And yes those are her skydiving “doggles”. Cara is a five-year-old Beauceron. And what does she do for a living? Skydiving of course, but there is more. Cara is a Para-rescue Canine Search Specialist for FEMA’s (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Urban Search & Rescue Task Force and Florida Special Response Team-A. She is a nationally certified Search & Rescue Dog that searches for trapped live victims in disasters and missing people. She spent 11 days at the WTC and completed 22 search missions. She is one of only nine recipients of the AKC’s (American Kennel Club) heroic service medal. She has 56 jumps including six night jumps and six water jumps. She is also a registered therapy dog that goes to local nursing homes and children’s hospital. She herds sheep on the ranch (don’t get excited Clay) and does agility and obedience. Last year she broke the world record for the highest skydiving dog and will be breaking her own record this spring. A TV reporter asked me after returning from 9/11/01 if she was my hero now; I told them she has always been my hero. Cara is shown below with her heroic service medal.
