Slave Reparations

Recommended Posts

**I think African-American's owe me reparations, as his descendant, for the extreme suffering he incurred fighting to set them free.

Good luck on collecting that. The war between North and South was more economic that moral. After elementary school we were taugh American History consisted more of G. Washington chopping down the cherry tree and announcing 'I cannot tell a lie'.

There is an EXCELLENT book called 'Race and Economics' (Sowell, 1975, Longman, Inc.) that explains how whites as well as blacks suffer TO THIS DAY because of slavery. I won't go into it unless you ask, but there is a reason some people think having a house on wheels and furniture on the porch is a GOOD thing. We all still have some stigma because of slavery. Now some notes:

1) name calling (lazy, freaks, fill in the blank) is unnecessary and points towards a pre-conceived notion that blacks want something for nothing and/or are lazy freaks.

2) something for nothing: isn't that the very definition of slavery? And the beat goes on.

3) slavery was legal in America; transporting slaves over the Atlantic was not. Many people (called CARGO) were dumped over board when their ships were about to be discovered by the authorities.

4) there ARE some diseases that plague American Blacks that are a direct result of slavery: high blood pressure is prevalent (NOT EXCLUSIVE) to American Blacks because of the incredibly poor diet fed to slaves. Sickle-cell anemia is caused by a mutant gene that fought malaria in Africa, but has no use in the Americas...the list goes on...but then, with the AIDS epidemic in Africa..high blood pressure and sickle cell is looking pretty good right about now, especially since the chance of having health care is greater here.

5) making light of 'taking my grandpappys land' is moot. WE ALL GOT RIPPED OFF IN THE PAST. The Pilgrims weren't happy families in buckled shoes and funny hats, they were criminals who were thrown out of England and sent here to die in the wilderness. Instead, they found the Indigenous tribes, and by time THEY wised up...oh...well...

6) the justice system works for the trivial as well as what we think is earthshaking. Those people had the right to sue. Whether you like it or not, the RIGHT for everyone to be heard is what makes America worth fighting for. You don't have to like what they said, but they have the Right to say it and we'll call it a wrap.
My Personal Thoughts:

The thought of reparation is ridiculous cause I'd own everything. In some places and in some eyes, there are different values in America, BUT we are free to be who we want to be.If you don't want to hire me, I don't want to work for you anyway. I recently graduated from an Ivy League University and it cost ME over $25k a semester. And I am paying for it. (and I'm broke, so don't start hitting on me, either). We are who we want to be and cannot change the past.

The system should work for everyone, even people that bring dumb suits to court

Don't attribute this remark to me. I didn't make it.

thanks for the history lesson.

What's lazy is not reading MY remarks and then trying to attribute them to me. Show me where I called anyone a name. I have never said "Blacks" want something for nothing. I do think suits like this are brought by people who want something for nothing regardless of race. Big difference.

2) something for nothing: isn't that the very definition of slavery? And the beat goes on.

No. The definition of slavery is much much more than "something for nothing". How shallow and simplistic an explaination.

3) slavery was legal in America; transporting slaves over the Atlantic was not. Many people (called CARGO) were dumped over board when their ships were about to be discovered by the authorities.

True, but it was probably not as many as often is claimed. I've heard it as high as 100 million by those who support suits like this. Even heard that sharks still swim the slave trade routes today looking for more bodies.

If you say so.

Too bad if you don't like me making light of "taking my grandpappys land". It's what happened and I'll explain it and make light of what happened to my family any way I want to. You know, free speech and all that.

Yes they do have the right to sue and say whatever they like, just as I have the right to criticize their suit and offer my opinions on it whether you like it or not. Having the right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Now I'll call it a wrap.

I have no idea why you are saying this. I probably wouldn't have any need for your services anyway, but it wouldn't have anything to do with your race.

Very deep, can I quote you?

Based on the number of dumb suits like this one, it shows the system is working the way you'd like it to. Too bad we haven't gotten legislation passed as yet to make people who bring stupid suits like this, responsible for clogging up the courts YET!!

You are right, I made an error when quoting and picked up your quote of a quote and for that I apologize.

The rest of the comments were not made directly to YOU, they were generally speaking of the thread. I thought 'And now some notes' would explain that. Sorry you took them personally.

I did not mean YOU were going to hit on me, that was a joke and a general remark. As far as me 'dying to tell somebody' how much I paid for my education, that was just to make a point that people get what THEY put in.

Again, I'm sorry for picking up your quote of a quote. I'll be more careful when responding.

Glad you like it...

