osuskydiver 0 #1 January 27, 2004 I have read many articles in soldier magazine and have heard many more seasoned soldiers talk about this topic. I have only been in for 2 years so I have always worn it. Just wondering what others think. Personally it does not bother me, 2 more months and I will be wearing the maroon berret. any other suggestions for head gear? By the time you read this you have already read it. koz2000 1 #2 January 27, 2004 I think most people's problem is that the Army wants everyone to feel "special." Just giving them a beret doesnt' make them special. It was a sign that you achieved more than just basic training. You'll see the difference when you get to your unit and put on a maroon beret. Being able to have worn the black beret when it was the ranger regiment's and the green with sf, I know I had to earn it rather than it being handed to me. Ask SkymonkeyOne (spent 20yrs in the Army and most of it in SF) what he thinks.______________________________________________ - Does this small canopy make my balls look big? - J. LouDiamond 1 #3 January 27, 2004 Quote 2 more months and I will be wearing the red berret. I think you mean Maroon unless you are Air Force, Canadian or Brit among others. I won't even go into the whole debacle behind giving everyone the black beret. IMO it was the worst thing that happened and a slap in the face of Ranger Batt."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
DShiznit 0 #4 January 27, 2004 I too think it's a fucking insult. When I was active, the black beret was coveted by Rangers. I was Infantry, so this was always a big thing for us. We had the camo hats, so when I first saw that everyone had a black beret, I couldn't believe. I had to at least go to Ranger school to even see several in one place. Now you can see that at the PX. Lose them.

Dougjumper 0 #6 January 27, 2004 Me Personallly I was An Army Airborne Ranger. And I can say by Experience that the Black Beret was A Ranger Trademark. In other words your Earned the right to wear it by Hard Ass Combat training. I know for a Fact not every Soldier in the Army has had Ranger training and it was not easy to become a Ranger. Ranger Battalions were Specialty Units that Adapted The Scroll and Beret. Just the Same with Airbone Soldiers in an Airborne unit. They earned the Maroon Beret by becoming Jump Qualified and being in an Airborne Unit. So for regular Army Soldiers they havent earned this type of training yet and therefore I dont agree with it.. I have been expanding my vocabulary of the Queens English and have been able to understand most of you Brits now. Eloy was a good language immersion for me Anyway, I came accross a new word last night on the tele and am wondering what it's translations is. osuskydiver 0 #8 January 27, 2004 Right, I understand the rangers being insulted, now the rangers are wearing a tan berret so they can be distinguished again. I have only seen 1 and he didn't seem to like wearing the tan. By the time you read this you have already read it.
lawrocket 3 #9 January 27, 2004 I was your everyday REMF officer when Shinseki put the change into effect. My unit was one of he last to receive them. I hated that the Rangers got shit on to make the rest of the Army look cool. It's bullshit to knock tradition in favor of self esteem. It's a shame that the Army has bought into this nonense. I was only glad I didn't have to wear the Bus driver hat or the c--t cap anymore. But they shouldn't have messed with Ranger tradition. My wife is hotter than your wife. BBKid 0 #10 January 27, 2004 Two meanings: 1) A drinking vessel, i.e. a mug of hot chocolate (maybe you already knew that one) 2) Someone who is gullible, or always being victimised. So, a common saying over here in a situation where the same person has to clear up the dog shit, for example, might be "And who cleans it up, muggins here". Some people also say its where the word mugging came from. Nick --------------------------- "I've pierced my foot on a spike!!!"

