I went to Oberweis (mmm...Oberweis) this past weekend, and this hot guy taught me how to play chess, and we played for about two hours.

He beat me every time, and I don't like to be intellectually inferior, so I'm trying to find places online to play. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Yahoo seems like a good place, but I can't play Yahoo Games while at work (which is where I'll be doing most of my playing.) My firewall there is weird, so it's hit or miss on if I can access sites or not. I found a site where I could play a computer, but it had the exact same start to their game, and it wouldn't let me move my pawn how I should've been able to (really...it messed up...I swear I didn't move it to the wrong space!)

You know what I'd like to see? Someone hopped up on Speed playing chess...that could be very odd.

Ok, I really wouldn't like to see that, but it could be a very funny comedy sketch.

Chess for Dummies is actually a really good intro to basic strategy. There are some fairly inexpensive programs that you can buy that will challenge and frustrate you as well.

While not traditional chess, if you like HIGH speed chess action try Kung Fu Chess at http://www.kungfuchess.com/ .

Basically its always your turn (and your opponents) all the time. You can move as many pieces as you like and each piece will create its own timer once it lands on a selected square. You can not move the piece until that squares timer has expired.

Another thing to really screw up the game is that there are two player and four player boards.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I haven't had much time today to play, but I'm sure I will soon. I hate it when I have a big plan while playing chess, and then they do some fancy move, and they ruin it for me! Sigh...I hate losing!

Hi Val,

You might want to look at a book called "How to Think Ahead in Chess". I can't remember the author, but it's an old(er) book. It's an excellent book on strategy and thinking behind the game. Good luck, it can be very frustrating.

Also, check out GNUChess to run on your desktop. Not an online game, and a very tough chess engine, but you can load games and watch the game play out, or play against the computer.

Chess is by far the greatest game. Openings, mid, endgames, pawn developement, open or closed, man I love that game. Do not get to play much anymore. No-one I know here plays.

It is definitely and ego game though. Especially if you start getting into tourney play.

I bought this board at radio shack in 1988 that has magnetic pieces you and the board keep track of. 16 levels and I only suceeding in beating level 1 about 5 times out of a million.

It was cool because you could play either side or two players. Alas it finally succumbed. Maybe I'll try some of those too! Anyone need an idiot to beat up on?

ok i'm totally addicted to kungfuchess...but i'm pretty sure there are a number of people 'cheating' ie using macros to move several peices near simultaniously.. have to figure out what they are using to program them, because you can easily lose that game by being slower, no matter how good you are at 'real' chess..

Yeah its NOT real chess. My friend Scott is pretty good. I thought it would not be possible to move pieces that fast but he does. Admitted the boy has too much time on his hands but thats a differenct story.

I have been playing chess for quite some time. I love speed chess. Specifically, one minute games (1,0).

IMO, the best learning tool is Chessmaster. Please understand that chess is not like most board games where there is a little skill and more a certain amount of luck to win (dominoes as an example). Chess is about acquiring a knowledge database of moves and strategies that can take years to develop.

Please realize that every time you lose, you haven't lost, you've learned what not to do. It's this learning of what not to do that eventually changes (as your knowledge database grows) into what to do to prevent a bad move.

Chess is not so much about who is better, as much as it is about who makes the first mistake. You can put two chessmasters at a table and someone HAS to lose (a draw/stalemate can be a lose depending on rules - both lose points from the overall score ranking).

If one has the personality of needing to learn how to win in a few days or weeks, then they will not stick with chess. Some people have spent their whole lives learning chess. The key is to enjoy the intricacies of a good game, not the win.

Yeah! That's part of why I liked it so much! It's neat to try so hard, but then something messes you up, and you think, "huh....well, I hadn't thought of that!!!"
