Reasons for an AH-1W Cobra to be flying at around 75 feet over my house?

Recommended Posts

Just got home from a night class at Palomar and right when i drive up infront of the garage the car starts to shake and i can hear that telltale sound of either a UH-1 or an AH-1.

Hopped out of my car to see the body of a Marine Corp AH-1W Cobra hauling ass right over my back yard at somewhere between 75-100 feet. Now i see CH-47's, UH-60's, CH-53's flying around but they are always well above 2000. Any ideas what this guy/girl was doing that fucking low over a civilian area?

Practice with NVG?:o For when they have to go and play in exciting challenging foriegn places where people don't like them.

You can call the base PAO and ask about it. Just call from a pay phone (wear glove's) and give them a general area rather than your address do not use you real name. Don't wait for them to call you back, just get a name and leave the phone booth immediatly & don't look up. ;)

Call back later for the answer from a different phone.:)

Reminds me of the good old days jumping in Hemet, California. I used to get angry at Bonanzas, Cessnas, Pipers, C-130s and Brazilias flying through our active DZ.
Then one day I was in freefall watching a pair of Huey Cobras flying through the DZ below me. I started to get angry, then remembered:
"Huey Cobras can fly anywhere they want to."

We get the same thing frequently at the family farm. It is on the flight path from Ft Hood to somewhere on the Texas coast.

I used to think the pilots used the house as a way marker before GPS came along.

If you can't get outside fast enough to see the first helo pass over, you can definitely catch the 2nd and third; and get waves from the pilots as the buzz by.

Blue skies,

Jim
