diskord 0 #1 January 27, 2004 For all those that had fun decoding Spirit's message, there is now a 2nd message up, that is different, on Opportunity. https://planetary.org/redrover-dvd/dvd_opportunity.html
diskord 0 #2 January 27, 2004 I also believe that the image currently up there is from Spirit and not opportunity yet, but here is a link 2 the opportunity Disc: http://origin.mars5.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/1/p/002/1P128365104EFF0100P2205L4M1.JPG and http://origin.mars5.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/1/p/002/1P128365137EFF0100P2205L1M1.JPG
quade 4 #3 January 27, 2004 WTF? It's the same image and the wording on the web page just doesn't make sense. I think they tried to update the web page with the current name, but just made it a confusing mess.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

diskord 0 #5 January 27, 2004 Quade, look at the links I posted above, they have a picture of the real disc (The disc actually looks different)
quade 4 #6 January 27, 2004 I think it looks different because the image was taken at a lower resolution and the compression is playing havok with stuff at the lower end of resolution. Macro-blocks of similar composition would look ok, but fine detail, especially patterns, could be quite deceiving. I wrote them a note asking about the DVD images and also if we'll ever get a chance to see a ranking of some sort. We'll see what they have to say -- shortly I hope.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

I am trying to debate whether I should even look at trying to hack on that first string of code, or if I should wait for updated pictures.
jerry81 10 #8 January 28, 2004 Right, from what I see, it seems that we have 3 words, 7,2 and 5 characters long, each letter represented with a 3x2 binary matrix (considering the dots are ones and empty spaces are zeroes) So the message looks like this; 10|11|11|10|10|10|10 01|10 10|10|10|10|11 01|00|10|10|01|11|01 11|01 10|01|00|11|01 00|11|10|10|10|10|00 10|10 10|00|00|10|10 First word begins and ends with the same letter, which also appears in the third word. Three letters appear twice. What does it say?

diskord 0 #14 January 28, 2004 Thanks. I know this is probably stupid, but to get a decimal value for a binary matrix, for example the first letter, would you just write it out 100100 and have a value of 36 or ? Sorry for the dumb math question.

Sorry for the dumb math question. I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer that (though my guess is that if we're talking code, there are more ways to represent a number in such a matrix). Anyway, you're thinking way too much. The solution of this puzzle will probably be a disappointment to you.
bmcd308 0 #16 January 28, 2004 Finally. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut in the forest sometimes. Sadly, I spent way too much time on it. Probably three to four hours. Linde 0 #21 January 28, 2004 oh well, ill keep looking for it then:-). Say, will i benefit from reading up some stuff on binary numbers (never understood in tech), or will it just make things complicated? Linde
quade 4 #22 January 28, 2004 Son of a bitch! Ok, I admit it. I was wrong about there being a second message on the second DVD, but when I looked at the image on the web page today, yep, it was a second code and a second message and trivial at that. Once I saw a good picture of it, I recognised it immediately and spent maybe 2 minutes on it! I'm really disappointed in his one. Hardly seems worth the time as an educational exercise. Linde To do the first one, you might or might not benifiet from reading up on binary numbers, you don't have to know but it helps. The 2nd one, i think I actually hurt myself by putting it in binary, just look at the rover picture and you will see it.

quade 4 #25 January 28, 2004 What I meant was that it hardly seems worth it as an educational exercise for the kids. I would have thought they'd get this in a different type of class. The first one made a LOT of sense as far as teacing the kids about binary, variable bit rate compression . . . lot's of stuff they should be exposed to in a computer science class. This one, I guess is for the younger kids that aren't quite ready for the more complicated stuff. Also, the first message was very efficient, packing more data into fewer bits. This one is much less efficient than it could be (althought I guess it is quite a bit easier for its real purposes).quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
