payback462 0 #1 February 18, 2004 ok, so yesterday we actually had somewhat decent (read: cold but no wind) weather. so i went to the dz and got to get a few jumps and make some $$ packing. but one jackass really irked me!! background: this guy has like 40 jumps and apparently forgot to pull about 20 jumps ago and was saved by an aff instructor doing a coached jump with him. this person has also shown (from dealing with him in the store and around the dz) that he lacks the ability to fully grasp concepts relating to gear and saftey. so anyways, were all standing in the loading area, geared up ready to go, and he strolls up with his rig on and this big-ass fleece pullover hanging out. So i tell him he might wanna tuck his fleece in. he tells me, oh its ok, i was going to freefly but ill just flatfly and leave it untucked!!! WTF!? like that makes any goddamn difference! but anyways, i politely explain to him that it doesnt matter wether hes freeflying or bellyflying, because as soon as he deploys the relative wind is going to be coming up at him. so he tells me "well, itll be ok" so i go back and forth for a minute or two with him till i finally said, "fine, dont tuck your shit in, i dont care" then i said to myself under my breath "at least he wont go in on a busy day and lose the DZ lots of money" sorry just had to vent, not to say that in any way wish the dude harm but i do wish him a big kick to the head to get it out of his ASS!! ok, im done btw it was great seeing blahr and peachsouthern(who still owes beer by the way!!!) there
peachsouthern 0 #2 February 18, 2004 First I'll start with a nice comment.....it was awesome meeting jumping with you all yesterday!!! Yet another great time at xkeys (even for a monday) Second...dude, it was like 20 ft out!!!!! But true, I do owe and next time i'm down there you all will get your beer!!! You could have come out with us afterwards, but someone had to go home "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. ifics 0 #3 February 18, 2004 One thing I have made a point of is to listen to people with experience, thats the way you learn. If you think "my" way is the right way and don't take advice that could save you're life then you might want to re-think some things.. At least you tried, thats more then some would of done... Gawain 0 #4 February 18, 2004 I have a question, did he get on the load and jump? Not to vindicate his actions, just curious...So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! payback462 0 #5 February 18, 2004 QuoteYou could have come out with us afterwards, but someone had to go home dude i was tired, im an old man now (just turned 20) so i cant party all night like i used to Quote One thing I have made a point of is to listen to people with experience woah woah, dont go telling people i have experience or that i have any idea wtf im doing, wouldnt want to give the wrong impression! QuoteI have a question, did he get on the load and jump? Not to vindicate his actions, just curious... yup, he obviously knew better than i or the people with thousands of jumps (or pretty much anybody else who stopped to think about it for more then ten seconds) who always told me i should tuck my shit in, but anyways, since im not an instructor theyre wasnt much i could do. oh well
peachsouthern 0 #6 February 18, 2004 One thing I have learned and loved is everyone looks out for one another (even complete strangers)Listening to other people and their advice is the greatest aspect of being new to the sport. From what I have experienced so far, everyone is willing to help. If someone is willing to help....take it, and listen to it . If you don't feel comfortable with what they told you, ask someone else. Ignorance is your worst enemy in this sport. "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. rogue108 0 #9 February 18, 2004 This was the same guy going "Damn, I can't jump" while he was in the plane on the ride up. I turn around to ask why. He tells me that he forgot to stow his toggles. I asked him he why he didn't notice it when he was packing. Didn't you see all the excess length on the steering lines ???. I guess not... I told him that he should make sure everything is checked before you close your rig, finding out on the ride up is not a good time to remember you forgot something, next time it could be worse. happythoughts 0 #12 February 18, 2004 I keep trying. The consequences are pretty harsh. Tough as it seems, you just can't give up. I've offended a few people, but they'll get to live long enough to forgive me. Generally, people make decisions based on everything they know. The guy said it was ok based on everything he knows. The solution is to give them new knowledge. I usually continue on with a comment that starts like "Well, the reason why I'm mentioned it is..." "I was thinking that in freefall, maybe the wind would blow the fleece up over your handles. Are you sure that it is ok?" Actually, it is good that you posted this because other people may not be thinking of the impact of loose/bulky clothing. I hope that readers will consider their cutaway and reserve handles when getting dressed. Loose clothing can cover them at important moments.

ZoneRat 0 #16 February 18, 2004 "... because as soon as he deploys the relative wind is going to be coming up at him..." Yeah. IF he can deploy. Loose clothing likes to cover handles. No reason to scream Darwin or bowling just yet. Some folk just take a little longer to understand certain things. Until then maybe there's someone around that can take him under their wing and try to help him out. If he doesn't like receiving advice from his peers, maybe there's a coach or instructor that has the time. Hopefully his bucket of luck wont empty out before his bucket of experience fills up.“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophies.”

flyangel2 2 #18 February 18, 2004 Quotesince im not an instructor theyre wasnt much i could do. oh well Do you feel comfortable bringing the problem to the attention of a more experienced jumper or JM at your DZ? Is your profile correct, it says you have 3+ jumps. Do you think the guy didn't listen to you because of your lower numbers? Continue what you are doing, pointing out things that you think could be a problem. payback462 0 #20 February 18, 2004 Quoteit says you have 3+ jumps. Do you think the guy didn't listen to you because of your lower numbers? haha, i just did that as a joke, i have somewheres around 300 jumps (cant find my log book) i think he didnt listen to me because hes a jackass. this is the same person who wondered why he had to repeat a coached dive when he forgot to pull! the only reason i didnt bring an instructor into it is because theyre were none close by at the time, and by that point i was done trying to point out the obvious. oh well, ya cant help everybody!
