dterrick 0 #28 March 3, 2004 ...sounds like full retail to me. Another option is a complete used engine out of a wreck. Sure there are some potential unknowns but if you can live with a bit of down-time and have ANY mechanically inclined friends I see some savings. PLUS, you then have a "spare" that you can sell as is. At 75k mi, a veedub is just wearing in. Dave PS: The 18 hun seems ot have been counted twice. Everything else looks about right. For a comparison, I blew a belt on my honda Civic Si and I did the whole job myself. Parts and machining - 600 bucks. Other associated stuff (beer, shop shpplies) another couple hun. Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
Misslmperfect 0 #29 March 3, 2004 is what happened to my car the norm when a belt blows? or "jumps" as sergio, master of volkswagen said. are you saying that you had the same repairs as i, and did them for a lil over 6 hundred? how much can i pay you to fly here and fix my car? lmao....i have some car savvy friends...but im getting the idea that theres more that needs to be replaced than just engine parts...am i wrong here? melOh Canada, merci pour la livraison! SkydiveNFlorida 0 #30 March 3, 2004 Don't do it!! You're a chick! Chicks ALWAYS get ripped off! And, if you're towing your car in somewhere, you can expect to really get ripped off. Tow your car to someones driveway while you check prices. Also, how do they know what damage was done to the engine? Have they opened it up? I refuse to let anyone do any serious work on my car until my brother okays it. I always call him with the estimate, and what they're doing, and usually I can get back to the dealer as a much more knowledgable customer, and knock some costs down. And, if I have ANY suspicion at all that they intend to rip me off. I just go elsewhere. I wouldn't trust anyone who wouldn't give me a couple/few days to figure out if I want the work done. It's different if your car is there for a tire change, and you wanna check prices to knock 25$ off. But, we're talking a serious repair where they stand to make $$ on and they don't even want to hold your car while you decide? Sounds pretty sleezy to me! RUN! Good luck, girl! That really sux! I always thought timing belts were to be replaced at 60k? I guess it's diff w/diff cars, though. duh. Angela.
dterrick 0 #31 March 3, 2004 Heya Mel, I had a VW GTi before the Civic. Veedub parts may as well be Porsche parts for what the dealer wants for them. What happened to you IS typical if the belt skips/breaks but for eighteen hun I'd expect a brand new head and your old one back. Do you know anyone who races/autocrosses/is involved in sports cars? THESE are the type of people that weill be able to do as I describe. Gotta run right now, PM me is cool Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

Islandcool 0 #33 March 3, 2004 Ok everything appears to be inline except for the head. That is a full OE head for sure. There are always alternatives for something like that. Unless the head was badly damaged usually the head does not need to be replaced. The valves would but not the whole head. See if there is an LKQ (like kind quality) or rebuilt available. To qualify I do material damage for personal auto for a living. Still the whole head being replaced is bugging me but wthout knowing all the specifics I cannot say that it doesn't need to be replaced. Ed
Scratch 0 #34 March 3, 2004 Quote1805.60 cylinder head Why? At worst the valve guides are damaged and that is highly unlikely. There again VW is inclined to wear the guides early. Quote10.08 head bolts (x10) There are eight head bolts in a 4 cylinder engine. Are you going to use the other 2 as paper weights. Quote210.59 timing belt and tensioner(sp?) The belt I understand. The tensioner, I really doubt it. The lock bolt may have come loose is all. All this for a jumped timing belt. If that is what happened then slightly bent valves are all you should have. For the kind of repair that is being quoted on. I am surprised that the pistons are not lying in the sump. Go elsewhere you are being had.
Islandcool 0 #35 March 3, 2004 QuoteThe belt I understand. The tensioner, I really doubt it. The lock bolt may have come loose is all. Per VW the tensioner is required to be replaced every 60k miles. Now most times it's not required but ya know... Liabilty. QuoteThere are eight head bolts in a 4 cylinder engine. Are you going to use the other 2 as paper weights. Sorry Chief. 10 total. Confirmed in my service manual for 1993-early 1999 VW. Ed
Scratch 0 #36 March 3, 2004 Yep sorry my bad. 10 'Torque to yield' aka stretch bolts. Use once or you will be sorreeeee. Quote still seems excessive though considering the fault. There again agent prices make me as a rule. "Can I have a radiator hose please" "Sure that will be 300" "No can I have a plain rubber one without the 24 carat gold inlay and platinum clamps"
mcrocker 0 #37 March 3, 2004 Quotemy husband is out of town and i cant reach him, i just talked to this guy. are they screwing me here? do these costs sound right? i have to give this guy the go-ahead by tomorrow or i get charged MORE, and since i cant get my husband to answer the phone, i wanna know if these VW folks are tryin to fuck me. so anyone here that knows cars - HELP! They are ripping you off! Trying to get your to make a decision under pressure 'Buy now or it will cost more' bullshit reeks of used-car sales. Take a step back, Would the 3k be better spent as a deposit on a new to you car? Find out how much the trade is on the car.
mcrocker 0 #38 March 3, 2004 Quote*** \ Anyway, ask them (and another repair shop) what the costs would be for a new engine. ask for a REBUILT engine not a new one. If you ask the VW guy for a new engine that it what you'll get. You can also ask how much it would cost if they used rebuilt/used parts instead of OEM new. The mechanic should be able to yank the exact same motor out of a car at the junk heap for $1k, replace the belts and fluids. You don't know what you are buying at that point (junk heap car could have 200k miles) but it would be cheaper.
Islandcool 0 #39 March 3, 2004 QuoteQuote still seems excessive though considering the fault. There again agent prices make me as a rule Dude I agree. I had my own shop for 5 years until my health went south. I don't have the facilities to work on my own car and it ticks me off when I have to pay someone. At the same time I know what it cost to run a shop. In california the rents are high and if you generate any kind of Hazmat you're gonna end up paying for it. Let alone trying to find employees that don't have some kind of reoccuring drug or drinking problem. Ok enough ranting.
