freebirdtif 0 #1 April 7, 2008 I have had line twist here and usually they stop and the canopy will untwist as fast as it twisted. I had to kick alot one time and another I had a streamer with line twist so I cut that away. I am stable when I pull. I know this that is not an issue still I sometimes look up right after pull time and see a perfect opening canopy no twist then as the slider comes down the lines twist. If I immediately hold onto the risers can that help? I jump two different sizes 170 was my chop, I had the twist last time on a 175. I'm downsizing to a 150-135 this summer. I weigh about 110. Anyway I know line twist are a fairly mild thing but not always . Is there a way to avoid then besides being stable when I pull if thats not it what else can it be packing, wind ? I figure if I grab the lines above the risers just on opening can this held avoid line twist?-
2cmyzx 0 #2 April 7, 2008 Tiff, are you packing your own canopy?
jverley 1 #3 April 7, 2008 Check that your canopy is in trim. Canopies with Spectra line will go out of trim over time. It is caused by the outboard lines shrinking due to friction with the slider. Ask a rigger to check it or do this simple check yourself: Tie the tops of your risers together and walk your lines up as if you are to pro-pack. Check how the attachment tabs line up for your "A" lines (the ones attached to the nose). If they are straight across (left to right) like this: ||||||||| then your canopy in in trim. If they are longer in the center, in a "V shape then your canopy is in need of a reline. See your rigger to get a reline.John Arizona Hiking Trails

The lines aren't all the same length on a spectre 135, the canopy in the profile. They shouldn't line up. But they should be symetrical from side to side.I'm old for my age. You will find that as canopy size is reduced and wing loading goes up, you body position in the harness during opening will become more of a factor. If during the snivel phase of the opening you tend to have more weight on one leg strap (or the leg straps are not evenly adjusted), the canopy can twist up on opening. A couple of things can cause line twist beside body position. I would start checking on the stows. You will feel if you opening was usual or something else. I got a bunch of line twists, all of them were "ready" when I looked up. Most of the cases my canopy was flying in level and not diving. I guess you still fly a square or lightly tapered wing. Do not worry too much, you canopy can sense that and it would twist itself....
freebirdtif 0 #8 April 7, 2008 I am having to rent for two more months. I am jumping a 175 Falcon I think . I know I should know that. Anyway I had a 135 Sabre 2 all new complete system My Ex stole my rig and sold it when he got mad one day. He's a WUFFO too! I will get enough money to buy a new complete system in a month or so. So I will end up with a custom Odyssey. So its all good. Anyway. I find that when canopies open slow they have a tendency to twist. My canopy opened perfect last jump I did when I looked up but as the slider came down a little, the lines started to twist, it did twist and I kicked out. No big deal but I would like to avoid it if I can. I guess I can have my packer pack for me with rental gear. I am paying for it for the day. I will let someone I know pack it next time. He is a great packer. I am still learning. I am focused on being safe in freefall and accuracy for now. I hate to have to rent but I do not want to wait 2 months to jump. I need to keep practiceing.-
AnKaLi 0 #9 April 7, 2008 I'm no expert, but when I was flying a lightly loaded canopy I had issues with line twists, I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.
freebirdtif 0 #10 April 8, 2008 I was thinking the same thing. Maybe I'll pack on some weights. Thanx-
kevinsa 0 #11 April 8, 2008 I've only done 3 jumps and have had two line twists which took a good few kicks to get out of.
popsjumper 2 #12 April 9, 2008 You keep mentioning (in paraphrase) "when I look up, then it twists"...do you see a correlation there? Shoulders parallel to the horizon? Weight evenly distributed? My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus.
