ChasingBlueSky 0 #51 May 11, 2004 QuoteI do really like the Prius...one concern though is whether or not maintenance costs are higher than regular vehicles. I haven't been able to find any figures on average maintenance/repairs costs for the Prius. I drive 37 miles each way to work, a hybrid would be really nice! Do you own one, billvon? I'm still getting a silver one Too bad the wait is over 6 months at the moment. When I left work this morning gas was 1.99 for 87, on the way home it was 2.09 after the crude oil price drop announcement. Usually the gas 75 miles outside of Chicago at the DZ is cheap and that was still 1.95 this weekend._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Byron03 0 #52 May 11, 2004 I just paid 65euro for 54 liters on Sunday. That comes out to somewhere between $5 - 5.50/gal depending on the exchange rate. I don't really mind, I'm on a business trip so I'll be reimbursed for it. The weirder thing was when I was at the pump, and the digits are flying by, I automatically put my hand on the trigger when it gets to 13 or so. I have a 15 gallon tank on my car at home and I am so used to the pump stopping there. When the numbers went past 30 I actually looked around to make sure that I wasn't spilling gas on the ground or leaking from someplace.

They don't have the same emission standards that we do so they don't have to worry about less refined gas that pollutes more. I had to laugh this morning....the GoMart near my house recently installed a 90' tall gas price sign. The only problem is that it won't accept the "2" in $2.19. There isn't enough room since the "2" is much wider than the "1". Stupid bastards.(c)2010 Vertical Visions. billvon 3,066 #65 May 11, 2004 >You have finally convinced me to get rid of my Expedition. If you wait a bit, you'll be able to pick up a mid-size hybrid SUV (if you liked the SUV form factor.) The Ford Escape is sorta small but Toyota is coming out with a hybrid Highlander. One of the pluses of these vehicles is that they are both heavier and have a lower CG than ordinary SUV's due to the battery pack - thus you get the perceived benefit of greater weight and a vehicle less likely to roll than the average topheavy SUV. If you don't like paying that much for gas, stop driving so much. Get a more fuel efficient car. Car pool. Use public transportation. Look into alternative fuels to power your car - you can retrofit your engine or just use it as an 'assist'. billvon 3,066 #72 May 11, 2004 If gas prices get any higher, things like biodiesel are actually going to be cheaper than petroleum. Biodiesel sells for between $2.50 and $3.00, and of course is not linked to crude oil prices (but is linked to harvests.) That will have an interesting effect. Imagine US farmers making money instead of losing money due to high oil prices!
AndyMan 7 #73 May 11, 2004 Quote If gas prices get any higher, things like biodiesel are actually going to be cheaper than petroleum It's going to have to go a lot higher... I know so-cal is getting close to $3.00/gallon, but that high price is caused by a distribution problem, combined with really high demand, and "micro-market" effects of local polution codes. It's similar to Chicago where last weekend I saw $2.30. We drove down south on the weekend (1505 miles... Eeek!), and saw pretty much immediately once we got out of the local micro-market, prices dropped really quickly. Most gas prices in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee were in the low $1.80's, a full $0.40/gallon cheaper than the Chicago area. I don't think BioDiesel will become affordable in markets like Chicago and so-Cal until they're marketable on a mass scale. Nobody is going to want to buy a gas they can't get when they travel out of state, afterall. When the nationwide price starts to approach $3.00 I think it'll take off... But nationwide prices still haven't yet broken through $2.00. On top of that, So-Cal and Chicago will still be micro-markets, and will still have distribution and capacity issues... _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. billvon 3,066 #75 May 11, 2004 >Nobody is going to want to buy a gas they can't get when they travel >out of state, afterall. Well, but that's the cool part about biodiesel. If you can't get it you us regular diesel. But if you're at a place that offers it, and the biodiesel is $2.50/gal and regular diesel is $2.65/gal, which one will you buy? Might you even drive an extra block or two to get it? Such things do not escape the notice of gas station owners.
