. Did I use the reserve? I think that most people would say "no", even though by your explanation, it would be just as reasonable to say "yes". Now, maybe you want to make a distinction because of the "turning on" aspect of the AAD, whereas the reserve does not need any particular preparation before each jump. So, did I use the car's airbag if I didn't have an accident? Again, I think the common answer would be "no", even though there were steps taken to ready the device when I turned on the car. (Thanks! This is fun. Really.)
billvon 2,989 #17 May 25, 2010 >Did I use the reserve? Did you utilize the reserve? No; you didn't deploy it. Is the reserve now used? Yes. Packing a reserve is what wears it out, and you did that.

Packing a reserve is what wears it out, and you did that. Now you are being pickier than I am. Do you dispute that most people would not claim to have used the reserve if it was not deployed on the jump? Among the general jumping population, what does it mean when someone says he "used his reserve"? It means he deployed it.
