slug 1 #16 March 9, 2004 We saw a commercial jet do a wide turn at Cam Rahn Bay the shoulder had a very thin top coat of asphalt with sand underneath. One side of the main landing gear hit the shoulder and punched righ thru the jet engine were very close to the runway. The pilot ried to put the pedel to the medal 4 engine . NO go got a tug pulling and engibe running still no go. Pilot was not happy. They finally did it the hard way unloaded the plane (cargo) dug a gradual slope from the tires to the concrete runway and laid down steel runway mat in the sand. With the jets screaming and the tug pulling The plane made it back on the runway. Pilot was very See the shovel in the photo someone's going to do some digging and maybe get some 2x12's or plywood to build a ramp on the wet side, Just a guess. BTW not a pilot. old fart R.I.P. JohnRich 4 #25 March 9, 2004 QuoteI'm looking at the pic's and figuring out the best way to get out....do you have extraction pic's? They shoveled the mud out from in front of the tire, creating a shallow uphill slope. Then shoved a wide board in front of the tire, so that the wheel could be dragged up the board. And finally hooked a tractor up to the tow bar, attached to the nose gear, and pulled it out. The only real concern was if the board would flip upward out in front and whack the prop, so someone walked the prop holding the blades out of the way. Then it was back to the hanger to wash the mud off the brakes, and after a brief inspection, it was back in the air. Total down time was maybe 45 minutes.