I have only seen 1 and he didn't seem to like wearing the tan. Complete BS giving everyone else in the Army the black beret...my husband was a Ranger...I was in the Army in a commo unit (obviously not a Ranger. That was before the change...I wore a basic PC like everyone else...) If they wanted uniformity of the rest of Army personnel, they should have given THEM the damn tan beret and let the Rangers who busted their ASSES to get their symbol of achievement keep their black. I have often wondered about the background of the general that implemented that change...I wonder if perhaps he failed Ranger school?? (That is TOTAL speculation, I have no idea, but why the hell else would anyone give that right to people that didn't earn it???) COMPLETELY FRIES ME...~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
DaGimp 0 #12 January 27, 2004 Here is my outlook.... I feel like others that the beret is a sign that you arent just an average soldier....you have achieved more. I personall hate to see soldiers walking around with a maroon beret and no airborne wings. Why should they get it just because they are in the unit....uniformity?? I was in 7th Special Forces Group for two years, granted i wasnt SF i was a part of the unit, and i didnt get a green beret for uniformity, nor did i want one because i didnt earn it. But if me being in an SF unit still wearing a maron beret, why cant the legs in an airborne unit still wear the black beret, or more preferabllity the leg cap....cause they didnt earn a beret."Professor of Pimpology"~~~Bolas
DShiznit 0 #13 January 27, 2004 REMF........ hehe - I haven't heard that one in years. and when I was in, Shinseki was our Division Cmdr - 1st Cav back in the mid 90's.
osuskydiver 0 #14 January 27, 2004 I believe General Shinseki made it through Ranger school just fine. But I agree, it was wrogn to take the black one away from the Ranger Bat By the time you read this you have already read it.
koz2000 1 #15 January 27, 2004 No actually Shinseki wore a ranger tab on his uniform but he was never part of ranger regiment (as far as I know). There's a big difference in a person who completes ranger school and a ranger. (I guess you have to be there). I believe he also came with the cheesy "Army of One" bullshit....______________________________________________ - Does this small canopy make my balls look big? - J. Dougjumper 0 #17 January 27, 2004 I know what your saying... Never made sense to me either..I had a few Soldiers assigned to my unit neither was Jump Qualified..but wore the Maroon Beret. Dont know why the Army assigned Soldiers in this fashion to units.. I always went by the Wings on your Chest and Ranger Tab on the Arm..That away I could truely tell.. dgskydive 0 #19 January 27, 2004 It is a slap in the face to the many many Rangers out there past, present and future! Berrets used to mean something. It made you stand out from the others. It showed that you had something extra in you that the normal soldier either dosen't have or didn't want to work hard and earn. Very upsetting day when that happened. If I was s Ranger I would be ripping them off peoples heads as a protest! There was talk for years when I was in of switching everyone to Berrets but they would have been the color of your Corp. (i.e. Orange for signal, lt Blue for infantry) I didn't think that idea was to bad but still took away from the guys (and girls) that really worked hard to get theirs. Basic traing is a vaction campared to Airborne School, Ranger school and the Q course.Dom

koz2000 1 #21 January 27, 2004 A former Ranger actually rucked from Benning to Washington DC in protest of the black beret. Nobody in the pentagon paid attention.______________________________________________ - Does this small canopy make my balls look big? - J. jdhill 0 #22 January 27, 2004 I'm glad I was out by the time it happened... It is embarrassing to see the guys/gals at the USAR/ANG armory wearing them... they look bad enough in the uniform, let alone wearing a beret like a frenchman... pathetic. AirCav 0 #23 January 27, 2004 Green, black, maroon or red it doesn't matter Adam. Wear it with pride. The rangers (LRPS) I flew in SE Asia were mostly ex SF's that had to give up their green and go to black. They were still elite and I was extremely proud to have flown them.GW685,D3888,C5052,SCS843

J I agree, I was fresh out of basic and AIT and wen tto my Reserve unit for the first tiem wearing my pressed uniform and spit shined boots with pride. When i arrived and saw half the unit wearing there berrets wrong adn unshined boots and torn uniforms I was disappointed. LAter that day I found out that was the administration part of the unit, when I was introduced to MP platoon I saw what I wanted to see. The MP's had a high standard for their soldiers. Glad I am going active duty now, but I think everyone should realize when they put on that uniform they are representing the US, so wear the uniform right and with pride. koz2000 1 #25 January 27, 2004 True it is who you are, not what you wear that is important, but I guess it's like taking your Cav hats and giving them to all army aviators, crewmen, and anyone who has ridden on a helo. It's signifies that you are a part of something special. I guess in the end we all wore a tape that says US Army.
