one that doesn't close up on the wrist!!!

over hand knots and anything else like tying a shoe is a no-no.

a good old fashioned square knot works wonders, I'm told.

ah piss off. last time I was in a ropes course, none of the instructors could get a wet knot to stick, so I suggested letting me have a go at it. I made a square knot, and they had your reaciton.

You know what?

IT FUCKIN STUCK!

As far as I can tell you really only need to know about ten knots to deal with all sorts of situations.

Bowline (double or triple) - good for a rope around a fixed point.

Figure-8 - for a strong termination at an anchor.

Overhand loop - quicker than a figure-8, not as strong.

Overhand bend - to join two pieces of webbing.

Fishermen's knot and sheet bend - to join two ropes.

Prusik - to ascend ropes in an emergency.

Munter hitch - to descend ropes in an emergency.

Lark's head - to very quickly terminate a line (useful in rigging.)

Clove hitch - for adjustable anchors in ropes.

Square knot - not really that useful but it's the only one most people know.

The question is - is this really thread drift or not?

depends on what you plan on using the knots for... :P

I went through the boyscouts and my grandpa was a nautical man, so I know what you're saying and agree wholeheartedly.

However, it's scary to realize how many people couldn't tie a boat line to a cleat without asking how.

I'm impressed Bill. But most of my experience is in restraining the unwilling. Pain compliance to a figure 4 leg lock. Application of both handcuffs and legirons. I also used the zip strip velcro leg restraint, and I guess that would leave less bruising.

If I ever had to chase them down and subdue them, I got those skills. But mostly, as a Camera Flier, I have to beat them to arm's length.

Us Camera Fliers, Like me and Quade, are just that cool.

That sounds like it might not be that much fun for the other person - as an aquaintance of mine once said, once you find someone willing to let you that that stuff to em, you don't want to piss them off.

good tips..

My favorite rope is a red one.. belts work too and no knots to worry about .. can actually be buckled nice and tight around the wrists. The ropes work better for the ankles though what with tying to the bedposts and all.
