My father emailed me back this morning. Let me know the website was approved and to start on the next one. At the bottom all he said was "...we'll address school seperatly" I about shit myself then I just got an email addressing the school issue from him and it turned out a bit better than I expected. all these years and times I guess I've been scared of my father because of the power he has to make and break people so easily. He didn't talk to my sister for years after she got married (yes different situation but it still scared me) Below is the response and I'm happy to say, Today is the first day of theh NEW rest of my life! Quotechristopher; first of all we aren't expecting you to do anything you don't want to do. that's not the issue. the issue is to get busy and do whatever you feel is going to provide you with a reasonable living and do it very well and get on with it. I don't want you wasting your time and my money fooling around doing something unproductive. I really don't care if you want to be in business, in fact I think you should take a heavier mix of MIS stuff and to move to a better school where you would have more options. that said, i suggest strongly that you spend less time jumping out of planes and more time concentrating on getting yourself gainfully employed.(of course lol) play time is about over from our point of view and we(you) need to see some result. you have the brains and ability to do whatever you want to do - you have to decide what is worthwhile and isn't - not me. I can give you lots of advise, but you have to take it or not. just remember the same applies to you as to alycia. I love you both dearly, but i'm not here to manage your lives and make up for your bad decisions (obviously I will help where ever its reasonable or ultimately necessary). So, yes I think getting financial aid would be a could experience and perhaps help to adjust the priorities for you. Finally, I'm not disappointed that you aren't interested in business per sse, however regardless of whether you want to do web design or be part of an MIS group etc. the general business background will never hurt. Actually, I would suggest getting whatever credits you need for this undergrad degree asap and then look at getting an mba perhaps specialicizing in MIS. OR look for a job in an MiS function with a company that allows you to work with the pc's and websites etc. OR simply look for a job in a company to do web design etc. and take classes at night in graphics, programming etc to augment your education. there are lots of options. from my point of view the main thing is to not waste a lot more time in school trying to get an undergrad degree. this is merely a starting point to say that you had the ability to something more than flip burgers. the educational process starts now, with your first job. I have a good head hunter that worked with me and some other people i know who could help you if you want. If you want the name I 'll get it for you. bottom line is that YOU have to start to take the initiative to get yourself out of poverty - not me. It will take hard work and some perseverance to write letters and do resumes etc. to get the first position, but after that you can make out of it what you want. sitting in school churning up debt and getting nowhare isn't my recommendation. However, you have to make the decision and get busy. sitting in school unhappy not making a decision or talking to me and neusa about it is more disappointing that saying your not interested in business. who cares? what's important is to find the hot button and get on with it. life is short - don't waste it. also, speaking of life, you need to watch your weight and watch the alcohol consumption. I know its college and seems fun to be able to drink and throw down a beer at meals etc. you just have to be very careful about this as a habit now when your young and watch your weight. you have your mother's genes in this respect and if you have too much tonnage when your 22 you can do the math for when you are 50. so i suggest getting into some physical activity routine - golf, tennis, walking, something and getting your diet in line with your long term health needs. Remember, someday you will have a family that depends on your life to take care of them, so do your future children a favor and avoid the heart attack now. so the point of this is lecture is - GET MOVING!!!! Not making decisions disappoints me. 50% of the time you will be wrong, its the corrections that are important and how fast the corrections are made. love dad Holly shit MIS here I come!!! I will say, the best thing I ever did for my relationship with my parents was to leave school for a year and finance the rest of it myself. Put myself through the last two years of private school. No objections to my choice of major, my choice of job, my choice of living accomodations -- they were my responsibility and my issue. They were always there for me, but when I was really self-reliant, they also treated me like an adult. Nightingale 0 #9 March 9, 2004 looks like your dad gave you some good advice. an undergrad degree really is just a starting point. just finish it as quickly as possible with whatever major, and work on the computer stuff after. remember... you'll have more money for skydiving if you have a well-paying, full time job. right now, I go to school at night, work during the day, and jump on the weekends. because of my degree, I make $15,000 more than someone in my same position without a degree. just something to think about. Hey Chris, I agree with that! Finish the undergrad like he says, get it out of the way, and move here and do your MBA/MIS from USF like I did. USF even paid my way because they hired me as a Research Grad Assistant, so I could learn on the job! I could steer you to the profs that could set that up. You could get the MIS degree in 3 semesters...taking MBA classes as part of that. Doing a double degree with full MBA would take longer.... This letter seems that MIS is your choice. There is a big difference. If you pursue MIS, you will have business, marketing, and strategy courses, along with programming, networking, and analysis courses. My MIS degree is actually a Bachelors of Business Administration in MIS. CS is lots of math and lots of programming, very little business. Totally different degree.. totally different job paths. In many ways (in fact, the whole email) he reminds me of my own father. Supportive, loving, articulate, intelligent, generous with everything, especially his wisdom and experience. I like his candor, too. If I could shave 10 years off my own life expectancy just to add 10 to his so he can stick around for more of my life, I would do it. You are very lucky, as I am myself.
