Things to do in S. Carolina

Recommended Posts

I and a few friends of mine were thinking of taking a road trip to South Carolina in late March. What sort of things should we make sure not to miss. I have a feeling we will be aiming for Myrtle Beach as our ultimate destination but that still leaves most of the state that we will be driving through or past.

So who's got the inside track on South Carolina in the Spring?

Be sure to hit the dz in Chester, good folks! Tell them all Hey for Dave and Beth! Good food in Greenville, can name a dozen restaurants. 45 minutes north in Asheville, NC is the Biltmore Estate, what a place to spend a day! BEAUTIFUL in the spring. Great hiking all over Asheville if you are into that. Lots of whitewater there too. If you need any info PM me. Beth

Charleston is an awesome. It was once even voted the friendliest city in America (don't remember the source I got that from). I've spent a lot of time there when an old friend went to school there. Lots to do and very pretty. Everything in the city is within walking distance. SO MUCH good food too! :)

Hey! I'm from Myrtle. Ripley's Aquarium is there if you have spare cash and it's pretty cool. Charleston is a cool city with good restaurants. Also if you hit myrtle make sure you go down to Murrells Inlet to where all the seafood restaurants are, that is some of the best seafood eating in SC. If you hit it close to spring go down to Brookgreen Gardens past Murrells Inlet. Also in the summertime, The Pier at Garden City rocks. :)

Hey there: Make sure you hit Skydive Coastal Carolinas near Southport NC. Its not far Myrtle beach (a 30 minute drive)

The folks are great and the view from altitude is breathtaking, ..oh and did I mention the jumps onto the beach or the Otter that they will have from March 01? B|

Pm me if you want more some info..

Oh man, there is a resturant @ Murrells inlet that just rocks! I can't remember the name, but they have this bucket of seafood that has everything in it. Crab, Cawfish, Clams, all sorts of stuff. God I wish I knew the name of that place!

Dick's is great but there isn't a Dick's in Murrells Inlet, its more on the north end of the beach towards North Myrtle. The seafood restaurant strip in MI has like 20 restaurants probably and I can probably only name like 5 off hand even though I live right there. Drunken Jacks, Nances (awesome oysters), Bovines (fancy steak/seafood), Divines (owned by same people excellent but pricey seafood), The Crab Shack, The Admirals Flagship (might be making that up) , Alice Flagg's, River City Cafe (more of a little burger place), Suck Bang Blow (just had to include, local biker bar), ooo ooo and Lee's Inlet Kitchen (great southern cooking). Creek rats is another and there is one where they have a bunch of hats on the wall/ceiling but I can't remember the name offhand.... Lots of great places to eat down there.

Was it Dicks Last resort? They're right around there and serve everything in buckets...and the waiters curse at you and write sexually outragous things on those chef's hats they make you wear. I had a lot of fun when I went!

Hahahaha I just remembered one of my hats from there ... "I can braid my nipple hairs." hahahahah Those things are hilarious.

if you're in the spartanburg area, go eat at the beacon. :) double chili-cheeseburger a-plenty is the way to go. it's about 7 miles off the beaten path (beaten path being I-26). that place has been around since dirt and last time i was there (few years), they still had curb service. if anyone knows, does JC (the dude that took your order and yelled at ya cuz he couldn't hear) still work there? the man was a legend.

other than that, skydive in chester at skydive carolina (home of the rodriguez bros).

oh yeah, if you're traveling south on 95, go to south of the border. realize what a waste of $$ the billboards were.

if you're near the foothills (upper left side bordering NC and GA), take in some of the scenery. mtns are beautiful and the rivers are fun to raft.

SC. i miss the scenery and i miss the beacon, but man do i LOVE the turbines, the tunnel, and 7-day-a-week dzs here in fl. :)

I would suggest Charleston as well. Beautiful place, with lots to do. I was stationed there once, was a great duty station until the bastard, klinton, closed all the bases and the shipyard down. Some of the places you might want to check out, Patriot's Point. Tour the World War II aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, the World War II destroyer U.S.S. Laffey, the submarine U.S.S. "Clamagor" and the S.S. Savanna, the world's only nuclear powered ocean liner. All are on display at Patriot's Point. Go down to "The Battery" in Charleston. Take a tour of Fort Sumter. Somewhere around Charleston, the C.S.S. Hunley is on display. They salvaged her a year or two ago. The Hunley was the first submarine to sink a ship, this occured in Charleston Harbor during the War Between the States. Charlestown Landing is also nice. These are just a few of the things that there are to do in Charleston. Go there and your will have fun.

Hey Arlo, you DO know that you'll have to come visit Cora and I sometime and show us what we're missing here, right? We've got a place for you if you need to crash. B|

I'm going to be travelling with a group of non-skydivers, so skydiving isn't going to be part of the trip, sadly. Thanks for the ideas folks, keep em coming if you have any more. I think we are going to spend some time in Charleston since everyone seems to like the city.

Check out http://www.hunley.org/. Looks like mid-April is going to be busy there, but it'd be worth it to see a piece of history.
