Duckwater 0 #1 March 16, 2004 I bought one of the 1st 20 GB iPods when they first came out. It lasted about 7 months then went dead. I have had it replaced under warranty 4 times now. I took the last 3 apart to see if I could see anything obvious. In all cases, it seems that the hard drive, made by Toshiba, had something rattling around in it. I treat my iPods fairly well but I believe the jarring from running and working out somehow damages the hard drive. The replacement ones were under warranty for a month and the last one lasted 5 weeks. I fianally gave up today and ordered a new iPod mini. I never quite filled the 20GB and the 4GB Mini will hold all of the stuff I listen to regulary. I opted for the $59 extended warranty, as I am afraid the mini will have problems too. Did anyone else have issues? Mike

Ian84 0 #3 March 17, 2004 Supposedly the battery dies after about 18 months and is not replaceable at the moment. For some reason they decided that ipod would be disposable. Its one of my favourite posessions but I still think that to be a shitty deal.
volo 0 #4 March 17, 2004 Sorry to hear of your problems with the ol'school iPods. I myself had one of the very first 5 GB iPod and I have to say that it was flawless. I ended up selling it to a buddy of mine and he's lovin' it now. I also owned the 20 GB iPod and it never gave me a problem. That one I also sold to a friend and then I treated myself to the new 40 GB iPod. So far no problems whatsoever. I think you might have just run into a batch of bad luck with buying the iPods. I hope you have better luck with the new Mini iPods.
quade 4 #5 March 17, 2004 I still own and use on a daily basis my original 5 gig iPod. Flawless performance. Still keeps a good charge.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
murrays 0 #6 March 17, 2004 QuoteThere's a class action suit in progress. I'm not sure of the specifics, but it had something to do with the short life spans of the earlier IPODS. it was regarding the battery life and the batteries being non-replaceable. Apple now has a battery replacement program for owners whose iPods are out of warranty which costs $99 plus shipping. My 20gb iPod works better now than when it was new. A couple of firmware upgrades fixed the issues I was experiencing. ltdiver 3 #7 March 17, 2004 Have the new 40GB iPod which goes with me everywhere. It's even used for my calendar, address book, and picture files I want to carry with me. I even use it to load music onto skydiving videos at the DZ. It's always worked as advertised. No issues to date. (haven't taken it up to altitude yet, though. ;^) ) ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Duckwater 0 #8 March 18, 2004 Well, I just talked to apple and I have a 4th 20GB iPod coming under warranty as well as my new mini. They told me I sounded like an honest guy (unless im talking to a girl) and that, even though it was technically out of warranty, they would replace it. I told them that they had just earned my lifelong business and word of mouth advertising. I went in and immediately ordered a new 17" Powerbook G4. I am going to make the switch to Mac finally. Im scared, going to Mac for the first time is like going down on a girl the first time. I heard it was good, but man, was it scary. murrays 0 #9 March 18, 2004 Apple tops the PC World Service and Reliability surveys for a reason! As a switcher in his 5th year I am sure you will be happy with your purchase. It takes a little while to get used to how things are done and where they are located on a Mac. But, after about a week I'm sure you'll be right at home. I have a G4 iBook at work. It's a great little machine. I run my tax and accounting apps in Windows using Virtual PC and use the Mac OS for everything else...Excel, Word, e-mail and web-surfing. It's very well integrated....I can drag and drop files between the Windows desktop and the Mac desktop and I print to our network printer using both OS's without a hitch. I periodically hook up my Windows laptop to the network as well and it is quite easy to share files with the Macs. At home, I use my iMac for DV, digital photos, music and everything else. Enjoy that new machine! PM me if you need help with anything on it.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
