kmcguffee 0 #2 February 7, 2004 I have to vote We Were Soldiers. I liked how it covered what a commander's wife and the soldier's wives go through during wartime. The fighting was also very realistic and accurate. "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do." Ben Franklin
tunaplanet 0 #3 February 7, 2004 Believe it or not, I have not seen 'When We Were Soldiers.' I heard it was excellent. I had to vote for 'Courage Under Fire.' I still to this day get all teary eyed watching it. Very emotional movie. If anyone asks why I didn't put 'Navy SEALs' or 'Sniper' on the list needs to be castrated immediately. The first time I watched it was with my SWAT team while we were on standby for a large event. Not the crowd you want to cry in front of. wzettler 0 #5 February 7, 2004 For those people who voted for "Full Metal Jacket" (which by the way is one of my favorite movies) it is not a great war movie IMO. It is a great boot camp movie IMO, but not a great war movie. That part of the movie was crap from what I understand. Disclaimer: I am no where near old enough to know what vietnam was like, so bear that in mind. I do know a few Vietnam Vets that were on the front lines and that is where I get my opinion from. They think that that movie was shit as far as depicting what Vietnam was like. Again, just my $.02. I think when Jesus said "love your enemy" he probably meant don't kill them. Kennedy 0 #12 February 7, 2004 Awesome list man, well done. You left off "A Bridge Too Far," IMO, but that wouldn't have gotten my vote anyway. Definately a great war movie though. Saving Private Ryan: I won't hold that fact that it was a huge box office hit against it. Incredible movie. Apocalypse Now: got the insanity of war covered quite nicely, thank you very much. Deer Hunter: the reason I can say I love DeNiro and not be embarassed. Platoon: overrated. Sheen was unimpressive [like that's news] Full Metal Jacket: do or die! gung ho! gung ho! gung ho! fun movie, but like people've said not much of a war movie. More of a war flick. Good movie though. Bridge on the River Kwai: [and the other old movies you listed]: absolutely wonderful. just, wow. Enemy at the Gates: best movie concerning sniping that I have ever seen. I have to say though, the real Vassili Zaitsev was one of the ugliest men I have ever seen. Not exactly Jude Law for looks [women have told me he's "hot" but then again the princess in Braveheart was barely a toddler, so hey, it's the movies] Black Hawk Down: too choppy to really get it the first time, but doesn't that just make it better as a war movie, if less enjoyable as a flick? Fog of war, Mr. Murphy anyone? The Patriot: I'm surprised someonevoted for it. Good movie, would have been better if it hadn't followed Braveheart, but not really all the much for a movie. If you include this in the list, why not Braveheart? Pearl Harbor: anyone who votes for this deserves to be in the same category as 'Navy SEALs' and 'Sniper' witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Kennedy 0 #14 February 7, 2004 QuoteDoes Band of Brothers count?? Not a movie, but GOOD CALL!! Also, I wish they could make a movie about Carlos Hathcock and not screw it up. That would be an intense movie. I can't remember the title of the book someone wrote about him, but I've read it and reread it many times. Excellent.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

tunaplanet 0 #17 February 7, 2004 SHIT!!!! I forgot a real good war movie. Can anyone figure out which Clint Eastwood movie I left out that was really good IMO? Forty-two
jceman 1 #18 February 7, 2004 QuoteSHIT!!!! I forgot a real good war movie. Can anyone figure out which Clint Eastwood movie I left out that was really good IMO? My guess would be "Kelly's Heroes". A couple other good ones you left off: "12 O'Clock High" an absolute classic with Gregory Peck "In Harm's Way" 1965 movie with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Carroll O'Conner and Patricia Neal, another real winner. For probably the best comedic war movie I ever saw "Operation Petticoat" with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. Man, I just keep thinking of other good war movies, but have to add to classic submarine flicks, "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "The Enemy Below". Great movies. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
tunaplanet 0 #19 February 7, 2004 Actually I was thinking of 'Heartbreak Ridge.' Great movie. Forty-two

diablopilot 2 #21 February 7, 2004 Had to go with "We Were Soldiers" although I've seen every movie on the list and some of them are truly great. I'm gonna watch a few again. I remeber FMJ was quite shocking to me because I chuckled at the antics and abuse during the "BASIC" sceen until the incident in the latrine. It was like a bucket of ice water in the face and someone saying "War is hell, sometimes before you even get there" Damn' some good movies fo' sho'. There is a song on the "We Were Sodiers" soundtrack that movies me everytime I hear it. "Sgt. MacKenzie" by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie. Haunting. I'd like to find more of his music.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Did not like "When Trumpets Fade" at all. Bad acting other than the main character, and horrible special effects. If you've ever shot an M-1 Garand you know it doesnt sound like a toy cap gun. Bad artillery simulators and bad flame throwers. Edit:my vote is for Saving Private Ryan, but I also like a lot of the old WW2 flicks.
