DShiznit 0 #8 March 5, 2004 Not long at all, as I used to ride an RM 80 for a while as well. I think a great beginner bike nowadays is the SV650. It's still a streetable nice bike with a GREAT resale value and very forgiving.

Gawain 0 #13 March 5, 2004 If you want to start on a streetbike, buy used, and keep the displacement under 650cc. Just about anything will light your fire... My first streetbike was a Suzuki Katana 600. I finished on a GSX-R600. I liked my friends' 750s, 900s, and 1000s, but I loved the wail and shift action of the smaller engines...plus, in the twisties, the lower weight creates heaven-on-earth IMO... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Gawain 0 #20 March 5, 2004 QuoteOpinions on the Suzuki GS500F and the Kawasaki Ninja 500R Honestly? They're fine bikes, but if you intend on doing any kind of sport riding (tearing up the Ortega, etc.), then I recommend looking at something closer to the Suzuki SV650S. Better power, just as easy to ride, and you won't outgrow it as quickly. Regardless of what you choose, if this is your first streetbike, trust me, buy used. Fortunately, SoCal has a ton of bikes...like a kid in a candy store. Just my opinion. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! sdgregory 0 #21 March 5, 2004 Honda Rebel 250 back in 89. Now I won't ride anything less than 1000 unless it is the new CBR600RR.
PeteW 0 #22 March 5, 2004 Had a Yamaha 125 Ednuro when I was 14, then a 1975 KTM 250 at 16. Last year I rode a 2001 Suzuki Maurader 800cc. Liked it at first but quicky out grew it. That was my first steetbike. In Dec I bought a 2002 Yamaha Vstar 1100 Custom. Looks great but because of the snow its still got 1km on the odo!

Aviatrr 0 #24 March 5, 2004 My first street bike was an '84 Honda VFR700F2. Next bike was an '89 Honda Hurricane 1000. Since then I've had a Katana 600, FJ1200, and GSX-R750. Mike
Deuce 1 #25 March 5, 2004 I had a minibike with a centrifugal clutch (dingdadingdingding!) A Yamaha DT 175 enduro, a Katana 1100 (riding that beast home I thought I was going to die, had it for 10 years, loved it) now have a BMW K1200RS. Either of those bikes you picked out is fine, but get yourself a nice unmodified used bike in the same class. I can't decide if I love or hate the new Suzuki "photon torpedo" headlights.
