There is supposed to be a 20 foot glass tower that he made. They had an exibit very similar to that here in Columbus 2 years ago. The craftsmanship and gracefullness of the glass is just increadible. They had one of the pieces hanging in a skylight here and I spent probally 20 minutes just walking around it looking at how it changed its flow in the light and how the colors played off each other. It was a field trip for the students. We watched him work a piece and he invited us to ask questions. Showed us around the workshop. We were in complete awe. Chihuly is to hot glass what Tolkien is to the Fantasy genre. Hot glass was practically a lost art in the 50's. It was through his work and the work of a few others that the art form got back on the radar as an art, rather than a craft. One of his bowls resides on the set of Frazier. And if you make a road trip sometime, bring the kids to DC and we'll all go to the museums. Some of the best in the world, and all totally free. What kids don't like the Air & Space Museum and Natural History? You can see planes, rockets, bugs, and a flawless crystal ball bigger than your head. You'd even have a place to stay. Incredible Stuff. My x is a stain glass artist (a damn good one actually) and I went with her. Even if your not into it, it is so worth going, you will enjoy yourself immensely. I don't know if there was supposed to be a certain theme, but to us most of the pieces looked like things from the sea. The colors are fabulous too. Our favorite part of the exhibit was a hallway with a glass ceiling, and on top of it were hundreds of colorful pieces to walk under. My son wasn't too impressed with his modern paintings ("mom, anyone can splatter paint on a canvas!"), but overall they both liked the exhibit. For anyone near Orlando or St. Pete (where there is another exhibit), it's definitely worth stopping by and seeing.