That photo was taken in North Carolina. A friend did a deck for a woman that was SO incredible..her entire house should have been in Homes and Gardens. While he did some last mintue whatever carpenters do, I wandered further around back and found this little place for solitude in the midst of all that glamour.

I want reparations for left handed people. You ever seen a left handed mill/lathe/drill press? How about a left handed microwave? What about a left handed piano? Left handed soda machine? Left handed condoms? Left handed toilet paper?

Have you ever tried to flush a public toilet while holding your penis with your left hand? You can't do it without pissing all over your damn self! All the flushers are on the left! I have been held captive all my life by right handed people. You ain't seen oppresion until you try to drink and drive a golf cart and you have to put your beer in a holder on the right. There goes a bump and now you spilled your damn beer everywhere and the jolt awoke your bladder so you go pee and try to flush as you are finishing to speed things up and end up pissing on yourself and now you smell like beer and piss (unless you are drinking Corona - then you just smell like piss).

DAMN THE RIGHT HANDED MAN!

Hmm . . . this is a new one. So we are the decendants of a penal colony? No one came over here for the natural resources or to extend trade?Wonder why so much lumber was shipped back to England and then all that tobacco that early settlers started farming. (Thus the reason for the rise in slavery) No one came here to be free from the Church of England? No one came here for the free land that the Monarchy was giving away to those willing to relocate? I am sure all my history professors here would love to know they are teaching the wrong stuff. Guess I will have to change my major to Engineering, I am getting the wrong info here and now my degree is worthless. Oh wait, I already changed to Engineering. Good thing.:S

Of course that explains why I feel this incescant need to break the law!

Base jump anyone?:P

do they make left handed rigs??

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! Now I really must protest! I was leaving that one alone because I know that rig companies can't afford a huge lawsuit over such an obvious disjutice! Well, now I must organize all left handed (not-left wing:P) Skydivers and we must file a class action suit against the entire rigging industry. Down with rig makers!

DAMN THE RIGHT HANDED RIG MAKING MAN!

Dude, I just mentioned the Pilgrims. Of course I am not saying that everyone is descended from a Penal Colony. When I said that we were all ripped off in the past, that covers people who came here to escape STRIFE...or came and GOT it.

You switched to Engineering, can you please remember the Left-handed people out there who need quality products! There seems to be a market. Blue skies and bandaids...

she's right...

the pilgrims got tossed out of England for their religious beliefs. They made a brief stopover in Holland, and then continued over here.

as an aside, the state of Georgia was originally a penal colony, I believe.

Religious beliefs and criminals are 2 entirely different things. The quote was that they were criminals. She did not say they were thrown out for religious beliefs,I did.:P

During that time period, having a religion other than the Church of England WAS a crime.

~~~~~~~QUOTE~~~~~~~~
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Puritan-leaning religious opinions were generally tolerated, but when King James came to power in 1604 the Church of England again began to root out, prosecute, and jail those who openly believed the Church needed to be purified of its false ceremonies, non-Scriptural teachings, and superstitious rituals. Across England, small groups began to separate themselves from their persecuting Churches, to form their own secret congregations. One such group was centered not too far from Sherwood Forest, in a small village in Nottinghamshire named Scrooby. Led by Richard Clyfton, John Robinson, and William Brewster, by 1606 the group was secretly holding meetings in Scrooby Manor, where Brewster was employed as the postmaster. It was not long, however, before the authorities were onto them. The group made the decision to flee England to Holland, where they had heard they could practice their religion without the threat of jail, punishments, and fines. After several failed attempts in 1607, they all managed to make it to Amsterdam in 1608, and later migrated en masse to Leiden, Holland in early 1609.
~~~~~~~~~~~QUOTE~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Pilgrims were a small group of people who made a great impact on world history. Their story begins in England, sometime after King Henry VIII started the independent Church of England, also known as the Anglican or Episcopal Church. Most of the countries surrounding England did not agree with the King’s decision. Many people in England did not agree either. Some wanted the Anglican Church to be more like the old Catholic church. Others wanted it to be even more plain and to rely more on Bible teachings rather than ceremony.

In most European countries in those days it was against the law to worship differently than the official church of that country. There was no such thing as freedom of religion, or even democracy for that matter. Governments were usually ruled by a monarch (a king or queen), who had the power to decide how everyone should think, act or believe. People who didn’t were often put in prison, and sometimes even killed.

I'm glad you posted that. I think it gives some background as to why many generations later, when the Constitution and Bill of Rights was drafted it stated in the Bill of Rights that Congress would make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;

Of course we all know Article 1 has been hijacked and twisted to mean there must be no religion in Government.
