Yeah, Venezuela is ugly right now. A good friend of mine is a geologist specializing in Venezuela, so he goes there pretty regularly. They escort him, airport to airport, the whole time.

what do most people consider "well-traveled"?

Interesting question....
I think that while travel is always eye opening, it is easy to go somewhere and not experience it in any depth. There used to be discussions about 'tourist' vs 'traveller'....as if one would have a deeper experience than the other. I think going anyplace and having a chance to talk to the people living in that place is a learning experience, whether it is on the other side of the world or in the town down the road.

Personally, I need a frequent shaking up that I can only get by visiting a place totally different from where I live in Sarasota (mostly old white people). So anywhere with lots of young people (like the dz or a concert in Tampa!!)is a good start!!!

An example, we are planning on going to India next month. I was always curious about the place, but it seemed like a big hassle to travel there. But now a friend of mine is getting married there, and we will go there to join in on the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony. So rather than just 'float' through the sights, we will spend time with his family and experience a little of their life styles.

When we went to Spain and Portugal rather than just rent a car and drive around with a guide book (which we did for a month), at each town large or small, we also asked where the ceramics/pottery studios were, and visited them. We had a pottery studio at the time. So in each place, we could sit and talk about a subject in common and make friendships based on that commonality.

One of my favorite life experiences happened while we were living in Japan. I did a 1000 mile hike through Japan, through mountain paths, rice fields, along beaches....and stayed in small places like the local buddhist temples. I spoke no english for 2 months, and had lots of interesting conversations with people who had never met an american, or even a 'white guy'. It helps to speak the language of a country....so I always try to learn enough to have some kind of conversation....

Countries:
No America: Canada, USA, Mexico, Bahamas
So.America: Brasil, Uruguay, Peru, Boliva, Paraguay, Panama
Asia: Japan, HongKong/Macau, Thailand, Indonesia, Malyasia, Singapore
Europe: Scotland, Greece, Spain, Portugal,Turkey

next month: France and India

I've been to

U.K. (Wales and Grand Cayman also)
Mexico
Jamaica
Poland
Corsica
Thailand
Switzerland
Germany
Saudi Arabia
Qatar

I am originally from Louisiana.

I have no interest in returning to Saudi Arabia or Thailand. I loved Poland. It is underrated as a tourist destination. Warsaw was beautiful and I hear that Krakow is even better.

I am from Switzerland and besides my small country I have visited parts of :
france
italy
austria
germany
england
ireland
netherlands
spain
czech republic
hungary
russia
cyprus
turkey
morrocco
tunisia
south africa
mauritius
malaysia
thailand
cuba
USA
canada
french caribbean (yeah, I know, it's france again)

I'd go again in all of these countries. Some in places I already visited, some in other places of the country. The country I would have "less inclination to return" would be tunisia, due to the attitude of many people there. The country is beautiful (visited sets of Star Wars, incredible places in the desert etc), but didn't like the "tourist trap" places...

next country I am returning to is south africa, and that's in 2 days time :)
BTW there has been several threads identical to this one, but always a pleasure to answer...
