Overall don't like the soundtrack, but that one song in We Were Soldiers stirs the blood.

Das Boot has an exceptional soundtrack.

Saving Private Ryan is well done except for one or two spots. I like that I can't remember anything specific about it. It helped the movie without getting int he way.

Platoon uses Barber's Adaggio for strings which is one of my favourite chill out choonz.
Nice juxtaposition of images and sounds.

I van't listen to The End, or The Ride Of the Valkyries (the tune when they napalm the beach village), without thinking of those scenes...B|

I can't belive that there is only one mention of the use of Barbers Adagio for Strings in Platoon - that is one of the best movie scenes of all time IMHO.

That said I also used to love the intro to 'Tour of Duty' with the Rolling Stones 'Paint it black' playing over the top - that was cool!B|

"The Ride of the Valkyries" always gets me, and "Brothers in Arms" in the helo scene from Spy Games (I know it's not a war movie, but it is the end of a war scene) is a great one also.

Quade's nailed it, "Das Boot" is tops, but the opening track for "Cross of Iron" can't be beat for the juxtaposition of music and imagery in a war film. As the titles are presented, archival war footage is shown, and a German children's song, "Hanschen Klein" is sung between segues to the onerous, dark main theme, and freeze-frames and cuts to characters in the film.

It's shocking in its elegant simplicity, and should be required viewing for film-school students, IMHO.

BTW, if you want to see a REAL war movie, take a look at "Stalingrad" if you can stand it (it's the film version of the novel by Theodor Pliever, who wrote the book based on interviews he had with German survivors).

A noteworthy anectdote concerning Stalingrad (which in my opinion was the most brutal battle in the history of Mankind) are General Charles de Gaulle's remarks while visiting the ruins of Stalingrad in November 1944 on his way to Moscow for a meeting with Stalin.
--------------
After viewing the sheer amount of destruction he is said to have commented, "Still, all in all a very great people, a very formidable people." When his Russian guide thanked him for the compliment, de Gaulle responded, "No sir, I speak not of the Russians but of the Germans..to have come this far."
------------
I was emotionally drained after watching that picture. The only thing that comes close is "Saving Private Ryan".

BTW - Just like "Das Boot", you have to watch it in German with English subtitles to get the full effect.

Is Stripes a "war" movie, if so then I vote for that.B|

Wow, freak me out! I was JUST gonna say that I favor the theme from "Stripes" -- it's so catchy -- and what do I find but the very last post before mine finally brought it up! That's a funky coincidence.

I also like the scene in "Full Metal Jacket" where they are clearing some urban area while singing the Mickey Mouse Club theme song. It's a funny take on a cadence song.

Defo - but watch it in the original German Language version not the dubbed English version. The dubbed one losses about 80% of the emotion because they didn't put in the right feeling into a lot of the dialogue. Its difficult to describe, but trust me as one who has both versions... the dubbed one sucks ass with a straw.
