Get your wisdom teeth out! (Don't be dumb like me!)

It doesn't have to be done at all. Some people have perfectly good wisdom teeth. I'm 58, and I have 4 good wisdom teeth, chew with them every day. They've not given me one day of trouble in my life.

Mine really do have to be done… :S

One badly impacted, two a little impacted and worst of all, one growing into my inner ear which I am 99% certain is the reason why I have been plagued with all kinds of ear problems (with pressure changes) over the past few years! [:/][:/] It’s been keeping me from jumping as much as I’d like and it therefore has to go!!! :S Still dreading it though... :S

it depends on how bad yours are. The luckiest people have room for them and they aren't impacted, so they don't get them removed. The next luckiest are the people who just don't have room for them... if they aren't impacted, then the removal isn't usually that bad. A woman i know had 4 removed and wasn't even put under. they just used novacaine and gave her tylenol. she was talking normally the next day

Now the poor suckers are the ones with impacted ones. This usually means the dentist has to make bigger holes, or root around in your gums. In my case, the impacted one fragmented when he was getting it out, and he really made a big hole finding all the peices. But I was kinda lucky, and only had 3, and didn't get dry sockets... so I was eating normal food and talking almost normally the next day.
you just gotta chew with your front teeth like a rat for a while. ;)

It is also not cool that I do not remember 5 hours of my life while I was under the effects of the I.V. meds. My mom drove me home from dentist and said I drove the car from the passengers seat all the way home while screaming at all the other drivers fro not letting me over even tho I had my blinker on!

yeah man, I know exactly what you're talking about. I got mine done in high school and my mom said i was singing and scaring the little kids in the waiting room on my way out. god i hope she didn't pump me for information while i was tripping.

It may hurt to have them out, and it may not. I was NOT looking forward to having my wisdom teeth out at the age of 24, but I had to do it. The dentists that would put me to sleep to do it were all booked for months, so my only choice was a dentist solely used novacaine. Anyway, he froze my jaw and face until I couldn't feel a thing; the noise it made was not pretty ( I think they cracked while coming out) but it did not hurt a bit. Anyway, he told me to take 800mg ibuprofen every 4 hours for pain, and if it hurt too much he would come back in and give me more novacaine. (My body cannot handle prescript. pain killers.) I took ibuprofen about an hour after I left, went back to work, got caught up in that and forgot to take more ibuprofen. But I didn't need it. In fact, after that, I had absolutely no pain what so ever. It was pretty cool.

But my cousin on the other hand, her tongue swelled so big she couldn't swallow. (Her wisdom teeth were so impacted they were sideways in her mouth!) Ouch. Anyway, it depends on the severity, and once the infection is gone you will be good to go. I kept mine..was going to make refridgerator magnets out of them but never got around to it. They floated in my beer cap glass for a while. A real party treat. :D

I really don't think it will be as bad as you are expecting. Just watch out for dry sockets. :)

Ouch Val! I hope you feel much better soon.

I am having to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth out in April/May:| and although I am dreading it, your story shows that it has to be done. :S

Just because some people get appendicitis, does that show that we should all have our appendices removed?

John, leave it to you to mess with the thread. If you teeth are good, lucky you, fine. But, there are some of us that have to have them removed.

BTW, my appendices is fine, so for now, I plan on keeping it ;)

"What is a dry socket?

A "dry socket" occurs when the blood clot is lost from an extraction site prematurely. Basically, the blood clot in the socket serves the same two functions as a "scab" on a skin surface cut. First, it assists in the cessation of bleeding and second, it protects underlying structures during the healing process. Like the child who "picks at a scab" the area heals in time but is painful for far longer than if the "scab" had been left alone.

When the blood clot is lost before the underlying structres have had time to heal, bone is exposed to the oral environment along with fine nerve endings. This is an exquisitely painful but otherwise relatively harmless situation. There are packing materials which the oral surgeon can place to help ease the discomfort both by physically blocking the wound and by the action of the chemicals in the pack on local nerve endings. Generally, patients return to have the pack changed every day or two and most patients do not require more than 2 or three dressing changes. Some patients require no dressing while others may require 4 or 5 changes of packing. Tincture of time and good oral hygiene usually resolve the situation.

There are some activities which may increase the propensity for dry socket formation...smoking, drinking carbonated beverages in the first 24 hours after surgery, spitting or drinking through a straw in that same time period...but often "dry sockets" occur for no particular reason at all. "

I'm going to sell mine on the black market for big money! :D

Hey, selling those on the black market does bring in some cash. Going to have to think about that one;)

I developed a dry socket...talk about serious fuckin pain...

I agree with that>:(:S[:/]
I believe I got it from changing gauze too frequently after the extraction....blot clot didn't form.

The size of the human jaw is getting smaller and smaller- more than 80% of people have no room for wisdom teeth in their mouth- plus more need also to have back molars also removed so the rest of their teeth have proper spacing in their mouth.

Re: if your dentist recommends to have wisdom teeth removed- --------------get them removed as soon as you can.
My son had his removed when he was 14- plus back molars when he was 16- he is 20 now and teeth are starting to spread out slowly...and will have the space they need...pic attached of his smile..

SMiles;)

I have an extremely small jaw. It's the size of a child's. Because of that i've had 6 teeth plus my wisdom teeth removed. And i think you can tell from my avatar i still love to smile. :)

Unfortunately, the infection is spreading everywhere else. I have a swollen lymph-node, my bottom lip has blisters and is completely swollen, my tongue is getting blisters and is swollen, my ear is starting to hurt, and my gums in other areas of my mouth are becoming swollen. This really sucks.

SEX-Y!

I guess everyone can't have as big a mouth as I do. All my wisdom teeth have come in where they are supposed to. :)
Hope you get feeling better. :P

So John, you must be either really old or have a big jaw;) Or both:o
