EricaH 0 #176 January 22, 2004 The news on this is amazingly horrible, but the return from our wonderful community is so uplifting. I almost cry every time I read this thread. Velocity & Aerodyne are def manufacturers I will prob buy from because of their wonderful contribution. I wish I could fly to CA to jump there (but I don't want to pay an airline over $250 to get there)... I LOVED Elsinore the weekend I was there last year - it is such a wonderful place, the people, the land & the atmosphere are all gorgeous. Because of this I called my renter's insurance agency. For an additional $75/year; I have up to $10,000 in gear covered... I thought it was covered - glad I checked. You all are wonderful people, we can only hope that some good will come from the accident (beyond the tremendous response already shown). Love & hope you all my skysisters & brothers. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)
Nightingale 0 #177 January 22, 2004 I am moving, and when I get my new apartment, I will acquire a renters' insurance policy that will cover my gear along with my computer and stuff. Insurance is one thing that its more expensive to go without!
rjf98 0 #178 January 22, 2004 Another manufacturer I would like to mention. While I have been asked to not mention specific details about the deal. VIGIL USA has stepped up BIG TIME. Kim's generous offer will not be passed up by too many of us I'm sure. I for one will be jumping a Vigil very soon. Any of the instructors who haven't heard can PM me and I'll be happy to fill you in on the details. THANK YOU KIM.
EricaH 0 #179 January 22, 2004 Def do... per year mine is $250 for $40,000 of stuff & then $75 for $10,000 of skydiving gear specifically. Everyone should get it. All my stuff is covered anywhere; be it in the locker @ the dz, in my car when traveling, in a U-haul when moving, in a friend's car when they're borrowing it - anywhere. All you need is an addr to get it. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PhreeZone 20 #180 January 22, 2004 Precision and Velocity have really came forward on this and I know I'll keep it in mind when I'm looking to replace my gear this fall. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the ash/debris jump from the staff at Elsinore.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
rjf98 0 #181 January 22, 2004 I've seen a lot of people posting that they are impressed with what the manufactures have done. So am I. Please remember that when you go to purchase your gear. These aren't monolithic companies they're jumpers like you and me. Make sure you drop them a note letting them know why you chose their company when you decide to purchase. Jen1129 0 #183 January 22, 2004 QuoteStudents and Experienced Jumpers... Come jump at Elsinore this weekend to show your support. I will definitely be there... I have been renting student gear, but don't want to take student gear away from actual students if there is a limited amount of gear. Maybe I can rent from GroundZero, or even just help clean up. But I can't imagine how anyone could stay away this weekend... That is so wonderful about the manufacturers who are replacing gear for free or low cost. Hey Jen. . .be sure to say hi. . .I'll be there making a couple solo student jumps. . .or whatever I can do. . .I don't care, I just need to go hug everyone. . .lol________________________________________ Take risks not to escape life… but to prevent life from escaping. ~ A bumper sticker at the DZ FGF #6 Darcy
Nightingale 0 #185 January 22, 2004 most of the cleanup is done. the burned buildings have been removed. You can rent gear from ground zero as long as you have your A license.

Stupid real jobs suck. I will be there, hoping to jump but not expecting anything... it will depend on gear. I have rented from GroundZero before but didn't like the Spectre (yeah, I'm a wuss, but I'm used to 9-cells and it just seemed jittery to me.)

rocket 0 #188 January 22, 2004 Being here in Idaho, and as an intern I do not have much to offer, it was sad to hear what had happened. Elsinore was the first DZ I jumped at away from my own DZ, the people there were very nice while there. And since I have received continued support. This is a perfect example of why I partially chose to enter into the community of skydiving, the closeness, care and concern each one of us has for the other. The actions by those to help the people at Elsinore only solidifies the fact that I am amungst the best 1% of the population. Shark and Lew, sorry to hear about what happened. I just wanted to extend my condolences to you all there at Elsinore for you losses. It was good to hear that noone lost something even more precious, such as their life, in this tragedy. Maybe this is a stupid question, but I do not think I caught what really happened? Arson, faulty mechanical, or electrical or what? Can you give details? I will be coming down in the spring time to see you all again, till then ............ smile while you fly! DJL 235 #190 January 22, 2004 To repeat myself once more all over again. This outpouring of good will is great but: PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN INSURANCE A 1 hr fire rated barrier may be made with 1/2" Type-X gypsum wallboard on framing. This means that the wall will last for one hour under flames and will then be able to withstand the blast of a fire hose at the 59 minute mark. Better ratings may be achieved with further layers of rated gyp board, a rated filler, and various other combination. This is easy info to find on the net and anyone with a permit to build can figure out how to do this. If you or the DZ still wants fire insurance then this should keep your premiums down."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

rjf98 0 #192 January 22, 2004 May be the answer. I don't know. What about heat on the other side of the door? What about if the fire started on the INSIDE of the fire proof room you just created? I think we all agree that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Due to some pretty tight restrictions Elsinore was not able to put up fixed structures (don't know if that is still the case) You can put in all the fire proof panels you want in a mobile home structure. That things gonna burn. That being said. Elsinore has done us (the instructors) right by this fire. Even when they are taking a large financial hit they are taking care of us. DJL 235 #193 January 22, 2004 QuoteWhat about heat on the other side of the door? What about if the fire started on the INSIDE of the fire proof room you just created? You're gonna have to see the big picture on this one. Your DZ and many other's can do you right by protecting their and your assets. If someone who lost gear wants to borrow my old Turbo ZX 185 for a while then I'll pay for the shipping. I doubt it so what I have to offer is engineering, since that's what pays the rent. Take it or leave it. There's not much you can do about an existing facility but if a new one is coming in then keep fire protection in mind. It won't cost much more and it'll save a possible repeat of what happened at your DZ.
