Michele 1 #1 May 10, 2004 Anyone know how to ease the pain of a bruised coccyx? Or do I just get to suffer for a while? From what I've read on-line, there really isn't a whole lot I can do. Yes, I landed horribly yesterday. I am hurting for sure today. It's not broken (from what I can tell), but the pain is making itself known each time I sit, shift in my chair, or get up and down. Well, it's making itself known when I cough, sneeze, laugh, or walk down stairs, too. Sigh. Just wondering if there was any sort of stretches, home remedies, or whatever, to help this out. Like Sparky says, there are two methods to learning...repetition and pain. The more pain, the less repetition is needed...I sure hope I don't have to repeat this learning curve too often. LOL ow. Michele 1 #4 May 10, 2004 Quote You may wanna get that one checked M. That's a thought. But I think I'll wait a bit before I do. Unless it's surgery, there's really not much they can do with it...and I've got none of the symptoms common with a broken tailbone. Just lots of pain. Sigh. CornishChris 5 #5 May 10, 2004 I fractured my ass when I was 18 in a climbing accident. Unfortunately there is not a fat lot you can do about it. I recomend a comedy rubber ring to sit on and lying on your front a lot. If it's any consolation you really appreciate being able to sit down after its mended. CJP Gods don't kill people. cloud_monkey 0 #9 May 10, 2004 I'm sorry to hear about your injury - The only thing I can think of is to show you this - Most people imediately feel better about their injuries after looking at my shin after my accident over 3 months ago. The last person I showed this to said, and I quote: "AAAHHHHHH!!!!!! MY EYES!! That leg looks N A S T Y!!! Yegads.....*shudders* Blech! I'm so sorry to hear about your leg...that just looks...ICK! quade 4 #12 May 10, 2004 Hmmm, normally you'd want to remember RICE. Rest Ice Compression Elevation http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/Webpages/Health/injrice.html Try NOT to sit on it as much as you can. This might mean taking some action that might be a little mockable -- like maybe one of the little blow up doughnut thingies to sit on or maybe sitting as little as possible. Maybe you avoid chairs altogether for a while. Ice, well, it might sound a bit kinky, but, you'd do it for any other injury, so go ahead and slap a bag of ice on it. Probably need to be laying face down for it to be comfortable though. I'm not exactly sure how you'll go about compressing or elevating that part of your body, but you're a smart gal and you'll figure something out. One other bit o' advice and I have to preface this by saying I'm NOT a doctor, but I've had my share of minor injuries and I try to use an over the counter anti-inflamatory as quickly as possible to try to bring the swelling down, which in turn will also help with pain et. al. My favorite anti-inflammatory / pain killer is Aleve. Please note that I'm not telling you what dosage to take, but I've found I can at least double the recommended dosage will no bad effects at all and quite a few good effects. True story. A couple of years ago I was shooting accuracy and sinking in my canopy -- PRO style on the hard packed dirt north of the grass at my DZ. Came in a bit too hard and really slammed into the dirt which gave me a pretty good sprain in my ankle. Started swelling immediately and I normally would have stopped jumping for a week or two to let it calm down, but I had a week of 4-way training I was scheduled to begin the next day. Sat out the rest of the day with ice on it and downed several times the recommended dosage of Aleve. Next day the swelling was down and while I wasn't going to be sinking in any canopies soon, I certainly could make a normal, stand-up landing on it and did 14 jumps a day that way for several days. One final word of caution about Aleve -- it's fairly subtle when it comes to pain relief. It's not strong in that department and it might take several dosage periods for you to feel even that effect. It's mostly an anti-inflammatory working to take the swelling down and keep additional pain from cropping up, but damn it's good at that.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
mr2mk1g 10 #13 May 10, 2004 Get it checked out. Get an inflatable rubber ring to sit on and stick the area of most pain over the hole. Then take non-steroidal anti-inflamatories.

