Quoting Snopes as your source for factual information is like reading comic books for current events.

In this case, Snopes cited an article on the ASPCA webpage written by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. I am inclined to believe it.

Of course, there is only one way to be sure. You get the dog, I'll get the grapes.

'toe the line' and 'up to scratch' are sayings that came from the prize fighting days of pugilism. Each fighter was told to come to the center of the ring at the start of a fight, where a 'scratch' was chalked or dug into the earth.

Still on boxing.....ding ding 'seconds out', comes from the same era, the guys fighting 'second' on the bill were the top billing guys corner men...

and finally...'freeze the balls off a brass monkey' has naval origins. Cannon balls on ships were stacked in a recepticle called a 'monkey' that was made of brass, when the temp' dipped to freezing, the brass would distort, resulting in cannon balls falling off...

ok, last one...

'the whole nine yards', has two theories of origin...

1. Nine yards was the length of .50 cal ammo belts used in the p-51d Mustang in WWII

2. It takes a whole nine yards of cloth to tailor a suit.

..im off to bed.

The duck billed platypus is poisonous.

No it's not,
The male has a poisonous spur on it's leg
Quote

The platypus is the only Australian mammal known to be venomous. Adult males have a pointed spur (about 15 millimetres long) located just above the heel of each hind leg, which can be used to inject poison produced by a gland in the thigh (the crural gland).
Venom is only secreted by mature males, with production peaking during the platypus breeding season in late winter and spring. It is therefore presumed that males mainly use their spurs when competing for mates or breeding territories.
