jimmytavino 16 #26 January 16, 2004 Play Hard...Do Both,,, and do them both WELL.. and you'll be content at work ..... and Free!!!! at the dropzone... A weekend spent skydiving...... is 5 times more satisfying when It follows a week of productive accomplishment @ the jobsite/office... ......By the same token,,, the fullfillment which can only come from 6 or 8 awesome skydives,,( or 10 or 12 ),, provides us with the perfect sense of satisfaction which we need,, to take us into the challenges of the following work week.... .... Oh yes... if it's possible,, and if the dz is near enough to your home... get out for a mid week jump or two,, as well.....

LoudDan 0 #30 January 16, 2004 Dude, I am a safety manager for an airline, and both of my bosses frown on the fact that I skydive. Of course, they are both pilots, and apparently believe it is OK to do aerobatics (during which FAR requires you to ear a parachute) even theough my one boss spent 10 months in the hospital after a crash. They got kinda pissed when I took the flight safety manager for a tandem. Fuck 'em Coming soon to a bowl of Wheaties near you!!

I jam at work, but it's been more of an effort for the past few weeks. I'd much rather have real jumps on the weekends than DZ.com all week long... Not that DZ.com doesn't occasionally provide a much-needed fix.
chaoskitty 0 #33 January 16, 2004 What you do with your weekends and vacation time is not for your boss to dictate. Focus on work during working hours. Give them nothing to bitch about. Jump your ass off. Edited to add: Accept that they are never going to quite understand...

slug 1 #35 January 16, 2004 lets look at the advantages and disadvantges of letting your boss/coworkers know what you do on your own time. some people will think your "cool" because your a skydiver and it's somethng they aslways wanted to do. Some people will think your useing poor judgement, and have a high probability of getting hurt. Or because your having so much fun on the weekends your work is less than 110% during the week. If your in the middle of a big project or have a key position in the company (making the boss look good) and you have a accident then the boss is going to have to hustle & project/schedule will suffer. I found that the less people at know about your private life the better off you are. Boss asks What you doing this weekend? Bible study, Work out, Choir practice, volunteer work, take care of sick parents etc. Boss thinks your a real responsiable person. R.I.P.
Unstable 9 #36 January 16, 2004 If I want to miss a day to go jump, the work starts long before the intended jumping day. It's a long & complicated process of short and long lies tied in with personal truths - My boss is a smart person, I know this & I know how to sneak around and get a wednesday off for jumping.....=========Shaun ==========
2fat2fly 0 #37 January 16, 2004 My manager doesn't like my spending weekends at the DZ when I could be working on projects, or taking a bunch of 1/2 vacation days to go jump.....but his manager is the one that started me skydiving----So There!I am not the man. Skyrose7 0 #38 January 16, 2004 I got lucky. I decided to put that I was a skydive instructor on my resume and it actually swayed them to give me the job. Luckily, they didn't look at it as a self-destructive attitude, they looked at it as I was quick responding in emergency situations, attentive to detail, and an empowered woman. They are still freaked about the whole thing. It was pretty funny, at the end of my first interview, my now supervisor says...." on a side note, I have always wanted to go skydiving!! my husband thinks it's crazy...etc. " She asked me a ton of questions and was totally intrigued. I was in. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The mind is like a parachute--it works better when it is open. JUMP. MaryRose

skyyhi 0 #40 January 16, 2004 I told my boss and the rest of the office when I made my first AFF jump back in November. Everyone was very supportive. . .and they couldn't wait to see my video and look at the pictures. . .now every Friday and every Monday they ask me whether I am jumping and want details about the jumps I do make. . .they are a wonderful group of people. . . That being said, I will say that during December my work did suffer quite a bit. I was so distracted by wanting to get "out there" and finish AFF. . .I was PW'ing all day at work and was basically very unproductive. I am proud to say that I have turned that around, gotten off my butt and put my productivity number back up where they belong. . .I still have time to PW during lunch and when I take breaks, but my work no longer suffers.________________________________________ Take risks not to escape life… but to prevent life from escaping. ~ A bumper sticker at the DZ FGF #6 Darcy
LoudDan 0 #41 January 16, 2004 One cool thing is that most of the DZ's around my area offer discounts on Wednesdays, and when I inquired about sick days with the HR folks, I found that 80% of our sick days in the company happen on Monday and Friday. Wednesday events don't happen often enough for them to take notice only about 5%. So calling in sick on a Wednesday is no biggie, but the lead up for the sick day is on the dramatic side. Darius11 12 #42 January 16, 2004 Every one at work knows i jump. We have a small company and we are all friends so every one knows what's up in the other persons life. Thats good and bad. When the bad part happens you have to remind your self that this person is more then just your boss and when the good thing happens you have to do the same. It is very hard. I don't get to have any time off from work. I am lucky if i get two weeks a year. flyangel2 2 #45 January 16, 2004 QuoteI found that the less people at know about your private life the better off you are. I'm with you on that. Most people that I work with/for have no idea what I do on my off time, and I prefer to keep it that way. Okay, let's all be adults about this, and I know that's hard being skydivers. I have to ask, as an adult why would you let your work suffer because of an activity? Finding a balance is the key. I know we all need breaks from the stress and pressures that work puts on us, and making a skydive helps some people. I enjoy skydiving, but I don't let it control my every waking moment.
