Lost Prairie vs. Rantoul: Battle of the Summer Boogies

Recommended Posts

Lost Prarie.

It's not the comercial venture WFFC is though. If you're all about specialty A/C and the other hype, don't do LP. If you're cool with hanging with good people, drinking like a fish, and enjoying some of the nations most beautiful land, then go to LP.

There will be good people at WFFC too, but it's a different vibe.

Edit: You'll probably notice that LP is not advertized to a large extent, it's more of a word of mouth, friends invite friends, people return each year kind of thing. It's back to the grass roots of "comunity" or "family" skydiving.

I'll be back there....

Oddly enough, the only time I see anything for the WFFC is on here, if I actually go to the website, or the one or 2 adds in Parachutist.

It too is largely word of mouth. It just happens to be on the mouths of thousands of skydivers instead of hundreds. I will do LP someday, sure, but I don't plan on missing a WFFC.

LP,
would like to get to Rantoul eventually, but LP is only a 5 hr very scenic drive. Would say that if time is short for ya the 2nd weekend is the one ta plan on being there for... already have the time off from work for that one...

I was trying to convay the feeling about LP. LP is a 36 year old boogie and other than the addition of Turbine A/C it doesn't feel like it's changed much in that time.

WFFC is very apealing to the masses, and new skydivers are attracted easily. Those that like WFFC may not like LP. Those that like the "comunity" feel of skydiving can find it at both boogies.

WffC sounds great, but I only live about a 100 miles from Lost Prairie in the summer, so that's where I'll be going. I used to jump with some of the old timers in that area 30 years ago. I got my rigger license with Fred Sands (the owner of the place) back in the 70's and have also made a ton of jumps with Dave Tousy when we jumped in Kalispell way back when. Dave is the Native American guy who owns the bar. He's the only guy I know who looks the same as he did 30 years ago. So it's fun renewing old aquaintances, making lot's of jumps, and partying down a little. It's also a treat being able to jump with people who've forgot more about jumping than I'll probably ever know, like Mad John and Bill Von (and a lot of others). And don't forget Jeane is bringing her boat this year, and we all want a ride....Steve1

Well, I am voting for lost prairie. . .but mainly because it will probably be my first "Away" boogie and I thought WFFC might be a bit much for this newbie. . .besides. . .I love fish. . .

Wow! I was thinking of going to Lost Prarie myself, Darcy. Maybe we can go together! :)
You know, I am also a little intimidated to go to the WFFC Boogie for some reason. I have no idea why, but it frightens me. (Illinois? WTF!?! :o) Believe it or not, I hate being amidst larger groups of people like that. I almost have a phobia about it, unless I have something to focus on...like jumping out of a plane. Anyhoo, I am thinking that if I can get the free time and $$$, then I will go to Lost Prairie, too. :)

ok.. you have to come.. we really do need women belly flyers up there.;)

Oh and as for fish... there are a WHOLE bunch of lakes around there. I plan on bringing up a bit of salmon and halibut from my freezer. Juan said I can leave my BBQ/Smoker at home because he has his big one up there already ( the BBQ guy over next to the DZ.Com tent at Eloy with the SUPER YUMMY BBQ Beef).
Hopefully I can find some of those 30 pound Lake Trout that the Montana State Gamewarden told me about...some fresh fish would be SWEET. its a campout girliegirl.. but if you can make it up to Seattle on the friday before the Boogie starts.. I will be driving over for the whole thing...I plan on getting there on Sat morning early the first weekend. I was going to just do the last weekend but hell... I HAVE to just suck it up.. take the time off and take my camper and my boat over for the whole thing. I love the fact I can't log onto a computer.. or get any cell phone calls for a whole week... just PARTY and jump...

You will have something to focus on, jumping.

There are so many big landing areas out at WFFC. The spacing of the aircraft works well enough, that there aren't that many people in the air at the same time. Bill wrote a great article How to survive WFFC Take a read there. It may put some of your fears to rest.

What are the dates on the LP boogie? Is there a website?

Yup there sure is...http://www.skydivelostprairie.com/pages/events.htm

Glad I go there in the summer I called the DZO Fred Sand to ensure I had a place to park my cabin cruiser when its not down at the lake... its been -40F a few times this winter up there... brrrrr but at least it should kill the damn grasshoppers off.

As Bill von told me a few years back ...

Lost Prairie:
The weather's terrible
The skydive's suck
The beer's warm
And there are too many damn Canadians ...

There ... that should keep everyone away ... ;)

Seriously, LP is FANTASTIC (if you like hot weather and nekkid people). :P

I'm going to the one that doesn't offer the possibilities of TORNADOES! If I wanted tornadoes I would just go in the Perris wind tunnel and have my kids blast me with a fire hose from below.

Specialty aircraft? You see if the Herc even shows up this year ( or are they chapter-13 already). I doubt the DC-3 does.......There may be a DC-9, but it might be at LP also, and it will also be here most of the time.

WFFC does have the best parties, some of the worst bands, some great hospitality by the supportive locals, some of the best parties, Some of the worst beerhag fun bags. All of the vendors are reasonable and not as commercial as they could be ( IE as gouging) It does sport the very tasty Carbonezone. Its also one of the easiest places to score crack.:D:D.

Almost perfect. I was wondering now, with Roger gone (bless his soul) and Rook and Missy running the show, if the old Kirlin-Nelson rivalry would finally get the back burner. It seems it has. Summerfest now ends the same weekend that the WFFC starts (at least for this year.

clap clap clap, good for you, Missy and Rook. For this reason I may actually be able to make Summerfest for a day or 2 this year.

That is the best news I've heard (read) all day. I was just talking to Renee last night that my plan is to head out to WFFC early so I could do some jumping at SDC. We had no idea that Summerfest was then. I've so got a plan ;)

Uh.. only 1 case of Beer... at a boogie like LP.. .. no way you ae getting off that cheap.. You better bring a few more.
I plan on taking a few... and there is ALWAYS the Lang Creek Brewery right there to restock with some goooood beer.

Oh and do not bring any of that LITE crap.... I will NOT be polluting Camp Washington ( AKA Camp Cutaway last summer) with any LITE beer.