jumpinjackflash 0 #15 May 10, 2004 Well Michele, OUCH!!!!!!! If your lucky though, it won't be as bad as some are saying. I did the same in Nov of last year. Hurt big! However, it mellowed over two weeks and was completely gone. So, maybe you'll be lucky as me and it won't stick around long. peace, jackIt's a gas, gas, gas... weegegirl 2 #16 May 10, 2004 Wow. That sucks Michele. I feel for you. I've broken my tailbone twice... fractured it once when I slipped free climbing and fell 20 feet onto the rock... landed on my ass. Then chipped it skiing. I still can't do situps without quite a bit of pain. I wouldn't even bother going to the doctor. They're going to take a bunch of xrays.... charge you a lot of money... give you some mild pain killers... and send you home with a donut pillow to sit on for 6 weeks. My friends made me an adorable patchwork pillow case for my donut pillow so I wouldn't feel like such an "ass". haha. Good luck, sweetie!
Michele 1 #17 May 10, 2004 You guys are great. Quade, good advice. Yes, RICE'ing it was the order of the day yesterday...and as much as I can today (it will be awkward at work, but oh well...). When it happened, I took 800 mg of an anti-inflamatory, and have continued that (with a break to try margaritas for pain...and they worked, too! LOL). When it happened, I got ice on it right quick. Compression could be one of those control top pair of panty hose, amd elevation is sleeping on my belly.... The pain is much more manageable this morning, thank goodness, but I do believe I will invest in one of those bottom protectors.... Squeak, worry not, the pair will remain...and the pain will leave. Sparky, my pair is staying...but yes, I've got some jumps to get in this week. Frenchy, I've been trying to learn to land for my entire career. My problem on this jump was that I had been flaring waaaaaaaaaaaaay too high. This time, I flared waaaaaaaaaaaay too low....sigh. Somewhere in the middle, I guess. LOL ow. Plummets 0 #18 May 10, 2004 Broke mine skiing, not alot you can do about it, feels like you've been kicked in the arse (ass) for about 6 months !! You'll get very good at sitting with the back of your thighs taking your weight as you'll soon get too embarrassed to carry the rubber ring around with you "Life is a bowl of deadly nightshade, stay way way out on the rim brother"
d_squared431 0 #19 May 10, 2004 Did mine snowboarding just got unbalanced it the air and fell from 20 ft or so straight down on my butt. Just thinking about makes the pain come back. I couldn't sit, stand, lay down, or walk without pain for months. Those donut pillows really work.TPM Sister#130ONTIG#1 I love vodka.I love vodka cause it rhymes with Tuaca~LisaH You having a clean thought is like billyvance having a clean post.iluvtofly
flyangel2 2 #20 May 10, 2004 I think we need to get someone over to your place and give you some TLC. Have that person wait on you, keep ice on your ass, and give it a good rub down How many jumps do you need to get in between now and when I arrive?May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. FlyingEggplant 0 #21 May 10, 2004 I broke my tail bone last fall on a hard landing. Then three weeks later I landed badly again. (I know, I know....bad me) Whatever you do, don't fall on it again! The first time hurt like hell, but it was beareable(ish). The second time I was begging my bf to shoot me and put me out of my misery. I couldn't breath without causing myself excruciating pain, and no amount of pain killers put a dent in it. I agree with Weegegirl, there's not a whole lot of point in going to a Dr. I got a bit loopy after the second time so they took me to the hospital. After 3 hours and lots of X-rays, they didn't even give me any good drugs and sent me on my way. The X-ray guy told me stories about all the suspicious things he'd found in people though... The rubber donuts work the best. The bigger the hole, the better from my experience. The foamy ones hurt, the hole doesn't seem to be in the right spot. When it's really bugging me I take an anti-inflamitory pain reliever. I also find that doing some simple leg stretches every day on the floor allows me to sit for longer periods of time when I'm at work. At first it was tough to find a position on the floor that didn't hurt. We have a C182 at my DZ. On rides to altitude I have to take donut with me or I'd never make it. I put an extra seat belt through him so he doesn't fall out of the plane. Needless to say, all the other jumpers laugh at me
Michele 1 #22 May 11, 2004 Mar...less than 10. It's doable, no doubt...bu who will come over and massage my bottom and then put ice on it? LOL!!! FlyingEggie, thanks for the suggestions. The pain is rather bearable today - I don't believe it's broken at all, but rather bruised. I'll be all right...but I'm sitting cockeyed as we speak. And I'm moving a wee bit funny, too. Thanks again, all! Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
