Brian425 0 #1 March 8, 2004 So Sunday I went to help a friend work on his house. He says that we'll start on the roof to patch a section in preparation of the rain today. So going up the ladder, I am very slow. Get to the top and I want to walk on all fours. The roof is fairly steep, He described it as 12/6 I believe a 6 inch drop over 12 inches. The roof is not terribly high, 3 stories. I just was very uncomfortable. I did not hearthe end of it. I think I need to take them all for a tandem. The only time you should look down on someone is when you are offering them your hand.
Stacy 0 #2 March 8, 2004 I'm afraid of heights and climbing ladders, etc etc. If I'm climbing something and can see how high I am, forget it. I've found that with jumping, the height is so surreal looking that it doesn't bother me. I still won't climb ladders or staircases that I can see through the slats of the steps without feeling like I'll pas out though. __

Brian425 0 #6 March 8, 2004 The challenge for them to do a tandem is there. I've always admitted I was a little uncomfortble with heights. I guess from 25-1000 feet I am not comfortable. After that I'm ok. The only time you should look down on someone is when you are offering them your hand.
flyangel2 2 #7 March 8, 2004 Don't worry, I get teased by friends that don't skydive when they find out I'm scared of heights. The problem for me is that I can see the ground and I know that if I fall, it's going to hurt like hell. Ladders? I stay away from them.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. DJatLarge 0 #10 March 8, 2004 I think you nailed it. We are all afraid of the ground. When I was in high school, I fell off the roof of my parents house after the ladder collapsed under me. Since then, I avoid ladders if I can. I've bungee jumped and that was ok, but those last few feet really freak me out!

Tink1717 2 #14 March 8, 2004 Actually, skydiving has enhanced my fear of heights. I work in the Fire Dept. and have to deal with high places all the time. Since becoming a skydiver, I am much more aware of how a fall from a seemingly low height can be deadly. Now when I work on the roof of a three story garden apartment, or the steep pitch of a barn or other steep roof, I am much more cautious than I was before I started jumping.Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. MyOwnWay 0 #16 March 8, 2004 i am really afraid of heights. . . i was even scared on the balloon jump. . it was just too close to the ground for me. i was shaking, knees getting all weak, and nervous as hell. i can't even get near the edge of a roof, cliff, balloon etc. unless i am jumping off into water or have a rig on. so just call me a wuss. . . i'll own up to it. _________________________________________ all good things are wild and free - Henry David Thoreau
aykay 0 #17 March 8, 2004 Maybe because at 14,000 the ground doesn't look like ground. You can make out land marks (like the DZ) but not features that we see everyday just walking around. As you get lower (under canopy) you can make out more and realise just what you might be running in to.
jkm2500 0 #18 March 8, 2004 Dude, I am afraid of heights. I hate the first 1000 feet up in the airplane. I don't like being on a tall building, the world starts spinning. I would rather be in an airplane a 13,500 ft. I hate extension ladders even worse than heights. I have a sincere respect for them. I would hate to be 10 feet off the ground to fall flat on my back. boxingrrl 0 #19 March 8, 2004 You're in good company-- my husband got his nickname-- Treeboy-- because he couldn't climb a tree to retrieve a cutaway. He just hit 3000 jumps-- but when we were taking a tree out of our yard, I was the one shimmying the ladder to tie it off. He's a helluva skydiver, and a both feet on the ground kind of guy. Lee03 0 #22 March 9, 2004 Believe it has allot to do with depth perception. I understand that you loose your depth perception at about 35 ft. Go higher, and you don't feel the height, this is why the surrealistic feeling at 14,500. Like being on a mountain top, you don't really feel the sensation of height. Nearer the ground, your perception of depth is greater, so your are more aware of the "height" and the natural fear of heights kicks in. This would seem to make sense.-------- To put your life in danger from time to time ... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities. --Nevil Shute, Slide Rule
