wildblue 7 #1 February 26, 2004 So I have this Catalyst 4000 switch that likes to spontaneously reboot: Re-boot History: Feb 03 2004 13:50:27 0, Jan 06 2004 14: 5:33 0 Nov 04 2003 21:58:14 0, Oct 07 2003 9:31:53 0 Sep 17 2003 11:45:14 0, Jul 08 2003 5: 3:42 0 Jun 13 2003 9:22:49 0, Apr 30 2003 14:22:14 0 Feb 25 2003 13:56:42 0, Jan 22 2003 9: 0:33 0 It's pretty consistent - once a month. I don't really know much about these things, so I'm asking - what would cause this? I know it hasn't been touched in the 4-5 years we've had it. Would a software update maybe fix the problem? souleh 0 #2 February 26, 2004 If you dont get any usable replies by tomorrow I'll email my cisco academy lecturer.. they should know! Sorry I cant really help.. I'm only on semester two of my CCNA not really touched the hardware yet 'buttplugs? where?' - geno
Guest #3 February 26, 2004 I dunno - full buffers / overflow? Did you research the Cisco site to find spontaneous reboot issues in that model? I'm thinking some kind of overflow condition that triggers a reset, like any other processor, assuming it's an IOS issue. Perhaps a 'power bad' condition? Can you monitor the power supply? Temp faults would probably result in a lockup; aside from that, I think the Cisco IOS has a few "end-of-the-world" firmware resets it'll try in order to get itself running again. There are a couple of Cisco gurus who post here regularly; they'll most likely be along shortly. Sit tight. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." Vallerina 2 #5 February 26, 2004 Quote Any ideas? Yes. Go get some ice cream and beer. Put those in your freezer/fridge and make sure they age about a day or so.There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
katiebear21 0 #6 February 26, 2004 Does it default back to the original default factory settings? If so, check this out. Cisco has a pretty decent technical support site. Hope that helps. Katie Get your PMS glass necklace here
ScubaSteve 0 #7 February 26, 2004 I would guess it has a publicly accessable IP and you are prolly getting hit. Update IOS! 5 years is way to old.
wildblue 7 #8 February 26, 2004 Quote I dunno - full buffers / overflow? I don't think that's it. The "free mbufs" don't seem to decrease and stay there. Quote Did you research the Cisco site to find spontaneous reboot issues in that model? Yes, the only thing I could find only applies to Software Relase 12.1(11b)EW Quote Perhaps a 'power bad' condition? I'm going to plug it into a different UPS, we'll see if that help. I did notice: " Power Supply 1 Failures: 1 Power Supply 2 Failures: 64" ... it doesn't have a "Power Supply 2" - so I'm wondering if there's a voltage drop, and it's trying to switch to power supply 2. Or, if it just checks it on a reboot, it's not there so it logs an error. Dunno. Quote I would guess it has a publicly accessable IP and you are prolly getting hit. Update IOS! 5 years is way to old. No, I'm certain it's not a DOS or any type of attack like that. I would love to upgrade th IOS, however, to do damn near anything on Cisco's site (including downloading IOS images) you have to be registered and have some kind of service contract with them - which I don't have.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
BlkPnthr 0 #9 February 26, 2004 Sounds like the power supply might be the issue. If the battery is going bad in the UPS, it might cause issues. Let us know what you find out. Blue Skies, Steve
Clownburner 0 #10 February 26, 2004 Well, it could be a lot of things. It could indeed be the power supply getting weird; switching power supplies do have a limited lifespan. Those dates are pretty spaced out.. Is it possible that it's been happening for longer than that but you didn't notice? The reboot log only holds a certain number (I think the last 10). OTOH, I really can't tell you how often this sort of problem gets fixed with a software upgrade. It's pretty often. Personally, I'd try that first. Failing that, if you have maintenance, call TAC. If you don't, you should buy maintenance and THEN call TAC because they'll want to replace it and smartnet is cheaper than buying a new one. wildblue 7 #11 February 26, 2004 Well, I kinda inherited this problem. It's probably been happening ever since we got the thing, just no one noticed/cared. If you look at those dates, it's happened once a month, sometimes skipping one month, for the last year at least. I'm going to try the software update as soon as I find someone with access to the CCO site And we don't have the smartnet coverage on it anymore, but renewing it then reporting the problem has crossed my mind - I'm just going to see if I can save myself $1,400 first.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
