Ever laugh at something that is not supposed to be funny?

Recommended Posts

A couple of years ago, my best friend told me that his wife (at the time) got upset with him at a movie. They went to see American Beauty, and he spent much of the movie laughing because he identified so much with Kevin Spacey's character. His wife did not think the movie was funny, nor was she entertained by her husband's thoughts on the film. He still laughs about that movie.

While driving back from Los Angeles, my lady thought about trying a book on tape. So she selected "King of Torts." I thought, "Heck. WHy not? Could be interesting.

About an hour into it, I was laughing - riveted by the tales of his move into big league mass tort law. From my time as an attorney in LA, when I was in with some of the mass tort crowd, I actually recognized the people mentioned. The skills, the system, the way it works, and the big money. The Ambush. The ads. The up front costs. The competition for clients. Etc. I was actually looking back at who and what I knew, and laughed, since the Grisham pinned those dudes to a tee!

So I found myself laughing the whole time because I was intimately familiar with it. Like my friend, I found a very serious situation funny. My lady didn't think it funny. She thought it interesting but disgusting. My disgust goes way back with it. One reason I won't do it.

There are other things I find funny that aren't supposed to be. Tom Cruise in court in "A Few Good Men" is a laugh riot to attorneys. Point Break. Effing hilarious. ER? Funny to us who worked in medicine.

Malcolm in the Middle? Hilarious because I've been in most of those situations.

God. I feel like a real ghoul for laughing at "The King of Torts." I know it wasn't supposed to be a comedy, but I cannot help it. I know too much.[:/]

I listened to that book when it first came out - great novel - great because it was realistic -(In my underinformed opinion)

I have always wondered how real it really is.

Say - Can i go beat up a Mass Tort litigator now?
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

I just read about PhillyKev's jail time and kinda laughed.....alot. The situation really sucked for him, and I feel bad for him, but the way he told the story was quite funny.

Am I going to hell for this?

That was about as real of a depiction as I have heard. Right down to the steering committee. And, I'm only through tape 2 of four.

I'd advise against it. :D

Movies are good examples -

In college (a long time ago) a buddy and I went to (I think it was called) Continental Divide (John Belushi film).

It was a serious movie, but every single thing Belushi did reminded me of something from Animal House, or SNL, Blues Brothers, or whatever. I was howling the entire time.

There were a couple of old people behind me with very confused looks on their faces. I doubt they ever saw any of his other work.

Years ago, the original "Dawn of The Dead" movie.

I was particularly fond of the idiot who just couldn't resist stopping and getting his BP checked at that little machine while the zombies were running loose. It was incredibly funny when he got killed and only his arm was left in the machine (which showed no BP, obviously).

Now the Evil Dead series was supposed to be funny and was.

And the Police Academy series was supposed to be funny and wasn't - Homer,"You didn't see anyone laughing now, DID YOU?"

I got you all beat here.

I Toledo Ohio the Main public library has a nice garden surrounded by a single strand cable fence. The strand is just about forehead level to an average 6 or 7 year old boy. My family and I decide to walk around Downtown and we leave via the front door and my younger daughter and I go running around like idiots up the sidewalk. My son chases after us but decides to cut through the garden never seeing the cable fence.

Well, obviously, he clotheslines himself and (damn, I still think it is funny, I can't type I am laughing so hard) I'll be damned forever if it did not look like something straight from a Tom and Jerry cartoon. His feet flew up higher than his head is even now 3 years later. He hit the ground with a thud and started crying, I ran to him (having just turned to see him hit it) and got him up, checked to see if he was alright and then as he went to get a hug from his mommy I burst out laughing with my daughters. Could not help it. Laughed my ass off after I was sure he was okay.:D

Got another one, but will save it for later.

LOL I remember that exact scene. I also loved the blue light and the "attention k-mart shoppers..." while these guys are bumping into the plexiglass walls. :D

I find morbid things funny. Like, the other night a bunch of us from the DZ were playing Scattergories.

The letter was "S." The category was, "Things that jump/bounce."

Almost everyone answered: SKYDIVERS.

We're all going to hell. But man, was that ever hilarious.

ROTFLMAO...that is halarious...but then i LOVE black humor....

Then you'll love the fact that I'm always planning what everyone should do on my memorial jump.

Here's how it goes:
First everyone has to flop around and try to get into a sit.
Hold a decent sit for a few seconds, then has to spin around on their backs.
Repeat.
Deploy just a little bit too low.
For the big finale, flare too low and slide in on your knees. On the runway.

Oh, and maybe secretly pass a little gas on the plane ride up -- and blame it on someone else. :$

Hell of a memorial, huh?

Yes. Quite often in fact. :P
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Use to, allot as a kid. After getting my ass beat several times, I learned not to laugh at things that aren't funny!

I'm a computer geek. A lot of the geek jokes are pretty accurate, most of them have to do with being naive or boring. I tend to laugh at them because they are funny. However, lawyer jokes can be pretty spiteful. Since you're a lawyer, I always wanted to know if lawyers laugh them off.
