replacing cell phones

Recommended Posts

Alright, my cell phone is crapping out on me and it's no longer under warranty.

I'd like to just buy a new phone and throw my SIM card in it, but no one will sell me a phone without a new service contract or a ridiculously high price/activation fee, etc.

Any way around it?

Nope. NOt that I know of anyway.

Ask your current subscriber for the minimum Cointract and a new phone and they may be able to cut a deal on the phone.

That's bullshit. You can get pretty much any phone you like hooked up to your current service without doing another contract. Hint: buy your phone from a phone store, not a service provider. I have had four different phones on my current contract. Never once got them from the service provider.

Yep - happened to me about 10 years ago. My phone was stolen (broke the window on my car and destroyed my CD changer too) and the phone company told me I "had" to buy another $300 phone from them. I couldn't even just pay the monthly fee until the contract ended. Those kind of sales tactics should be illegal.

I went to the local used cell phone store and got an old motorola for $30 and they programmed it for me so it worked with my existing contract.

go to ebay, you can get lots of phones there then either call/go to your service provider or go to a place that deals with the service.

Or go to the mall...ever see any of those little shop things in the middle of the mall, or sometimes they're the small ones next to stores. We have tons of them in our malls and they sell all kinds of phones without contracts

Careful about ebay. If someone bought a cell phone from a privider, chances are that it will only work with that provider. To get around that, you need to get the phone's unlock code from the provider, not an easy task.

My $250 Samsung S105 went tits-up a few weeks back and was 3 weeks out of warranty.

I called my provider, T-Mobile, and I had a brand new replacement 6 days later, no charge. I bought the phone from them and they took care of it.

They also replaced my old Nokia 8290 two years prior, same deal.

If you're with them, I'd just give them a call and tell them your phone died and what can they do for you.

I got my new phone free. Every so often I qualify for an upgrade on my phone. I did have to sign on for another year, though. That doesn't bother me though, I'm pretty happy with my carrier.:)
