Ahh yes, damned Christian terrorsts..:(

It was mentioned in the "Invasion of Zimbabwe" thread when someone said there were no real christian terrorists, until others pointed out the IRA, Lebanon, and the ETA...

And they are protesting what exactly? What is wrong with Spain that requires terrorist measures? They want Mexico back as a colony?

read up on it. I'm sure CNN will have detailed info on them by now.

I'm surprised they are not more known then that in the US with the war on terrorism BS... ETA is, along with the IRA probably one of the most active terrorism group in the world....[:/]

Who the fuck is the ETA? The Extra Terrestrial Assholes? I can't keep my radical crazies straight anymore. Perhaps they should all be identified with toe tags?

It's a Basque separatist movement (Euskadi Ta Atasuna, Euskadi means Basque/ish, not sure about the other two)
It's, imo, a fucked up situation; you have a small group of people, who, by their language and genetic material, are completely different from everyone else in Europe, but don't have their own country (in fact, some of them live in France and most in Spain). Small wonder that a terrorist movement demanding a land of their own gets enough supporters to pull off shit like this.:(

and as there are only 2 "rich" regions in Spain, the 2 regions who work for the rest of the country, there are separatists...
These 2 regions are Catalunya and Basque country.
This is very schematised
Would not want to offend people from other regions.

Sorry I am not laughing with your witty remark. Had i not fallen asleep this morning i would have been in Atocha´s train station when the bombs went off.

There was over 9 bombs overall in three trains. 6 of them blew up in 4 wagons and the other 3 were defuse by the TEDAX. We don´t know yet how many there were exactly for they are still looking for more.
So far there has been 173 casualties and over 900 wounded, 15 of them kids in critical condition.

Luckily i wasn´t in the train station at that time because i fell asleep. I usually get that train every morning at that time (7:45). A workmate was not that lucky though. She died this morning. She was pregnant.

I am glad you are alive and my heart felt condolences to anyone who suffers from the acts of such sub-humans.

My remarks were not intended to mock such a tragic day. I only fail to understand what any terrorist group hopes to accomplish by these acts, and what reasons could motivate anyone to kill innocents.

I apologize if I have offended you.

However, according to the ETA leader, they had nothing to do with it and are not claiming responsibility.

Typically terrorists groups claim responsibility so their "cause" can be heard

I heard that as well. The thing is that 1 month ago the police caught them red handed with a pickup and 500 Kg of explosives and this x-mas they tried to blow up another train station. Besides Arnaldo Otegui (the guy who sais ETA didn´t do it) is best buddy with ETA and he is in the vasque government, so he really cannt say anything else if he wants to keep his job.

I believe that most of ETA's attacks took place under General Franco and his fascist regime, does anyone know how long he was in power for?
they are also active in i think Brittany in France.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

My sister is currently spending the semester in Madrid. She called this morning to say that she was ok, and the only description she could come up with at that moment for the events was, "surreal". I guess if no group is claiming responisbility, it's hard to know whether or not further violence should be expected. I'm supposed to be leaving this Wednesday to visit her, now I just want her to come home.

My thoughts and prayers to everyone there [:/]

ETA started with Francos´ dictatorship. At that time everybody saw ETA with a bit of simpathy because the basque country was quite opressed (well, as everybody) and they ONLY attacked military people (who kept Franco in charge).
When Franco died in 1975 ETA decided that they wanted to be independent of Spain along with the region of Navarra (spain) and south of France (who by the way don´t want the independence). They progresively changed their methos and instead of attacking high ranked militar decided to kill indiscrimately with bombs. ETA has been killing since 1970, aproximately. and overall there has been over 1200 casualties for their terrorist attacks.

Franco ruled Spain from '39 to his death in '75. He was probably a contributing factor to ETA being founded, but I don't think they became any less active when he died.

That's what I heard on the BBC this morning too, but the authorities are reporting that several earlier attacks exactly like this (the latest was over Christmas, IIRC) were thwarted, and that ETA's fingerprints are all over this one, despite some trying to pin it on Al-Qaeda.
