That made my heart skip a few beats just watching. specialy when the reserve (which looks like a 12 foot round??) gets wraped up

Wow. It looked like he was going to have a successful canopy transfer for a second there. Do paraglider mains have a three ring release? If so, I wonder why he did not cut away the main when the two canopies were clear of each other.

Another question for those who have been around for a while - I thought that part of the point of a round reserve was that it would not downplane with a malfunctioning square main. That one sure did.

... I don't think so..( re: the releases ) ... but if he's gonna carry a "reserve'... shouldn't he also carry a hook knife???.... that can't be the first time such a scenario played itself out,,, ( we must learn,, from the experiences of others)

Well it sure DID look like the "main" spun into the round,,, which looked to be a very very small... canopy... But this is a "super elliptical" glider,, not a sport canopy...and the round sure could have been bigger.....The serious mismatch between the two,, may have contributed to the collapse.. still good evidence,, that Nothing !!!! is ever 100 percent....correct...
As for "not transitioning into a downplane" with a round reserve,,,, that's only because you need 2 Squares,,, to make a downplane.. But I bet a sport main can twist into an entanglement with a round reserve ( choke it off) REAL easily... hence the release of the main..may be in order...in such a case.
Nice piece of video work though......
thanks joeyramone .................... jmy
....p s . man he sure got that secondary out quickly !!!.... maybe too quickly,:o:S,, seems like there may have been a chance for the glider to recover... instead the pilot increased the amount of time allowed for an entanglement to occur...by having both out,,, for such a "long " time

Nope. And the round he put out was probably no bigger than a 24' maybe even a 20'. Way to small to land you by it's self.

negative batman...

time to use the BIG hook knife you always wear then.. just dont get confused as your spinning downB|

anything that indicate that this guy were lucky, the video sure dont show that[:/]And i do belive a landing like that could smack you unconciunes(sorry if i say that in a wrong way:ph34r::D:S)and then he could drown:|B|

There are courses that teach advanced paraglider maneuvers that involve intentional partial collapses. Most, if not all, are done over water. My best guess is that this guy was trying to learn something new, frieked, got the round out (there is no cut-away for the couple of people who missed that post), and by that point ran out of options. Why didn't he give the glider a chance to reinflate before the reserve was thrown? The one thing the video doesn't show is descent rate. He may have been under a thousand feet when he initated the collpse, who knows. He might have thought he was going to fall backwards into his glider and get wrapped up in it, so pitched before finding out. Whatever it all boiled down to....that video was cool!

***EDIT***
I don't think he frieked. As soon as the round is inflated, you can see him intentionally trying to collapse the main by grabbing onto one side and pulling. This ended up putting it into a spin, and increasing the force nessesary to pull it down. Did he try to collapse it wrong? It's hard to tell from the video and my limited paraglider experience. Anyone with any knowledge on the subject?

couldnt he simply colaps it by cutting 1 steeringline, and then pul the other all the way in?Kind of if you want to catch a tandem i guess???

i have NO glider experience, but dont think that the reserve did anything good in this case..[:/]

Dangerous freeking sport. Was looking into hang glider acrobatics(paragliding's sister sport), but if your wing snaps you get to use one of those rounds to slow down your impact. Imagine trying to PLF when you're in a harness and surrounded by twisting sail, wire and pipe under a round that'll leave with with broken leg on a good day.
