hmmm whats a girl to do

My cousin is an entertainer for Holland America Lines... her next voyage will be in Europe and the Med. There is a 2 week cruise starting in Athens and ending in Lisbon, Portugal (basically sailing and hitting about every port in the Mediterranean Sea.
Do I risk booking a flight to Europe on stand-by for the cruise, or should I just eat it and pay full price for the cruise???

Hey Darcy,

The Med cruise is very popular - the particular cruise I'm looking at isn't until October, and several of the room options are already closed. Added by the fact that the vessel for this cruise is the smallest in it's fleet and only holds about 800 passengers. So I'm pretty nervous about doing the stand-by thing.... I guess I could always back pack it from Athens to Lisbon

Oh, yeah, I meant to post about the pic's.... I have turned over the CD's to the DZ to post on the website. Don't worry, if you aren't a staff member of SkydiveElsinore you're pretty much safe! [shaking head/finger] Karl, Karl, Karl!!! Not sure when they'll get posted (up to the web host) but everyone was excited to get them on there!

I have only been on one Mediterranean cruise. . .don't remember it being full or not, I am more familiar with the Carribean and Mexico cruises. . .

And thanks for the info on the pics. . .There are some pics posted on Elsinore's web, but I KNOW there were more than that taken. . .lol!

3 years ago I flew to Amsterdam on stand-by (my Aunt works for United). No problem getting there. Did some traveling, and then it was time to go home. I called the airline (I was in Munich at this point) to see how full the flight was and to 'register' my name as a stand-by passenger. They said I'd have no problem getting on. Well - they lied. I took a train to Frankfurt because the airline said the flight up there had lots of room. Fooled again - I was one of about 45 stand bys - and there were paying passengers that didn't get on. Long story short, I ended up getting very familiar with Frankfurt airport until I spent about $700 to get a one way flight to the US. I then used a stand-by pass to get back to DC. It was terrible.

The point to my rambling: just a warning - since there is no guarantee - be ready with a back up plan.

Buy the airfare and book standby on the boat. If the boat gets filled up use the $$ you would have spent on the full price cruise to rent a car and tour the European country side. Either you get a great cruise at a great price or you get to see Europe. You are rolling the dice but you really can't lose.

Hi Darcy - the pictures that are currently on the web page are the pic's that Amy Recca took with her digital camera. Because I'm a decade behind and don't own a digital camera we all had to wait!!!

Thanks! That is exactly what I'm afraid of - getting over there and getting stuck!!!

Very good ideas from everyone - I think I'll do it, and just make sure I have a back up plan in case I don't get a slot on the vessel. I mean HELL how many chances do I get to go to Europe anyway!!!

BTW, this will be first time in Europe, and first time on a cruise ship!!!

I just realized... depending when you want to go, you may be stick up the proverbial creek if the boat is full. Its the Olympics this year in Athens. Make sure you dont go around these dates as flights, hotels, everything will be either full or rip-off expensive.

Hey Remster,

The Olympics are scheduled for August, and the cruise is scheduled for October... hopefully by then things will have settled down!

I'm not opposed to trekking it to Lisbon though... a few years back I went to New Zealand and toured the place in a camper van - what an amazing way to see the countryside!
