Neptune vs. Neptune 2

Recommended Posts

I checked the gear reviews and searched the forums, but couldn't find an exact answer to my question. I'm looking for a digital altimeter to use as a visual (very happy with my Protrack as an audible). I'm mainly looking at Neptune 2s, but I was wondering what the difference is between it and the original Neptune. I saw one thread saying that if you update the firmware, they are essentially the same unit, so does this mean all the hardware and capabilities are the same? Thanks.

Edit: My main reasons for a new altimeter are 1) I'm anticipating doing a lot of wingsuiting in the future and the protrack has the freefall limit and 2) I'd like something more accurate and with canopy alarms

So I guess my main question is would there be any significant difference in which unit I purchase in regards to the things I'd like to use it for?

From an old email from Mike G. of Chutingstar:

"The Neptune2 and N3 are visual and audible altimeters, as well as logbooks. The Neptune2 has a plastic case and a standard battery. The N3 has a metal case and rechargeable battery. The operation of the Neptune2 and N3 are identical, it's just the casing is better on the N3 (and it has the rechargeable battery). "

...

"And I would recommend the N3 over the Neptune2, just because the casing is better. The N3 is more expensive, but worth it, if going with one of those two."
I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

The difference between the Neptune and Neptune 2 is primarily software which can be updated.
