I've just done about the hardest thing I've had to do in my life :(

Recommended Posts

I've just let down my father in light of fufilling my dreams in life and have changed my major from Marketing to computer science... My father has always pushed me to go into business like himself and has built a very sucessful business in Brazil. Harty Cosmeticos has been a family business from day one, even the name is related to the family. He is the last business of his kind in Brazil and had one day dreamed of having his only son work by his side. I haven't gotten a response from him yet but my stomache hasn't stopped turning since I clicked send. In some ways, I wish I could unsend the email but I had to because he has been putting so much pressure on me to graduate.

The results probably won't be pretty. He didn't talk to my sister for almost 2 years after she got married without telling him and I'm sure he's going to feel as if I'm a failure too. Come next month I probably will be working more to pay off my tuition and rent bills. I feel like shit because I feel I've let down a very important person in my life, someone who I respect and admire. I feel though that I should follow my heart and make my own decissions, learn the hard way and do what I think will make me happy in life.

I think I'm going to throw up, I'm dredding the phone call/email I'm going to get here soon I'm sure:(. Wish me luck everyone, I'm sure I'm going to need the vibes.

(((((((((((((((((((((VIBES)))))))))))))))))))) to you. I seriously hope, though, that your father can see that this is what you want to do, and understand. But some people just aren't that way. I hope it all works out for you, though. Be strong. :)

Sounds like some air time is needed and I hear the weather in Manhappening is great this week.
Jump

Haven't checked the weather for the weekend. I'll be out there regardless of the weather teaching a class. All I know is that I couldn't find a pilot for today when it was 70,light winds and work let me off at noon:( Yeah I need to jump though...Nothing like busting a sweet head-dowb followed by a sunset swoop crosswind over the peas. Ahhhh

You can't live your entire life doing what others want. Even if he is your Dad. He may be mad now but when you are successful at other things he may calm down. It just may take 8 or 10 years. :D Don't worry....During most of my late teens and 20's my parents were convinced I'd end up in the gutter or the penitentiary. Look at me now!! B|

No vibes....sounds like you have done what you feel is right. One cannot live there life for another...you must do what you want to do.

Only you will know what is right for you.....and its not like your taking up basket weaving as a major;):P

and Oh yeah.......I had a friend that was being "groomed" to take over his family's multi-national corporation. He went to broadcasting school and eventually joined the Army. I figured at least that might teach him what he DIDN'T want to do. I never understood why he had such resistance to letting his Dad give him everything on a silver platter. *Shrug* I guess you just have to feel like you are making your own way in life sometimes. I've done most everything without family's help. I wish I hadn't been so stubborn sometimes. :S

Any reason you couldn't carry a dual major in Marketing and Computer Science? One compliments the other greatly and as technology continues, the two will merge closer and closer.

no, no reason I couldn't other than the reason I won't be graduating this May as he wants me to. I won't graduate this May regardless of which major I'm in, which is part of the reason he's going to be pissed

Or dropping out of school to become a "Professional Skydiver." :D

Although becoming a fulltime vidiot/tandem master has come across my mind more than once. I did the math, wouldn't work out around here.

I'm sorry about what you are going through! [:/] ... but I believe we do have to follow our hearts. I believe you did the right thing. I had to make many of these same kind of decisions in my life also. I'm sure that doesn't mean anything, but I believe you did the right thing. ;) ... good luck to you kansas! ;)

Yup, hang in there Kansas...I was in the same boat...dad wanted me to major in what he wanted so he could pass the business on to me...but it wasn't where my heart was!! He didn't get mean or ugly about it, but I felt like I let him down the same as you...[:/]

Turned out for the best! A job ain't everything, man...I'm starting a new thread about that...:D:S:P

I hope your Dad realizes that you have to do what makes you happy and not live a life for someone else. Many vibes to you.

from what i know about your relationship w/ your father, it was a mighty tough decision for you. i am proud of you for following your heart and not being dragged by what another wants you to do. it takes a lot of guts to stand up and go your own way.

hopefully he'll understand and come to the realization that you are not him, that you are an individual who has different dreams than his own.

I just learned something very interesting...

There is this thing called the MSEP (Midwest Student Exchange Program). The program allows sutdents from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Michigan and Minesotta to transfer between school and not have to pay out of state tution. This really opens up my options for getting out of here.

I'd actually be paying less to go to some schools than their own in state students would be. Now, MIS or computer science? I kinda like MIS a bit better but like some parts of computer science too

Been there, done that. You'll feel better after awhile, and so will your dad. I got a chem degree, planning on following in daddy's footsteps as a doctor, and decided directly after graduation that I wanted to work with computers. I'm now finishing my masters in MIS this spring and have been working in IT for a few years now. Life goes on. Hang in there;) You've gotta do what makes you happy.
