Spanked! (by my canopy)

Recommended Posts

Ok last weekend I had the hardest opening I've ever experienced or even seen and my friend Chopchop actually got it on video. He was practicing video-ing tandems and asked me to be the turkey. Here it is:

I had a nice run to the ER and nothings broken, just some whiplash and torn ligaments in my sternum... more to be revealed later...

I'm not getting a picture from that site, but I've seen the video. Without question the hardest opening I have ever, ever seen.

That was your Cobalt, right? You're supposed to open those things in a track.

I am so glad, and amazed, that you are OK.

OUCH! That's a rough one. Looks like the risers came out uneven. That always gives me a hard opening on the Stiletto.

get better soon

normally when you guys (friends of ChopChop - I met a handful last season - want to meet more) talk about 'spanking' I expect something else.:D

I usually open in a track. Roy was just practicing his opening shots for tandems so I opened in front of him. I'm sure it was my packjob though. I think the slider may have come down a little. I remember looking at Roy and saying "this is going to open really weird".

I couldn't believe how fast she got ripped out of the skydive.. I was like... "Holy shit.. Shannon..." as I was videoing her disappearing into the blue.. then I kept expecting to see her in freefall again.. I was not the least surprised when she landed, fell or sat down and did not get up but I was extremely relieved that she was sitting and talking to me when I got over there.. :)

Well, GFD noted above - "this is going to open weird"

After my last hard opening (I'm taking in line stows and note to a friend, "These risers look about 4 inches uneven. Well, it'll open anyway" - then smack!!) - I'm repacking now whenever I see that - these ellipticals are not nearly as forgiving as the old canopies.

Again, GFD, get well soon. I'm still trying to swing a company paid trip to San Jose and need more people to play with. I'll go ahead and let Iwan knee me in the chin again, but I'd rather not.

ChopChop - You still in Orlando occasionally? If so, PM the phone number. We'll call when we go to the tunnel end of this month.

Edit: Hookitt - I can't see the canopy in the picture, but at line stretch you are right that the left side is higher - for whatever reason. It's normal for the risers to stay even and not show uneven lines until stretch though. Ouch

I tie my three rings together when I pack and then undo them at the end. My lines are always pretty damn even. I'm sure it was the slider. You can see it's about half way down and the canopy is all the way open but open flat, not inflated at all.

Gah! It hurts to breathe.

holy crap!!!!! that was ridiculous. wow. sweetie, i hope you are okay. :(

I'm doing ok. It just feels like someone smacked me in the chest with a great big hammer really really hard and repeatedly.

I guess my chin cup hit my chest while my knee hit my face.

I'm starting that practice of tying off the risers. Just relating and commiserating here and pointing out a similar time when I knew the pack just 'wasn't right' and paid for it. I'm sorry it hurts. Stay tough.

Edit: Did you know that when a guy wears spandex under his rig (here in Minnesota it's another layer for warmth) it actually makes it easier for 'parts to shift and get under the leg strap? Feel happy to never have to sit on a nut on the ride down :$:PB|

ChopChop - apr 22-25 guess I'll just have to travel west instead some other time.

Wow girl! So glad you're okay! I got spanked HARD by my canopy when I had about 30 jumps. I was learning to pack so I think it was a combo of an experimental pack job and maybe still being in a track. Anyhow..... my back hurt like a BITCH! Apparently I did some serious damage to some nerves in my back cause the back of my legs turned BLACK & BLUE from the internal bleeding. I was still married at the time and was so scared my husband would see my legs and insist that I stop jumping. I avoided getting dressed in front of him and tried as hard as I could to walk without grimacing. Good news is there was no permanent damage. Again, glad you're okay!

That opening was on par and a little tame comparied to EVERY opening I've EVER had on a Cobalt.[:/]

That's too bad Dave. This was the first really hard opening I've ever had on this Cobalt. It usually opens up a little janky but very soft and slow. I only have about 80 jumps on it though.

Heck I got spanked more often by my Spectre than this Cobalt until this jump.

I'm going to keep jumping it but you can bet I'm going to be a lot more careful packing it.

Is the canopy ok too.. Mine blew all kinds of stuff 3 weeks ago and I had to chop it..

I was worried about that myself but looked at it when I came back to my senses and it looked fine. Vic packed it for me and went through it. It seemed ok. Thanks for the worry Jeanne ;)

B| I'm sorry to hear you're hurt, but glad you're not broken.
Get well soon, and let me know if I can do anything to cheer you up. :)

Thanks Jen, you're such a sweetheart! When do you leave? I'm supposed to be on the sidelines for about 6 to 8 weeks so I hope it's later then that so I can jump with you at least once.

All my openings are like butter on mine. (knocks on wood) I've had a couple with a slight turn but I think it's cause I lean in the harness one way some times. Sorry to hear about the hard opening GFD, hope you recover ok. Mine was on a Sabre 190 after I just learned how to pro pack and it was my first zero-p too. I had BIG ole bruises on my thighs.

I want to jump with you, Shannon! B| (It would have to be on our bellies...)

Right now, I expect to be around until late May, and I want to skydive as much as possible before I go.

Get well soon!! :)
