Should I try to get my bill pro-rated?

Recommended Posts

I use SBC for both phone and DSL service - since Wednesday I have not been able to use the phones due to the large amount of static on the phone (you can't hear the other person). Due to the poor line quality DSL hasn't been working either....and now SBC is telling me they won't pro-rate my bill since I still had a dial tone. I've made tech support calls since Wed night and have been bounced around from department to department....and after finally letting them know how pissed I was they decided to send someone out tomorrow.

So, I am out almost an entire week of service....should I protest and try to get my bill pro rated?

Is the problem before or after the demark? If its their lines that are the problem, yes they should pro-rate... if the problem is in your household lines, and you don't have "in-line wire service" or something that makes them responsible for the line inside you home, then they have no reason to pro-rate it.

I work for SBC Yahoo! DSL, send me a pm with your phone number and I'll look into your account and see what the heck is going on. It should be prorated from my understandings, becuase you were without service. The dialtone doesn't have anything to do with the DSL service honestly, it could have been something messed up at the dslam in the area that caused it. Be sure to double check your filters and make sure you don't have a dead filter on a phone, if the tech comes out and you weren't promissed a free truck roll, they can charge up to $150 for the visit.[:/]

I'll PM you my number - it sounded like it was a free visit - but i've had way too much trouble with SBC over the years to believe it.

I don't think my filter is broken, but I will try another one tonight. Even with all the phones unplugged for ten minutes (their advice) and then just trying DSL with a modem power cycle, the problem was still there.

Yes, absolutely. Get a manager or supervisor on the line and explain the situation to them. You can always threaten to cancel the service (both) and use someone else.

Well I don't know where Chasing lives. Here in Houston SBC is all we got. Telling them or the Electric company to "shove it I'll use someone else" isn't an option they are the 800lb gorillas. They normally do as they wish...

I wish there was an alternitive to SBC for phone service. There is for internet. Just not offered in my condos complex.

Comcast has cable broadband in my area, and AT$T has voice in my area...so I could have options. Honestly - I would just cancel the voice and get the cable modem. My cell phone is enough and if I needed a landline I would consider Vonage.

That's what I'd do... get a mgr to pro-rate the bill & dump um.
Comcast rawks!! Had them for 3 years, w/ moving each year. I've had about 2 days w/o service & they just run their happy asses over & fix the sh*t. They don't charge unless it's a prob INSIDE my apt.
Also, I was able to schedule w/in 30 minutes their arrival time. Once, they were like 1.5 hrs ahead of the schedule, I was on my way home from work & the guy stayed & waited for me...
Comcast is da bomb (IMHO), oh, I've been land line free for 5 years & LOVING it!!

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

That is what I just did, bought basic cable, and a cable modem, disco'd my home phone and DLS. Now our cell phones are our only phones.

Cost is exactly the same and I actually use the cable TV, where as I never used my home phone, it was required to have DSL. (Qwest)

I really don't see any need to go back, especially since my home phone always was having problems (ie. someone would say they called but the phone never rang):S

As there are no service level guarantees for residential service, I'd say you're SOL.

If you really want to push the case, I'd check the state tariffs for SBC. Those will dictate how rates for service are applied. I'm going to bet that there won't be much recourse for you.

An option that will require plenty of on-going effort, and will likely not yield any favorable results, is to complain to your state's PUC.
